Shri Digambar Jain Lal temple

Shri Digambar Jain Lal temple (with its attached charity bird hospital) is nearby.

Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib

Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib has been built on the spot where the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, was beheaded by Emperor Aurangzeb in 1675.

Paranthe Wali Gali

Paranthe Wali Gali has sequential shops located one after the other known for selling paratha, a typical Indian unleavened thin bread. The food sold in Paranthe Wali Gali is strictly vegetarian, presented in old retrospective style without any addition of onion or garlic to the food.

This is because the owner of the particular series of a shop is a Brahmin and the neighborhood includes the Jain population. The menu includes mix paratha, khoya parantha, rabri parantha, parat parantha. The parantha generally is served along with mint, mixed or sweet tamarind chutney, potato or paneer curry sautéed with rich sweet and spicy pumpkin.

Gauri Shankar Temple

The temple is dedicated to Shivji and Parvatiji. It is easily reached by Delhi Metro. Red Fort Metro station is the nearest metro station. A Jain temple named Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir is also nearby. You can combine this place with chandni chowk visit.

Jama Masjid

The people of Delhi consider the Masjid-I Jahan Numa close to them, hence call it fondly as the Jama Masjid of Delhi. It is one of the largest mosques in India which was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656.

The courtyard boasts its space that can accommodate more than 25000 people at a time. The three domes seen on the terrace are surrounded by the two minarets as well as the floor is comprised of 899 black borders marked for worshippers. Though the British wanted the mosque to be destroyed, they could not succeed in the process due to rigid opposition and protests. The largest mosque in India is a mesmerizing monument which was the last one built under Shah Jahan's power.

Tomb of Razia Sultana

Razia Sultan was the first female ruler who ruled over the largest so far area in India. Times were more traditional and she attracted opposition ieven from her brothers. After a brief reign of 4 years she died fighting a war against her brother in 1240 AD. This tomb, near Turkman Gate is said to be hers and is totally ordinary and is in utter neglect. Other three graves in the structure are not identifiable. At the tomb one gets philosophical. Times change. Today you are ruler, tomorrow you are forgotten and nobody cares.

You will see some very old shops and mansions here like Ghalib ki Haveli of Mirza Ghalib,. Dariba Kalan is the market for silver and gold jewelry.Today, most of the shops in Dariba Kalan trade in costume jewellery. Some also deal in authentic ittar, a special variety of perfume. These stores date back to the early 19th century. Also near by is Kinari Bazaar, Gali Kazanchi, and Gali Paranthe Wali, also at both ends of the street are famous jalebi shops.

Nai Sarak is the wholesale market for stationery, books, paper and decorative materials. Chawri Bazar is a big market for greeting and wedding cards as well as plumbing and sanitaryware and accessories. Lal Kuan is a wholesale market for hardware and hotel kitchen equipment. Located at the western end of Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli is a street entirely dedicated to all kinds of spices, dried fruits, nuts, herbs, grains, lentils, pickles and preserves/murabbas. Tilak Bazaar is a wholesale market for industrial chemicals. The Cloth Market supplies home furnishing fabrics, including ready-made items as well as design services.

"Please be back within an hour as time is moving fast. As the offices close, we can get stuck in traffic jams,"the tourist guide said.

We set off buying a few tinklets etc, Dada ji found the ittar shop and bought a bottle for Dadi ji. Tania also bought a bottle for herself. They say the jain temple, the Gauri Shankar temple as wel as the Sis Ganj Gurudwar, a nearby church as well as the Jama Masjid and wonder at the promixity of these religious buildings. They also tasted the paranthas in the parantha wali gali, the kulfi and the jalabis. They paid a visit to the Tomb of Razia Sultana too.

Within an hour they were back to the Car and were on their way.

"Now we will are going to Raj Ghat," said the Tourist Guide.

Raj Ghat

Raj Ghat is an important landmark for India as it is a memorial to the father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhi. It used to be the name of a historic ghat of Old Delhi that is Shahjahanabad situated on the banks of Yamuna River. A black marble platform that symbolizes the spot of Mahatma Gandhi's cremation happened on 31st January 1948.

An eternal flame burn at the end. A stone path that leads to the walled enclosure. Visitors are required to remove their footwear before entering the walls of the Raj Ghat.

To the north of the Raj Ghat is where the memorial of Jawaharlal Nehru and is known as Shantivan. Ekta Sthal, the site where K R Narayanan was cremated is also located adjacent to Nehru's cremation site. The area of the Raj Ghat is made beautiful by a lot of trees around planted by the dignitaries and heads of states visiting the sites.

The Car stopped and they all went out to pay their respect at Raj Ghat.

Within 20 minutes they were back.

"We will be pass by the Science Museum and the Purana Quila as well as Pragrati Maidan where countries from all over the world exhibit their products. But all places require a full day each to visit. Lodhi Gardan, and Sanjay Gandhi Park as well as Nehru Park are other such place where you can take long walks but visits here cannot be covered in one day. So we will ensure ample days to visit these places on our return journey. "

"From here we will proceed to South Delhi via South Avenue, Shanti Path (which houses most of the embassies), passing the Nehru planaterium within the Jawaharlal Nehru complex (Trimurti Bhavan) now being turned into a museum for all artifacts etc of all previous prime ministers. We we will also pass the statues being led by the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. We will head for the Lotus Temple or the Bhai Temple as well as the oldest Kailash temple nearby. "
