Capítulo 3: Chapter 3 - Hunter Test
In this world, cities were surrounded by thick and towering walls, for fear of Beast Tide that could occur at any moment, which might cause thousands of lives to perish.
At the same time, due to the tense relationship between territories. During this time of aggression, when war was a common thing. Although it seemed peaceful, it was only at the surface. Small-scale wars happened everywhere and every moment.
An A-Rank city, Ciento City within the jurisdiction of Allcanta Kingdom was one of them. A relatively large-sized city where tens of millions of people lived. When Reid left his family, he chose to live in Ciento City due to it being A-Rank, where a branch of the Hunter Association was present, very far from home, and relatively remote, but could not be considered backward.
Hunter Association was created by many influential powers to train their forces. Simultaneously, the Hunter Association was also set as the battlefield for politicians, but not all power could enter it. They needed qualifications, and the war inside the Hunter Association was more intense than the war at the front line against the feral beasts.
Anyone could become a Hunter as long as they passed the Hunter Test. Reid once participated in the Hunter Test, but after seeing what kind of test it was, he gave up.
For he won't be able to pass even the first test. If he did not give up, at that time, he might have had lost his life. After all, the Hunter Test assessed the strength of an Extraordinary. For people like him who have no ability, it was no different from seeking death.
However, it was different this time.
Without wasting any seconds, Reid changed his clothes and opened his computer. After logging in to the Hunter Association Website with his account, he registered to the Hunter Test and immediately received a reply. A Proof of Participation.
After printing his proof, he went to the garage and rode on his not so conspicuous car to the Hunter Test Site.
The Hunter Association only has one building within Ciento City, and it was built outside the walls, near the Violet Sparrow Woods, where beasts were mostly weak Iron Level Tier 1. But even Iron Level Beast could easily slaughter dozen of people. Thus, they must not be underestimated as they were very aggressive. Even more so as their animal instincts were strengthened, which made them more dangerous.
Nearing the city gate, Reid drove his car to the nearest parking lot and headed to the Hunter Site. He didn`t get lost because many people were going there as well. And like him, they were participating in the Hunter Test.
Arriving at the Hunter Test Site, Reid looked around and after seeing no familiar faces, he stood aside as he waited for the Examiner to arrive.
Isolating himself from the rest, Reid listened to the chatter around him.
"What do you think would be the exam this time?" A man asked his companion.
"If the examiner is still the same person, then it might be similar to the last exam."
"An elimination match?"
"Not really. Last time, it was by collecting tokens protected by beasts within the designated time. Only the top ten can pass the test."
"That's right. I'm eliminated at that time..."
"Because you're too weak."
"Who is weak?! Looking for a beating?!"
"Come on! I'm not afraid of your six-packs! I have eight packs!!"
And after waiting for several minutes, the Examiner finally show up. On the high ground, a bearded bald old man wearing summer clothes, shorts, and slippers came up and cough. Then, the noise ceased.
"Welcome to the Hunter Test, boys, and gals. Because I am in a hurry we will do a quick exam! And I am your Examiner, Old Rosh." Old Rosh said as his eyes observed the participants, he continues. "The test is very simple. Royal Ramble! Fight until only the last ten participants are left standing! Only the ten of you can become a Hunter!"
10 chairs were placed before the high ground and Old Rosh briefly explained the rules. "Those that could sit on the chair will pass and become a Hunter! The only rule is no bloodshed! But! Broken ribs and missing limbs is quite okay! We have a dedicated nursing team waiting for you at the back!"
Caught off guard by the test, a purple wall suddenly appeared out of thin air and enclosed the entire site, enclosing all the participants within. Old Rosh signaled happily, ignoring the curses. "Let the game begins!"
"Fuck! What an irresponsible old man!"
"Ahh! Stop! Don`t attack me! Aren't we a team?!"
"I`ll kill you! The chair is mine!"
"Hahaha! Come to Uncle!"
"P-Please, don`t target me! I-I-I abstain!"
Standing at the corner, Reid watched as the test site turned into a mess. Some people betrayed their companions, some that deeply trusted each other joined forces and defeated the other participants.
Of course, there was a tacit understanding among the participants. They only knocked down the opponent as they knew that killing in an open was not allowed. If found, they might be disqualified.
Looking at the nearby empty chair, Reid walked towards it. Wondering through the battlefield unimpeded was not an easy thing even if he was invisible. There were many stray attacks after all. You must dodge them of course, or you would be hit.
