[Daniel POV]
After a long day at the blacksmith shop, I finally had some free time to spend with Catherine and Arin.
Thanks to the immense variety of items in Hull, the girls were having the time of their life running around and trying new things.
I was, once again, forced to be their carrier. Even Catherine, who's normally reserved, approached me with some sketchy looking clothes.
It seems like Arin is really rubbing off on Catherine.
"Hey Daniel! Look at this! Isn't it cute?" Arin said the for umpteenth time.
Whenever she saw something new, she would label it as cute. And anything she disliked, she would force onto me.
On the other hand, Catherine would look at me guiltily whenever Arin did something like that. She's so damn adorable when she does that.
I just want to gobble her up and not let her back out. However, since we're in public, I can't do that.
Right now, the three of us are in front of a pet store. It's unbelievable that there can be such tiny animals in a world where beasts are rampant.
Maybe they've selectively bred them into docile and smaller versions of their wild counterparts?
The thing Arin told me to look at was a small wolf. In fact, it couldn't really be classified as a wolf, so it's more of a dog.
This is great, I can buy one of these and transplant my own dog's soul into it. He is technically dead after all.
Alright, it's decided! I approach the shopkeeper, who is an old lady. Her wrinkles are heavily etched onto her face, and her back has a slight hunch.
Noticing us walk over, she takes her hand off her walking stick and places it onto the table, stabilizing herself while waiting for us.
"Hello! I'd like to get two of those dogs." (Daniel)
"Oh, sure! That will be 20 gold." (Shopkeeper)
Maybe because of her age, she talks really slowly. She's also constantly mumbling something in between words that I can't quite make out.
The good thing is that she reacts quickly, and only her speech is slow. Unlike the sloths in a certain zoo movie.
I take out 20 gold coins, which I consider to be very little, and hand it to the old lady. She gasps in surprise, either because I seemingly took it out of thin air, or because of the amount of it.
I can tell from the blacksmith shop that the prices of things here are really low, and the only ones getting any profit from it are the travelling merchants.
I tried questioning Cairne about it, but apparently Prudor can't do anything about it either. After all, the town's reliance on these merchants are much heavier than it seems from the surface.
In the first place, Hull's agriculture is non-existent. Its food is all imported, even before this whole 'trade centre' fiasco happened. Now, even other daily necessities like clothing and lamps, even to firewood are all traded from outside.
The only thing that's still produced locally is probably the houses and certain metal items that come from blacksmiths.
Therefore, even if Prudor wanted to stop the imports, the town simply wouldn't survive without them. The only way would be to go into a recession, where the living standards of everyone decrease drastically.
From there, slowly building up their industry again and protecting it this time, will be the only way to revive its economy.
But something tells me that this is unlikely to happen. While Prudor seems smart, I doubt he has knowledge of the modern analysis of economics. Also, there's no guarantee that the industry will start to pick up again.
Staying in a recession and starving to death is also a very likely possibility.
The threat of beasts and beast waves could also force residents to move away and cause a population deficiency.
In any case, there's nothing that Prudor can do, and I sure as hell don't want to stick my nose into this.
Back to the old woman, she's finally recovered from her initial shock. She hands us the two cages that have dogs in them, and we leave the shop.
"Here you go, Arin." (Daniel)
"Why did you buy it for me?" (Arin)
"Well, you looked like you wanted it?" (Daniel)
"Well, thanks then. I'll 'repay' you tonight." (Arin)
My eyes widened as I heard what she said. Will I be popping my cherry tonight?
As we made our way back to the inn, I completely forgot about my appointment with Cairne to tour the walls of the town.
As a result, Cairne, who had waited at the inn for a good couple of hours, was rather angry.
"Daniel, where have you been? I've been waiting for so long!" (Cairne)
"Sorry… I kind of forgot!" (Daniel)
"Daniel, who's this?" (Arin)
"Ah, this is Cairne, the Guildmaster of the Adventurer's Guild here in Hull." (Daniel)
With a look of understanding on her face, Arin greeted him.
"Hello, Guildmaster! I'm Arin, Daniel's girlfriend." (Arin)
"Hello. Anyway, Daniel, we need to go to the walls now." (Cairne)
"Can we come along as well?" (Arin)
"Nya!" (Catherine)
"Uh… sure, I guess?" (Cairne)
"Alright, then let's go!" (Daniel)

[3rd Person POV]
The walls of Hull stood tall and proud. Acting as the first line of defence against any wild beasts, it had to.
With its construction ordered by the late King, who had seen the value of Hull's placement towards the east of the capital, the wall itself was over 10 metres tall, and its width was over 4 metres. It could easily fit three to four men side by side.
The ramparts were possibly the most impressive feature of the walls. With a parapet high enough to defend against any ranged attacks from below, the soldiers would have absolute protection. At the same time though, they would not be able to shoot at enemy soldiers.
Obviously, the previous King had opted for a more defensive wall, valuing the lives of the garrisoned soldiers over the deaths of enemy soldiers.
However, these ramparts were currently barren; not a single soldier nor weapon could be seen anywhere.
The majestic wall could be considered to be in ruins. Parts of the parapet were flaking off, and there were obvious indentations from when the enemy had fired their trebuchets and other projectiles.
On this wall, four figures appeared; two men and two women. Their presence here would signify the start of a change in the future of this wall.
I'm going to be busy tomorrow, but I'll try my best to release another 3 chapters.
