Capítulo 43: All Pain And No Gain

Loki was getting crushed under the weight of Mjolnir, but he was enjoying watching his helpless brother stand there looking dumbfounded, unable to understand the harsh fact that the mighty God of Thunder cannot save the day this time!

Loki pondered on how he was on the verge of achieving everything he wanted. When Jotunheim will be ripped to shreds, Loki would've accomplished the shortest victory without a war in the history of Asgard. He would finally prove his father that brute, raw power, as Thor had ungraciously displayed on his coronation, is always exceedingly outsmarted by the intellectual and cunning one. And then, he would be the rightful King of Asgard! He had already proven his mother that he was capable of protecting her and his father single-handedly, without even thinking of needing Thor's assistance. He was just waiting to see the happy look in Nevaeh's eyes, when she will hear everything about his glorious plan about which he shall tell her only when he has gained absolute victory!

Loki made an audible sound of laughter mixed with a grunt as he lifted his head again, to watch Thor who was wincing a little under the pressure of the swirling bi-frost. Loki couldn't believe his brother's stubbornness; for once, Thor could let things happen according to Loki, especially when he had put such great effort into it, but instead, he is standing in front of the bi-frost while scratching his witless head, wondering how to stop his genius brother's almighty plan.

'Look at you, the Mighty Thor, with all your strength, and what good does it do to you now, huh?' Loki yelled, grunting in pain under the enormous pressure on his chest. 'Do you hear me, brother? There's nothing you can do!' bellowed Loki, still pinned to the ground.

Suddenly, he felt the huge burden lifted off his chest.

Mjolnir flew ahead and Thor caught it in mid-air, frowning heavily at the bi-frost while thinking a way to halt his brother's inhumane plan.

Loki sighed a breath of relief as soon as the weight was lifted off of him, not because he could move again, but because he shall gain victory any moment now.

On Earth, after returning from Raphael's house, Nevaeh was in no mood to sleep. She had witnessed so much drama in the entire day that she didn't even think sleeping was a feat that could be achieved. She was standing inside her home's library; staring at something from so long ago that she stood rooted in the spot for several seconds. A rectangular glass case embossed with golden sides stood in the corner, just as it had for years. A black, leathery cloth was draped inside it upon a holder. It was fluttering in the slightest inside the sealed glass container.

Nevaeh waved her wand. The black cloak unravelled itself, slithering down from the holder, its ends getting wrapped in a bundle at the bottom of the glass. The cloak glided ahead, passing right through its glass case and soared towards Nevaeh. She picked it up with trembling hands, nostalgia filling her mind as well as her eyes. Nevaeh clutched it tightly by both her hands and closed her eyes for a moment, right before walking out of the library and marching straight onto her terrace.

After today's chaos, she craved nothing more than a little quiet. She wrapped the cloth around her head like a hood, covering most of her forehead. She sat down on the cold terrace floor, folding her legs tightly in order to meditate.

Nevaeh pulled out her wand and held it in the air, soon letting go of it. It stood still in mid-air on her chest level without needing any support. Nevaeh sighed heavily and closed her eyes. Her entire face was swallowed into darkness, her face no longer visible. The tip of her floating wand lit a glowing white.

Meanwhile, Loki couldn't be any happier. He knew there was nothing Thor could do to snatch away his happiness this time. His belief was instantly contradicted.

Loki's eyes widened bulgingly when he saw Thor lift his hammer into the air before bringing it down swinging on the rainbow bridge, making it crack a little. He hit it again, and again, and again as Loki straightened himself with a horrified expression on his face, his eyes emerging in tears of anger.

If the rainbow bridge is damaged, the entire bi-frost would tumble right into the abyss of space, and Loki's grand plan along with it. Loki couldn't understand his brother's mind; he had presumably fallen in love with that ordinary mortal and yet he was prepared to destroy the bi-frost – his only way to see her – just to put a stop to Loki's wishes. Thor's sudden, bold gesture was wrecking him from the inside as he realized that his brother was willing to let go of the women he loved for the sole purpose of destroying Loki's plan.

Thor kept hitting the rainbow bridge with all his strength. It was beginning to crack under his mighty blows.

