The meeting after that was concluded on a positive note, with plans set in motion to integrate Lu Qian, Liang Xi, and Wang Yi into the various projects and initiatives underway in Lie Fan's domain. As they left the main hall, Lie Fan felt a sense of satisfaction and anticipation. The addition of these talented individuals would undoubtedly strengthen their efforts and bring him closer to his goals.
As Lie Fan was contemplating the fortunate turn of events, he thanked Liu Ye for his role in bringing Lu Qian into his service, acknowledging that without Liu Ye's invitation, they might not have gained the additional talents of Liang Xi and Wang Yi.
Liu Ye, modest as always, responded with a humble smile, "My lord, it is due to your destiny and fortune that Liang Xi and Wang Yi decided to come along with Lu Qian. My part was merely to assist in the unfolding of fate."
Lie Fan smiled, appreciating Liu Ye's words. However, his curiosity about the person who recommended Wang Yi to seek refuge in Xiapi lingered. He turned to Liu Ye and asked, "Ziyang, do you have any idea who this person might be, the one who guided Wang Yi here?"
Liu Ye shook his head, indicating that he too was puzzled by the mysterious benefactor. "I am as perplexed as you are, my lord. There is no information I can provide regarding this individual."
Determined to uncover the identity of this mysterious guide, Lie Fan decided to have the Oriole, use their network of intelligence, to investigate the matter. He gave the order to one of his trusted servants who was an Oriole agent to start the investigation discreetly. "We need to know who is watching over us from the shadows. I want a full report as soon as possible."
With that decision made, Lie Fan and Liu Ye turned their attention back to discussing the Xiapi Expansion Project. They delved into the intricacies of the infrastructure plans, resource allocation, and the ongoing progress of how much of the buildings have been made. The conversation was productive, and the vision for Xiapi's future became clearer with each point they discussed.
Suddenly, their meeting was interrupted by a messenger who burst into the room, his face flushed and breathless from running. Lie Fan and Liu Ye both looked up, momentarily startled by the abrupt intrusion.
Before they could reprimand the messenger for his lack of decorum, the young man blurted out, "My lord, forgive my intrusion, but Lady Diao Chan has gone into labor. Lady Ying Yue sent me to inform you and urge you to return to the Lie Clan estate immediately."
Lie Fan's eyes widened with a mix of excitement and concern. He quickly rose from his seat, his mind racing with thoughts of Diao Chan and their impending child. "Thank you for delivering the message. I will head there at once."
Liu Ye stood as well, offering a reassuring smile. "Go, my lord. Your presence is needed there. I will handle the paperwork here in your absence."
Lie Fan nodded, grateful for Liu Ye's support. He hurried out of the main hall, his thoughts consumed by the well being of Diao Chan and their unborn child. The journey back to the Lie Clan estate seemed to stretch on forever, his heart pounding with each step.
Upon arriving at the estate, Lie Fan was met by the concerned faces of his household. Ying Yue, her own anxiety evident, approached him swiftly. "Sister Chan is in the medical room. The midwives are with her, but she has been asking for you Husband."
Without hesitation, Lie Fan made his way to the medical room. The sound of Diao Chan's labored breathing and the midwives' calming voices filled the room.
As he entered, Diao Chan looked up, her face pale but determined, her eyes locking onto his with a mixture of relief and love seeing that her Husband was finally here. Not caring about the midwives telling him to go outside, Lie Fan rushed to her side, taking her hand in his. "I'm here, Chan'er. I'm here with you, don't be afraid, take a deep breath and push."
She squeezed his hand, drawing strength from his presence. The midwives continued their work, guiding Diao Chan through the final stages of labor. Time seemed to blur as Lie Fan stayed by her side, offering words of encouragement and support.
After what felt like an eternity, a newborn's cry pierced the air. The midwives smiled, their efforts rewarded with the safe delivery of a healthy baby. They handed the child to Diao Chan, who cradled the baby with tears of joy streaming down her face. Lie Fan, overcome with emotion, gently touched the baby's tiny hand, feeling an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude.
"It's a boy," one of the midwives announced with a beaming smile. "Congratulations, my lord and lady." as the midwife said so, she wrapped the baby boy with a warm blanket after wiping the baby with warm water.
Lie Fan looked at Diao Chan, his heart swelling with pride and happiness. "Thank you, Diao Chan. You have given me a beautiful son and now we have both a son and a daughter together." Lie Fan kissed Diao Chan on the forehead to express his affection for what she had done.
Diao Chan smiled weakly, her exhaustion evident, but her joy undeniable. "Please let me see our son, I want to see our son's Husband."
As soon as Diao Chan said those words, the midwife who held the baby boy immediately handed him to Diao Chan. She let out a tired but happy smile, playing with the baby's tiny fingers.
