Capítulo 19: The Truth
The next week, Lucas was getting ready to leave for work when he saw the news article. The expóse was about Maya and her adoptive status. It didn't include who her birth parents were but that she was an adopted child of the Manick family. It was printed in the local tabloids. How the news reached Germany baffled him but he needed to act fast so that she would never find out this way.
" Bury the story and remove all traces of it from the internet. Do it all in the next 30 minutes," ordered Lucas over the phone as he was walking out of his closet. Maya was in shower, luckily she had not checked her phone yet, he thought to himself.
" It's out. What should I do? Should I bring her home?" asked Lucas on the phone tentatively. He didn't know how the other person wanted to handle the situation. " Bring her home please. We will tell her the whole story."
Lucas then passed his and Maya's information to his assistant and got them on the next flight back home. She needed to be around her family when the story undoubtedly surfaces again. Maya came out all dressed in her work outfit and was drying her hair. Lucas walked to her with a grim expression on her face.
" What is wrong? Why do you look upset?" asked Maya as she looked at him through the mirror. " We need to go back home now. Your parents need you home now," he answered cryptically. Maya did not want to pursue further and she just nodded. She knew something was up and she was patient to hear it from her parents since they seemed to be involved.
Maya then left to her apartment to pack her bags and collect her passport. Within an hour they were already in the flight heading back home. Since it was a private flight there were no unnecessary stopovers. Maya buckled her seatbelt and looked up at the handsome face which was marred by tension and asked tentatively, " Has something happened to my family?" That was the worse case scenario in her mind.
" They are all fine, there is just a small issue which they need you back for. They will explain it to you when we reach your home," he explained, hoping to prevent her from overthinking things and getting worried. Due to the speed they packed and got on the flight, Maya was unable to check her phone or even switch it on. Lucas observed the scene and released a sigh in relief.He didn't want her to find anything out before meeting her parents.
The rest of the flight was eerily quiet as Lucas looked at some paperwork and Maya just completed her book since she had no work to do at the moment. They reached Country M soon enough and were on their way to her home.
As she reached, she realised the whole family was back and in attendance. She wondered what the issue was, but nevertheless walked into her home. As she entered she saw her mother sitting on the sofa with Samantha at her side, rubbing her back and consoling her. "Mama! What's wrong?" asked Maya as she went to stand in front of her mother.
Irene was shocked to see her daughter right in front of her. She hastily rubbed the tears of her face and stood up. " You're back. How was your flight? Are you hungry? Do you want me to cook anything for you?" asked Irene as she tried to act normally in front of her child.
Manick walked up to Lucas and spoke, " Thank you for bringing her back so fast. You may leave now. We need to have a family talk." " I am not leaving her alone as she finds out. She needs me," rebutted Lucas vehemently. " You do know who released this news right? I think it's time you had a talk with your dad as well. Who Maya needs at this moment are already present in this room," responded Manick with an exasparated look. He had aged tremendously over this week.
Lucas then nodded his head unhappily as he strode to the entrance. Maya followed him out and at the entrance he turned to her and said, " I am here for you no matter what. Believe that I will never leave you." Lucas declared as he hugged her tightly unwilling to let go. Maya knew something was wrong but she believed Lucas. She believed his love for her. She just smiled and nodded her head.
As Maya walked in, Manick came up to her and said, " Maya, we need to tell you something. Please sit down dear." Maya followed her father and sat down. She looked around the room. Her mother and sister in law on the sofa with red rimmed eyes. Her brothers in either corners of the room refusing to maintain eye contact with her. Her dad sat opposite her, he looked haggard, as if he had not slept for a week. His hair was greyer than before.
" What's the matter Papa?" asked Maya. " Maya we need to tell you the truth about your birth parents. You were the child of my brother, Matthew and his wife Fiona. Both of them died in a car accident when you were 6 months old. Ever since then your mother Irene and I had adopted you and raised you as our own. We didn't want you to know that you were adopted hence we changed Ash's birthday a year later so that you would not suspect. The only person who knew this was your grandparents and the Damiens," explained Manick calmly as he saw different emotions flash across his beautiful daughter's face.
Maya couldn't breathe, she felt her world crumble. She didn't want to believe such a story. He shook her head at the news but the sincerity in her father's face, the look in her mother's eyes and the way her brothers were behaving made her believe it. Her parents were not her parents. She was an orphan. She felt tears streaming down her cheeks but made no move to wipe it off.
She wished it was all a dream and tried to pinch herself, only with the shock of the pain did she start to accept it. She didn't know what to feel. She felt empty inside. She wanted to scream and say its not true. It was just a cruel prank her family were playing on her.
" You are joking right, Papa?" crooked Maya as she said the word Papa. A tear streamed down Malik's face as he shook his head with a crestfallen expression.