Passing through the battle of dozen of people, Reid dodged their attacks perfectly and arrived at the 10th seat. He sat down without any care and waited for the participants to eliminate each other.
Reid thought that he could be an oriole, the chair suddenly lighted up startling the other participants.
"Oh? Someone is sitting on the 10th seat!"
"But why there is no one?"
"Idiot! It must be an invisible ability!"
"Fuck! We're fighting here while this bastard sits down and watches us!"
"Kill him first!"
Not caring if the chair would be destroyed, many attacks flew on the 10th seat where Reid sat. Knowing that the participants couldn't see him at all and blindly attacking, he stood up and went aside, and waited for the last 10 men standing.
There was a chance to not do anything and pass the exam easily, why bother wasting effort?
Seeing their attacks fell on the 10th seat and the light on it dimmed, they quickly shifted their attention to other people. Then, the site became a mess once again.
After several minutes, among the 300 participants, only 3 groups remained. And each group has seven people. Most people that participated in the Hunter Test have backings of either a family or an organization, but the Hunter Test was an elimination ground for these forces.
Which was why they were all desperate. If they were eliminated, their backings would be disappointed. Such a thing was not something they wanted to see.
Guarding against each other, eyes exchanged messages.
"Since there were only 10 places, why not choose four people among us to be fair? After all, we all have seven people in our corresponding groups. We're also exhausted and fighting would only lead to serious injuries." The leader of the 3rd group said as he tried to persuade the other groups with reason.
Unlike the other groups, his team was organized by him alone and he has no backing. It is easy to drop three of his companion.
However, the other two sides did not reason with him and joined forces against them. They were attacked by the combined force of the two and were shortly eliminated.
A brown-haired man sneered and kicked the knock-out leader of the 3rd group. "What a fool."
He turned his attention to the other group and said. "Now there were only the two of us. Our groups must pass this exam or our organization would punish us."
The leader of the 2nd group answered solemnly. "I know what you want to convey and we are the same."
"Kill them!" The 2nd group leader signaled his companions as they quickly spread out and surrounded the other group.
Six earth walls formed at all sides and rushed towards the other group, blocking their escape. From this attack alone, the 2nd group has already won. As long as two members of the other side were knocked out, the Hunter Test would be over. With the 2nd group as the winner.
The other side did not show weakness and fought back. Two of the walls were blasted, but the other four walls hit their group and knocked out four of their member, for they were already too exhausted.
The 2nd group stopped attacking as the purple walls cracked and disappeared. Then, Old Rosh came to them and gave them their respective Hunter Card.
"Oh! You passed! These are your Hunter Cards. Don't lose them because if you lose them, you can only take another Test to replace them." Old Rosh tossed the cards at them.
The 2nd group thanked Old Rosh. And when they saw him tossing another card in another direction, their faces became wonderful.
Old Rosh laughed happily. "Hahaha! I like prudent kids. You have my style when I was young! Passing the test without a sweat!"
"Anyway, Congratulations on passing and becoming a Hunter! Now, if you excuse me. I still have to continue my vacation." Old Rush walked away gleefully. "Hehehe! Busty babes, here I come!"
The last 10 people on the test site looked at Reid with hatred and anger. They fought very hard, but someone benefited from their struggle without paying anything. How could they not resent him?
Reid put his Hunter Card in the Inventory and looked at the 10 people. He smiles faintly and politely gave his gratitude before leaving, ignoring their distorted and darkened expressions. "Thanks for carrying me. Hahaha!"
Walking deeper into the forest, Reid search for a relatively hidden place to test his abilities. Delving into his consciousness, he willed the terrifying force within him into the outside and focused it on his fist. A purple aura wrapped his fist and made the air tremble.
"So this is Destruction Force. A power only meant for destruction." Reid muttered while feeling the power wrapping his fist. Increasing the amount of Destruction Force, the purple aura grew deeper in color as the fist that was already strong, became more powerful by a hundred times, which was the limit his body could withstand without being destroyed by the mighty Destruction Force.
Reid felt that if he used his fist to attack, it could raze a mountain. Thinking about it, he punched the large tree before him. Space was still and then an explosion occurred. His punch was so powerful that a ravine that was several hundred meters was created.
Seeing what he had done, and knowing that the noise he made was surely noticed by others, Reid left decisively. He did not want to be questioned as he felt that it was very troublesome. And so, he decided to stop testing his abilities and went home.