'What are you doing?' Loki hissed through wide, bulging eyes, wondering if he even remembers his mortal woman. 'If you destroy the bridge, you'll never see her again!' bellowed Loki at the top of his lungs, but Thor's mind was made up. Loki shuddered as he saw Thor beating the rainbow bridge with his utmost power. He fumingly got up to his feet. His was the best plan, ensuring Asgard's victory within the blink of an eye and without bloodshed, but his moronic brother was adamant on crushing Loki's dream.

Loki winced a little when Thor did not even halt for a second after hearing his brother's words. Instead, he kept beating the bridge with his hammer like a child who was angry that things weren't going his way.

Loki began running fumingly at Thor, who mumbled something which sounded like, 'Forgive me Jane,' and Loki was furious. His brother did not care about Loki's comment of him not really being his brother and about his genius plan for Asgard's victory, but he cared to mumble those redundant words which cannot possibly be heard by that mortal. Even in his moment of sheer rage, Loki couldn't help but be amazed at his lunatic logic.

Loki ran, yelling fumingly and as soon as his brother uttered those words, Loki charged on him, soaring in the air with Gungnir held ahead to attack him, but Thor gave one final herculean blow on the bridge, making it crack and shatter into a thousand pieces.

A booming explosion, quickly followed by shattering of the rainbow bridge threw the brothers soaring high up into the air. The huge explosion shook the entire bi-frost's structure, making it crash and collapse heavily. It completely broke apart, getting engulfed in spark-like-flames. The magnitude of the blast sent the ocean beneath the bridge rumbling into towering waves as water splashed about, crashing into the cold night.

Loki and Thor were screaming at the top of their lungs as they went propelling down from the sky and into the cold vacuum of space. There was no longer a whole bridge beneath them and certainly no bi-frost. Nothing was left. The sight was terrifying. Loki had Gungnir in his hand and he glanced up to watch Thor a little above his head, falling towards his death along with him.

Loki was screaming loudly; he was about to pass the rainbow bridge and fall into the deadly space when Thor quickly stretched his arm and grasped the handle of Gungnir, making Loki halt in mid-air. Loki blinked up in confusion. His eyes widened when he saw Odin on the partially broken rainbow bridge, grasping Thor by his leg, who was clutching on to Gungnir as though it were his dear life.

Loki blinked at his brother and his father, who now knew all about what he had planned for Asgard. Loki looked at them, and there they were, the mighty-males of the royal family of Asgard; the All-Father Odin, clutching his first-born son, Thor by his ankle, who was dangling upside down from a rainbow bridge, which he recently broke because he was having a slight disagreement with his brother, who is now dangling beneath him while grasping onto a golden stick.

Loki was tired and exhausted. He looked into his father's eyes through his own, slightly tearful ones. He wondered what his father might think of Loki's doings, but his time of wakefulness had already hinted him a reflection of what his father thought of everything. But Loki had to hear it from his father's mouth and he choked a little while holding back tears.

'I could've done it, father! I could've done it!' Loki said through desperate eyes, waiting for any hints of approval from his father, but none came. 'For you! – For all of us!' yelled Loki without averting his stare from Odin's eyes, not even for a mere moment, afraid that he might miss the slightest hint of appreciation from him if he even blinked.

'No, Loki' Odin said quietly.

Loki's eyes widened.

He couldn't believe it. Even after all these years, his father still wasn't able to think of him righteous. But Thor has returned now, he thought, as he looked at them through narrow, disappointed eyes. His father has his worthy son with him, his own blood. His righteous heir.

Loki's heart had stopped by his father's firm expression. He slowly loosened his grip from Gungnir, his hand sliding down from the slender family-staff, and he allowed gravity to take care of the rest.

'No' hushed Odin, through hurting eyes.

'NOOOOOO!' yelled an upside-down Thor, grunting in pain as he watched his beloved brother fall in the cold abyss, his arms out-stretched as he gave up on his life. The pain burning inside Thor's chest was much too piercing to bear. Thor's eyes burst into tears as he watched Loki disappear into the void, getting engulfed by the coldness of the abyss, vanishing in a blink amongst the twinkling of the heavenly stars...
