Deep within the Ocleau Forest sat a wood cabin. Inhabiting the wood cabin was a makeshift family comprising of two young boys, one little girl, and two men.
As one of the men sat at his desk, a knock at the door came.
"Mikael," a voice called out.
The man half attentively turned his head around, met by his partner, Larkin.
"Just one more second," Mikael replied before turning back around.
"Three," Larkin began.
"Two," he continued the count.
"One,"
The next moment, a frightening, rather gruesome picture appeared on Mikael's computer screen.
"Ah!" Mikael shrieked, jumping backward at the sight of the display.
"Larkin!" He exclaimed angrily.
"I told you to stop doing that already!" He roared.
"Oh, come on now," Larkin teased.
"What we've seen back in our days as killers is nothing compared to this!" He laughed, wiping away a tear.
"Yeah, I suppose…" Mikael grumbled.
"Anyway," Larkin began.
"I needed to talk to you about something," he continued.
"Well, can it please wait?" Mikael frowned.
"I'm really busy right now." He said, letting out a sigh.
Larkin raised a brow.
"Hoho?" He chuckled.
"I bet you wouldn't say that to the kids now, would you?" He teased.
"Well, it's a good thing you aren't a kid, isn't it?" Mikael huffed, beginning to lose patience with Larkin and his antics slowly.
"Besides," Mikael continued, looking up at Larkin.
"What's got you in such a playful mood?" He questioned, placing a hand on his cheek.
Larkin looked at him, then frowned.
"A-ah, sorry, I didn't mean to offend you…!" Mikael cried out, waving his hands frantically.
"You know, it's just…" He continued, looking down steadily.
"You seem off lately, is all…" Mikael frowned.
"Hey, Mikael," Larkin began.
As Mikael looked up, Larkin's face was inches from his.
"L-Larkin…!" Mikael gasped, jumping back.
"Seriously, what's been going on lately?!" Mikael exclaimed.
"You've been acting distant with the kids and-"
Before he could finish, Larkin grabbed his face, pulling Mikael closer to him.
Mikael's face turned bright red as he stood up from his chair.
Don't tell me… Am I dreaming…? He thought to himself, blushing profusely.
"There's something I've needed to tell you, Mikael," Larkin continued, leaning in.
"Y-yes…?" Mikael stammered, slowly leaning in.
"Mikael!" A voice suddenly called out.
The two quickly whipped their heads around, greeted by the oldest child, Rick.
"You've got to be kidding me…" Larkin muttered.
"Y-yes, what is it, Rick?" Mikael asked.
"Um…" Rick said, standing in the doorway.
Don't tell me he saw everything that happened just now…?! Mikael thought to himself.
"I-I was just going to tell you that Norio fell and scraped his knee…" He frowned.
"Oh, dear…" Mikael sighed, brushing a strand of hair behind his ear.
"Larkin," he began.
"Hm?" Larkin turned to him.
"Do me a favor; can you go get me the first aid kit, please?" He asked.
"M-mm…" Larkin nodded his head, heading towards the doorway.
"S-sorry…" Rick whispered as Larkin walked past him.
*
As they made their way outside to the front of the house, Norio was sitting there holding his knee and crying.
"Did he hit the ground hard?" Mikael asked, looking down at Rick.
"M-mm…" Rick nodded.
Something must be bothering him; he's acting unusually quiet… Mikael frowned.
"Alright," Mikael began, clapping his hands together.
"Hang in there, Norio; Larkin went to go get the first aid kit," Mikael reassured, kneeling and stroking the boy's head.
"Mikael," Larkin called out, walking over with the first aid kit and Iris Azalea In his arms.
"Hey, you!" Mikael greeted, flashing the girl a big smile.
"Oh, you found it, great, thank you!" Mikael smiled as he took the first aid kit from Larkin.
"This might sting, but only for a minute," Mikael began as he gently dabbed rubbing alcohol onto Norio's cut.
"A-ah…!" Norio squeaked.
"There, all done!" Mikael beamed as he finished placing a band-aid over the cut.
Norio sat there in silence for a moment before looking up.
"Hm?" Mikael frowned, cocking his head.
"C-can you kiss the boo-boo…?" Norio whispered.
Mikael blushed.
"O-of course…" He said, smiling gently as he kissed the boy's knee.
"All better?" Mikael questioned, smiling softly at the boy.
"M-mm…!" Norio nodded, giving a big smile.
"Alright, up you go," Mikael began as he picked Norio up.
As he turned back to the others, Mikael noticed a cut on Rick's arm.
"Rick, did you fall too?" He frowned.
Rick's eyes widened, turning to Larkin before turning back to Mikael.
"Y-yeah, a few days ago…!" Rick said, giving a nervous laugh.
Mikael then looked at Larkin.
"Did he tell you about this?" He asked.
"Yes, I cleaned it up after he came to me about it," Larkin said matter-of-factly.
I knew it; there must be something wrong after all… Mikael thought to himself, narrowing his eyes.
"It's just," He began.
"Usually, the kids come to me with their problems…" He frowned.
"Well," Larkin began.
"Larkin, may I speak with you?" Mikael interrupted.
Larkin looked at him with a puzzled look on his face.
"If it helps you sleep at night, I suppose…" He mumbled, turning around.
What on earth is going on… Mikael thought to himself as the makeshift family headed back to their wood cabin.
