Capítulo 13: Partial Success

"Father, in my memories, how many girls did you see swimming with me?" Dean asked with anticipation.

"Two, of course. Daphne and Astoria were really cute when they were... wait, was there someone else?" Joseph immediately realized why his son was asking this question.

Dean clenched his fist and made a victory pose while shouting, "Yes, I did it!"

Dean successfully managed to conceal his memories of Luna and her family. He knew he couldn't stop him before getting access to his memories, instead, he created a stream of memories where he edited the part out where he met them or his other interactions with them. It seems to succeed.

"I didn't expect that. It was a clever idea to let me access your memories and think that it was all. You can indeed use it to deceive your enemies. But, it worked just because I wasn't really determinant in my attack and didn't search further. You shouldn't let it get to your head and slow you down. It was just a partial success." Joseph warned him, so he wouldn't think he was good and slow down his practice.

"Also, you might have already realized, the second stage doesn't really have a finishing line. You can keep practicing it to gain more efficiency and get better at it. You can narrow down the information you push towards the attacker. When you really get good at it, you can even just let the attacker only access to a single word or a single moment in your memory. At the peak, you should be able to achieve the same result as when you were meditating, deny every contact with outsiders. So just keep practicing." Even though Joseph didn't really achieve the peak in occlumency, from the information passed down the family, it was possible.

"Yes, father. I will keep practicing as you said. I know how important this is, so you don't have to worry about it. So, if there is no finishing line, when will I get to the third stage?" Dean wondered if he could master it all before he could go to Hogwarts. He still remembered that old bastard, who caused his death.

Albus Dumbledore, this name was known to the wizards as one of the most powerful wizards alive. In his past life, he didn't know who he is, since Dumbledore wouldn't introduce himself to a sacrificial lamb, so he just called him an old bastard.

When he first saw his picture, Dean was stunned and got a bit afraid. Even though he was killed by a young boy, the main culprit was that old bastard. He was even more surprised to learn that he was described as the leader of the light against the dark forces. He knew that it was bullshit considering how the old bastard used his deaths as a training. Well, maybe he was better to fellow humans, he didn't really know.

Actually, it wasn't just him, most of the wizards disregarded non-human sentient living beings and even used them as part of their experiments and potions. He wondered why they considered experimenting is a fine practice, but it becomes dark arts when it is done to a human. That was weird indeed.

He needed to successfully master occlumency, because he was sure that Dumbledore will not be lenient on him as his father. He couldn't imagine what will happen to him if his secret past is exposed to him.

"The third stage can wait for now, until you start actually casting spells. Because for it to succeed, you need some sort of control over magic. Just keep studying the subjects I gave, from the way I see, you are not far from accomplishing your goal." Joseph encouraged him, he was really proud of Dean's progress so far. He even thought that it wasn't really necessary to deny him from learning magic. He was progressively getting more mature and reliable. But since it was something already decided, he stuck with it, since it gave Dean a goal to accomplish.

Dean continued his studies for herbology, astronomy, and history of magic. He was almost done with the first three years for these subjects. It took him three years to progress this far, considering he didn't study all day long and got to enjoy his childhood, it was wonderful. At most in one and a half year, he wanted to finish the first five years and finally start spellcasting.

He didn't really mind slowly studying and enjoying his life. If he kept spending his time only studying, he was sure that he will regret not spending these years with his family.
