"Sasha!? Mrs and Mr Madison!? Are you there?" I called out as I took out the pepper spray and held it in front of me.
"Sasha!?"
"Anyone!?"
There were no signs of forced entrance and the furnitures of the hall was in the shape I remembered them to be. I wanted to call the police, but without any apparent violence they would probably not even bother to come anyway.
I stood before the threshold for a while and pondered about whether to enter or not. When I saw an old woman passing by on the street with her dog, I called out to her and tried to get her attention. She seemed to have noticed and walked up to me.
"Hi! Are you from this neighborhood?" I asked her while the Golden Retriever approached me.
"Hello there! Yes, I am living a few quarters away. What's the-? No! Bad boy!"
The owner pulled the leach when she saw her dog putting his nose in my crotch. He back down and whimpered. I also took a step back and felt awkward about the situation. Did I have my monthly period or something? Otherwise there wasn't really anything to smell down there.
"It's ok. He was just curious." I smiled, before getting serious.
"Do you know the family that lives here?" With my index finger I pointed at Sasha's house.
"The Madisons? I sure know them. I doubt that anyone in this neighborhood doesn't. The couple is such good people, you know."
The lady leaned over and put her free hand beside her mouth as if she intended to share a secret.
"Whenever I get some backaches or weird symptoms I go to Mr or Mrs Madison and they help me each time without requiring fees." She retreated and then continued.
"Such angles! You know, in my age, the medical fees are impossible to pay with my minimal pocket money. Therefore I am really grateful for these sweethearts. I wish I could kidnap them as my own children. Speaking of children, I wonder how my son is doing right now. You know, I have two children-"
I was starting to feel that the conversation was getting off the track. If something truly had happened to Sasha, there were more urgent things to do then to listen to this old granny narrate her entire life story. Therefore, I chose to interrupt her even though it was somewhat rude.
"Mrs? I am sorry to interrupt, but do you know where the Madisons are?"
"Oh?" The lady was stunned for a moment for having been interrupted before registering my question.
"No, I don't think so. You know, I am getting old and my body is starting to fail me, so my memory is getting worse. However, I can't make myself recall having seen them today."
The old woman frowned.
"That's weird now that I think about it. Usually, Mrs Madison would jog past me in the mornings as I take a walk with Bernard. This morning I didn't see her."
"Madam, I am afraid that something might have happened. Their door, as you can see, is unlocked and when I shouted, no one answered." I pointed with my index finger at the door I had knocked open.
"Oh dear, have someone broken into their house?" The lady was surprised.
"Maybe, but there are no signs of forced entrance. I haven't stepped inside yet. Can you wait outside with a phone ready? In case it will be needed?"
"Sure, but are you certain that you want to enter alone? I can follow you." The old woman changed her pose to seem more physical fit and strong. Though, I dared to bet my life on the fact that she wouldn't make any difference in case of an emergency.
"I am sure, but thanks." I gifted her a smile.
The old lady grabbed her bag and took out her old fashioned Nokia. When I saw this, I started to walk into the hall with my pepparspray in front of me.
As I stepped over the threshold, my pulse started to increase. I could feel the adrenaline course through my body, as I unconsciously thought of all the horror movies I had seen. This was like a scene stolen from one of those. Hopefully, I wouldn't end up like the unlucky characters.
I searched through the entire bottom floor, but found nothing unusual. Everything was in place and I even saw an opal necklace in gold on the desk in Sasha's parents' bedroom. It must be worth quite a sum of money, which indicated that no burglar was involved.
When I took the stairs up to the second floor, I contemplated to call out since the silence was creeping me out. However, I decided against it since it would reveal my presence to potential evildoers, if they weren't already aware it. Maybe I shouldn't have screamed outside the house?
With my heart beating fast, I scanned through the bathroom and the small family room, before stopping outside the door to Sasha's bedroom. This was the last room that hadn't been checked yet.
I took a few deep breaths before pulling down the handle against my better judgement. My gut had predicted that something bad was going to happen before I stepped outside my hall and sure it did. Before I even had the time to scream, everything blackened and I lost consciousness.
Oh no! xO
P.S Sorry for the delay. I have been busy with my other book and the collage x(