Lie Fan, touched by the sight, felt his heart swell with warmth. He took a handkerchief and gently wiped the sweat from Diao Chan's face, his voice soft and caring as he asked, "Chan'er, do you have a name prepared for our son?"
Diao Chan shook her head, her smile never fading as she turned to look at Lie Fan. "No, Husband. I wanted you to name him."
Lie Fan's smile widened, touched by her trust. He began to mull over the perfect name for their second son. After a few moments of contemplation, his eyes lit up with inspiration. "Yuxuan," he said softly. "It means 'universe high,' a name that symbolizes our hopes for him to soar high and achieve great things in the future."
Diao Chan repeated the name a few times, her smile growing brighter with each repetition. "Lie Yuxuan," she said finally, nodding in approval. "It's a beautiful name. Our son, Yuxuan. Welcome to this world Xuanxuan."
As Lie Fan and Diao Chan spent time bonding with little Xuanxuan, the news of the birth quickly spread across Xiapi. The people, hearing that Lady Diao Chan had given birth to a healthy son, rejoiced. The news brought a wave of celebration and goodwill among the populace, who were genuinely happy for their lord.
The nobles, merchants, and scholars of Xiapi were quick to send their congratulations to the Lie Clan estate. They began preparing gifts to celebrate the birth, hoping to strengthen their relations with Lie Fan and the Lie Clan. The atmosphere in Xiapi was festive, with people celebrating in the streets, lighting lanterns, and sharing sweets to mark the joyous occasion.
Back at the estate, Lie Fan took a moment to reflect on the past few months. The addition of new talent to his team, the strengthening of his domain, and now the birth of his son filled him with a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. He looked at Diao Chan, who was still cradling Yuxuan, her face glowing with maternal love and happiness.
After some time, Lie Fan decided to let Diao Chan rest and took Yuxuan in his arms. The baby looked up at him with curious eyes, and Lie Fan couldn't help but smile. "Welcome to the world, Xuanxuan," he whispered. "You are part of a legacy that I hope you will carry forward with pride."
Ying Yue who entered the medical room, approached with a gentle smile. "Husband, the midwives have prepared Sister Diao Chan's room so that she can take a rest. Shall we move her there?"
Lie Fan nodded, and with the help of the midwives, they carefully moved Diao Chan to a comfortable room where she could rest and recover. Yuxuan, now sleeping peacefully in Lie Fan's arms, was placed in a cradle beside her.
As Diao Chan drifted off to sleep, Lie Fan sat by her side, watching over his family. The sense of fulfillment and contentment he felt was immeasurable. He knew that the journey ahead would be demanding, but at this moment, surrounded by love and hope, he felt ready to conquer any obstacle.
The days that followed were filled with visits from well-wishers and the delivery of gifts. Each visitor brought their congratulations and tokens of goodwill, ranging from finely crafted garments for the newborn to rare and valuable items meant to honor Lie Fan and Diao Chan.
Lie Fan made sure to personally thank each visitor, showing his appreciation for their support and kindness. Of course, he knew these nobles, merchants, and scholars all came with other intentions in mind, but as long as they acted courteously he would do the same.
While Lie Fan received the guests who came to his estate to congratulate him, inside the estate, his other wives Ying Yue, Cai Wenji, and Lu Lingqi kept Diao Chan company in her room.
All their children were present, eager to see their little brother. Yanyan, the eldest and proud big sister, wore a cute smile as she gently played with Xuanxuan's tiny fingers. Her half-siblings soon joined her, their curiosity and delight palpable as they gathered around the crib.
The room was filled with laughter and warmth. Diao Chan, Ying Yue, Cai Wenji, and Lu Lingqi all watched the children with fond smiles. The sight of their little ones bonding with Xuanxuan brought a sense of unity and joy to their hearts.
Diao Chan, having rested for several days, had regained her vitality. She suddenly decided to tease Lu Lingqi, her voice playful. " Sister Lingqi, when will you join us in giving birth to Husband's child?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Lu Lingqi's face turned a deep shade of red, filled with a blush as she thought about the adult topic. Shyly, she replied, "I have decided not to become pregnant until I have at least accompanied my Husband on his campaign at least once."
The other women chuckled at her earnest response, understanding her desire to share in the warrior's life alongside her husband before settling into motherhood.
Ying Yue, ever the supportive sister-wife, placed a reassuring hand on Lingqi's shoulder. "You will be a wonderful mother when the time comes, Sister Lingqi. For now, focus on your journey with our husband." Cai Wenji, with her gentle demeanor, added, "Each of us has our own path and timing. When you are ready, it will be a joyous occasion for all of us." Diao Chan nodded in agreement. "Yes, Sister Lingqi. We all look forward to that day. But for now, let us enjoy these precious moments with our children."

