Standing to the side in a small room in the casino which had no windows, Liz tried to control her expression and not look at the man sitting in the chair in front of a table near her.
This was the first meeting they had arranged with one of the members of the interim council. There were eight in total, and this one was apparently ranked in the middle in terms of seniority.
He seemed to be at least 50 years old, which was evident by the graying hair and the wrinkled skin. Yet, these weren't the features that made Liz feel the urge to glance at him.
One of his eyes was missing, and what was strange was that there wasn't even an eyelid. Instead, there was only an empty hollow that creeped Liz out.
There were also multiple scars in just the skin that wasn't covered by the black T-shirt and jeans that the man was wearing. Also, when she had glanced down, she had noticed that there were three fingers missing on his right hand.
"You can look, Missy. At least you have the decency to not stare outright. Being the leader of a family with a ton of enemies isn't an easy job. I lost this finger when I was abducted by a rival family and was threatened to give up the secret locations of our bases. And I lost this one in a fight with the head of a different family. He bit it off. This one –"
The man was interrupted by the sound of the door opening, while Liz felt more thankful than ever that the CEO had chosen to enter at this point.
The gruesome images that had passed through her head during the man's speech had been difficult to stomach, and she couldn't guarantee that she wouldn't have puked if he had continued.
Even more than the images, the thing that unsettled her the most was the smile on his face as he described the way he lost each finger.
As the CEO nodded at her, Liz smiled, glad at his presence.
Yet, remembering that it was his decision for her to wait for him with the man in the first place, the smile was replaced by something close to a grimace.
Of course, she knew she couldn't blame him because he had been busy with handling the matter that was crucial to the discussion they were going to have now.
"Mr. Sylvex. I had something to handle, so I'm sorry for making you wait. I trust that my PA was good company?"
Smiling and showing a set of teeth in which at least four shone with a golden light, the man said, "Yes, she was. So, you are the son of that arrogant Bradshaw. You know, I met him long ago, and I see the resemblance. But, I get the feeling that he was much more ruthless. Anyway, I'm here. Now continue what you said on the phone."
The man spoke with a thick European accent, slurring many words and making them difficult to understand.
Nodding again, Will glance at Liz and said, "Give him the file."
After handing over the document that was in her hand, Liz moved back and stood beside the CEO before she began to speak.
"In the document is proof that you are the one behind the mining incident five years ago which claimed the lives of 45 civilians. The mistake was pushed onto one of your employees, who is still serving his jail sentence. The mining was on US land, so if we show this proof to the government and use the power we have, there will definitely be an international search warrant for your arrest. Of course, the media will also be used to push the US government forward to catch you using all means. If you choose to run, your entire life will be spent hiding like a rat. Instead, if you choose to side with Happle and follow our instructions, this document will not see the light of day. I hope you choose the former, because I don't think you deserve the latter."
As Liz said these words in a hateful tone, both the CEO and the man glanced at her with raised eyebrows.
Her expression was twisted into one of scorn, and her eyes looked like they were spitting fire. The result was that the man took these words very seriously, taking the document and reading through it.
"Miss Liz, clearly, you're unable to contain your emotions. Please wait outside."
Nodding, Liz stormed out of the room and banged the door shut behind her.
The final words she heard before the door closed was the CEO saying, "She's new, so she's not used to this-"
After the door completely closed, if that man were able to see her right now, he would definitely be astounded.
It was because all the hate was gone, and it was replaced by a smile that came from doing her job well.
Meanwhile, Keren, who was observing everything through the CCTV, looked up and said with an impressed expression "Good acting! You're a natural!".
This only made the smile on Liz's face turn into a grin, which she tried to hide before taking a seat beside Keren and looking at the image of the two men continuing their 'discussion'.
