Ian was feeling better after Rose had used Cure Wounds to heal him. He stood tall and his stick was itching to hit some shit. The zombie was distracted by the three enemies hitting it at close range and one that was hitting it from distance. It seemed to get a little agitated, but the flow of the battle changed when the zombie cleaved into Derek's leg.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHh!!!!!!!!!"
Derek howled in pain as the massive axe became buried in his left thigh. Markus lost focus for a minute and the zombie batted him away with the large shield. Zoe was punched in the stomach by the zombie's free hand and Alice began to panic greatly. At this moment, Ian took over the situation and began to bark orders to Alice and Derek.
"Alice, help Derek stop the bleeding and get Markus and Zoe over to Rose. Have her start healing Derek as soon as her energy gets back and she has enough mana. Derek, I need you to stay strong and don't take the axe out of your leg until Rose has enough mana. We don't know how deep the cut is and it could have gotten something vital. Zoe and Markus' armor will protect them a little from the blunt blows, so they can wait on healing for a bit."
"What are you gonna do?"
"I'm gonna by some time. I know it didn't work out that well last time, but we need time and that's all I can do right now."
Ian grabbed Markus' buckler off his arm and with his stick in his right hand, he got ready to square up against the massive zombie. The zombie lifted its shield and prepared to ram Ian into the wall, but Ian was ready for this trick. The zombie charged at full speed at Ian and slammed the shield into him. Ian sidestepped the zombie and used the buckler to redirect the zombie towards the open doors. The zombie's angle was off, however and it crashed into the door frame which caused part of the door hinge to break off.
"Damn it, I thought it would at least fall down the stairs. Now, I'm just gonna have to get lucky."
The zombie got up and spun around to face Ian. It howled with anger and looked over at Derek. It saw that its axe was still in his leg and it would be helpful right now. Of course, the axe was probably the only thing that could potentially be saving Derek's life right now until Rose recovered enough mana to heal him. Ian noticed the direction the zombie was looking at and tried to formulate a plan. He did the only thing he could think of and threw his stick again, but first he tied his knife to his stick to make a makeshift spear and then threw it. The spear traveled through the air and nailed the zombie in the shoulder. It dropped its shield and used its left hand to remove the makeshift spear from its arm. It took the spear and launched it back at Ian who it almost hit, but he dodged it and recovered it. He took the spear and aimed carefully for the head of the zombie. With one good hop forward, he hurled the spear right into the side of the zombie's head. The zombie fell into the wall and stopped moving.
Ian rushed over to the zombie and drove the spear home into the head.
*Ding*
The sound that came after obtaining experience points went off and Ian checked his status.
"Status."
Ian
Level: 1 Exp: 265/ 1000
'150 experience for killing one giant zombie!!!!'
Ian had to quickly get over the surprise and check on his friends. Zoe and Markus were still unconscious, and Derek was in a lot of pain. Rose was about full of mana again and Alice was calming down from all the excitement. Ian checked everyone's packs for anything that could be used to help Rose get her mana back faster.
"Hey Ian, I think there might be a mana potion in my pack."
"Well, that might be the only reason we get through the rest of the dungeon."
Ian looked through Alice's pack and after a few minutes found a dark green potion that looked like vegetable juice with nothing, but green vegetables. It smelled like mint and was a little sweet, so it was favorable for those with a sweet tooth. However, these potions were extremely hard to make as the ingredients were rare. Gyrax had apparently given Alice two potions and Ian had found both, but he decided to save one of them for later. He grabbed one of the potions and ran over to Rose. Rose took the potion and chugged it as fast as she could, then she felt a wave of energy wash over her as she had regained some of her mana.
"Rose, start healing Derek and then, if you can, move on to Zoe and then Markus."
"Alice, you provide long range cover fire to protect Rose. I'll be the vanguard until the others are back on their feet."
Ian quickly ran over to the gate and went to the corpse of the zombie to retrieve his spear. He removed his knife from the stick and put the knife back in his boot. He marched back up the stairs and acted as a guard until everyone was all healed up.
After a couple of hours between Derek getting his leg healed and Markus and Zoe recovering from getting swatted like flies, the group began the descent down to the second floor. The second floor was very different from before as the floor was more like caverns with stalactites up above and stalagmites near their feet. The heroes had to be careful as it would be harder to navigate the floor with the various twisting caverns and dark, low ceiling. The ceiling of the floor was only about six feet and seven inches tall, so Markus and Derek had a little bit of space between their heads and the ceiling.
Markus stopped walking and turned to face everyone. "We need to change our game plan because we got destroyed fighting that zombie. Ian, how were you able to kill it?"
"I just got a lucky hit; it took a blow to head and hit the wall. I ran up to it and drove my spear farther in just to ensure the kill. I got 150 experience for it; it was ridiculous."
"You got 150, that's the same as 30 zombies. If Rose had finished it off, then she would be that much closer to level 2. Well, going based off what we learned from the guards and the first floor, the deeper we go the more enemies there will be and the more experience they'll give us."
Derek had a puzzled kind of look like he knew something the others didn't. "Hey Ian, remember how in some games there is usually like a mini boss before the next floor of each dungeon? Could the big zombie have been something like that?"
"Yeah, it's possible. We didn't think about something like a floor boss before coming down here, so we caught off guard. The floor boss is obviously stronger, faster, and much better equipped than the basic enemies. We also have yet to encounter any variants, so we need to keep our eyes peeled. I don't like being in a cave though."
"I feel ya, being in a cave where it's hard to see can be a big problem because the enemies could be hiding and we can't see them, but they can see us."
After some deliberating, they decided that while Alice using her magic to make fire would be useful, it could be a problem as it would eat up her precious mana and they only had the one spare potion. As the group got deeper into the caverns, they began to hear a clacking noise like stone on stone or something. They rounded a corner and saw a horrifying site as there were roughly 80 skeletons with varying weapons and armor. Some skeletons had no armor and bows while others had leather armor with swords and shields. Then there was one that was different from the others as it had black robes and a long wooden staff that curled at the top.
The team started to form a huddle to develop a new plan, but before they could Zoe kicked a rock towards the horde of skeletons. They all looked at the heroes and, without giving them a chance to formulate a plan, charged in for combat. The mage pointed its staff at the group and started to chant, which was weird as the mouth of the mage wasn't moving. The chanting was almost like an echo that spread out throughout the caverns. About halfway through the chanting, a small blue ball began to form and once it got to around the size of a baseball, electricity began to spark on the outside. As the size of the ball grew, so did the electric arcs coming from the ball until it got roughly to the size of a watermelon then it was launched at the heroes.
"Scatteeeeeerrrrrr!!!!!"
The heroes continue on their way down the dungeon. What will they have to deal with in this floor?
Who knows?