Ying Yue, ever the supportive sister-wife, placed a reassuring hand on Lingqi's shoulder. "You will be a wonderful mother when the time comes, Sister Lingqi. Diao Chan nodded in agreement. "Yes, Sister Lingqi. We all look forward to that day. But for now, let us enjoy these precious moments with our children."
Lu Lingqi smiled at the encouragement from her sisters, and they continued to talk about their daily lives and concerns about Lie Fan's increasing busyness, which could impact his health. The bond between the women grew stronger as they shared their worries and joys, creating a sense of unity and support within the household.
To the southwest of Xiapi, at Wuling, the situation continued to worsen for Liu Biao's forces. Cai Mao and the remnants of his army had not yet reached Wuling from Changsha, leaving Zhang Yun to lead the defenses as best as he could.
Despite his efforts, several times their defenses were nearly broken by Guan Yu's relentless attacks. Lady Cai, seeing the deteriorating situation, had Liu Cong order the entire high-ranking government of Liu Biao's administration to prepare for an emergency withdrawal to Lingling in case Zhang Yun and his army could no longer hold the defenses.
In Liu Bei's army encampment, Ju Shou and Kuai Yue were deep in discussion, strategizing ways to break through Wuling's defenses in a single attack. Their tent was filled with maps and tactical plans as they exchanged ideas. Guan Yu entered the main tent, his presence commanding attention.
"General Guan Yu," Ju Shou began, "we need your input on this plan. We're considering a night assault, taking advantage of the enemy's fatigue and lower visibility."
Kuai Yue nodded in agreement. "We believe that with the right timing and precise coordination, we can overwhelm their defenses before they have a chance to mount a proper response."
Guan Yu stroked his beard thoughtfully. "A night assault is indeed a bold move, Master Kuai Yue and Master Ju Shou. Zhang Yun had proven to be a capable defense leader, but even he would struggle to maintain discipline and readiness in his troops throughout the night."
Ju Shou pointed to a map. "We can split our forces into three groups. One will launch a frontal attack to draw their attention, while the other two flank from the sides, cutting off any retreat and reinforcing our main assault."
Kuai Yue added, "If we can create enough chaos and confusion, their lines will crumble. Zhang Yun will have no choice but to fall back or face complete annihilation."
Guan Yu nodded, his eyes glinting with determination. "Very well. We will execute this plan tonight. Prepare the troops and ensure they are ready for swift and silent movement."
As the preparations began, the mood in Liu Bei's camp was one of focused anticipation. Soldiers sharpened their weapons and reviewed their positions, knowing that the coming night could bring a decisive victory.
Meanwhile, in Wuling, night fell, and the tension in the air was palpable. Zhang Yun's forces were on high alert, knowing that Guan Yu's army was poised to strike at any moment. The silence of the night was broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant sounds of the enemy camp.
As the appointed hour approached, Guan Yu's forces moved with practiced stealth. The night assault commenced with a sudden, fierce intensity. The frontal attack drew the defenders' attention, while the flanking forces moved in swiftly from the sides, creating chaos and confusion within Zhang Yun's ranks.
Zhang Yun fought valiantly, rallying his troops and trying to maintain order. But the coordinated assault proved overwhelming. Guan Yu's forces breached the defenses, and the battle turned into a rout. Zhang Yun, realizing the futility of further resistance, ordered a retreat. His forces fled towards Lingling, harried by Guan Yu's pursuing troops.
Lady Cai's foresight in preparing for an emergency withdrawal proved invaluable. The high-ranking officials and their families managed to escape the chaos, making their way towards Lingling. The loss of Wuling was a significant blow to Liu Biao's forces, and the morale of his troops plummeted.
In the aftermath of the battle, Guan Yu and his commanders surveyed the battlefield. The victory was decisive, and the path to further conquests lay open before them. Ju Shou and Kuai Yue discussed the next steps, planning to capitalize on the momentum and continue their campaign.
Zhang Yun, retreating from Wuling, quickly dispatched a messenger to inform Cai Mao to head toward Lingling. With Wuling now in Liu Bei's hands, the urgency of the situation weighed heavily on him. After sending the messenger, Zhang Yun rode swiftly towards the Liu Clan caravan, which carried Liu Biao, Liu Cong, and Lady Cai, all guarded by the Liu Clan's personal army.
Inside the caravan, the atmosphere was tense. Liu Biao, weakened by illness, was scolding both Lady Cai and Liu Cong for their incompetence, which had led to the loss of Wuling. "Incompetent fools! Wuling was our last hope for a stronghold, and now it's lost because of your failures!" Liu Biao's voice was strained but furious. Liu Cong shrank behind his mother, silent and fearful, while Lady Cai tried to calm Liu Biao despite her own rising annoyance.
"Calm down, my lord," Lady Cai said soothingly, though her eyes betrayed her irritation. "We did what we could under difficult circumstances. This is not the time for blame."
Her attempts at placation only fueled Liu Biao's anger. "Not the time for blame? Your machinations and incompetence have brought us to this ruin!" His face contorted with rage, Liu Biao's frail body seemed to shake with the effort of his outburst.
In a sudden fit of anger, Liu Biao slapped Lady Cai, the sound of the impact echoing through the caravan. Liu Cong gasped in shock, stepping back as he saw his mother clutch her cheek, a red mark already forming. Just at that moment, Zhang Yun arrived, intending to report. Hearing the slap and the ensuing commotion, he threw open the curtain, only to see the aftermath of the slap.
Fury ignited within Zhang Yun as he saw the mark on Lady Cai's face. As a staunch ally and friend to both Cai Mao and Lady Cai, he couldn't contain his anger. "Lord Liu Biao, this is unacceptable!" he shouted. "Lady Cai has been nothing but loyal and dedicated, and yet you raise your hand against her?"
Liu Biao, shocked by Zhang Yun's reprimand, struggled to respond. "How dare you...?" he began his voice weak but laced with anger. However, before he could finish, a sharp pain pierced his chest. He grasped at his left side, his eyes widening in agony and realization.
Liu Cong rushed to his father's side. "Father, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice panicked. Liu Biao, however, was focused on the cruel smirks on the faces of Lady Cai and Zhang Yun. The pieces of a dark puzzle fell into place in his mind as he pointed a trembling finger at them.
"You... you've been poisoning me," Liu Biao gasped, the words barely audible. The realization struck him like a hammer blow. The closest people to him, the ones he had trusted, had been the architects of his downfall.
Liu Cong looked between his father and the two conspirators, confusion and fear written across his face. "What are you talking about, Father?"
Liu Biao's eyes, filled with a mixture of rage and betrayal, never left Lady Cai and Zhang Yun. "It was you all along," he managed to say, his voice a whisper of disbelief. "You've poisoned me... brought about my illness... why..."
Lady Cai's expression hardened, the facade of concern dropping. "Yes, my dear husband," she said coldly. "You were a hindrance to our plans. It's time for a new leadership, one that doesn't cling to the past and will always support the Cai Clan."
Zhang Yun stepped forward, his demeanor just as icy. "With you gone, Liu Cong will have the chance to succeed old fossil like you who clings to power. The future of the Liu Clan needs decisive action, not the feeble remnants of a sickly lord."
As Liu Biao's strength ebbed away, he looked at his youngest son, a mixture of regret and sorrow in his eyes. "Cong'er, beware of them," he said with his last breath. "Trust no one..."
Liu Biao's hand fell limply to his side as his life slipped away. Liu Cong, paralyzed by the revelation and the sudden loss of his father, could only watch as Lady Cai and Zhang Yun took control of the situation.
"We must keep moving," Lady Cai ordered coldly. "Liu Cong, you are the new leader of our clan. We will guide you through this, no need to worry. Mother, Uncle Cai Mao, and Uncle Zhang Yun will guide you through."
Still in shock, Liu Cong could only nod numbly. The caravan continued its journey towards Lingling, the atmosphere now filled with the cold reality of betrayal and the harshness of survival.
The fate of the Liu Clan of Liu Biao line now hung in the balance, resting on the shoulders of a young, inexperienced leader manipulated by those he should have trusted the most.
As they traveled, Zhang Yun and Lady Cai began to strategize their next moves, their voices low but firm. "We need to solidify our position in Lingling," Zhang Yun said. "The people must see that the transition of power is smooth and unquestionable."
Lady Cai nodded. "We will announce Liu Cong as the new lord immediately upon our arrival. His youth will be seen as a symbol of renewal and strength if we play this correctly."
Liu Cong, still reeling from the recent events, found himself at the mercy of these two calculating figures. His future, and that of the Liu Clan, would now be shaped by the ambitions and machinations of the people he thought as his family, the closest people to him who he trust and cared for but only thought of his as a puppet.
Back in Xiapi, the news of Wuling's fall and Liu Biao's death soon reached Lie Fan through the Oriole's network. Though he celebrated the birth of his son, he could not ignore the shifting political landscape. With Liu Biao's death, the power vacuum caused by his force would either crumble his force entirely or become some sort of a lifelong for the successor of Liu Biao, Liu Cong, who became the puppet of the Cai Clan.
