Zhi Ruo snapped from her daydreaming when she heard the hushed whispers of the people around her. The light from the chandelier that shone down on her was suddenly blocked by a tall figure.
Looking up, she couldn't help but curse out her very terrible luck. She really needed to stop daydreaming in random places.
Mo Chou put on a small smile as he greeted her. "I didn't expect to see you here."
Wow. He even had the gall to walk up to her and put on a cheeky smile as if there wasn't enmity between them.
"Am I not allowed to be here?"
It wasn't that Zhi Ruo hated him. How could she hate the man she once loved? However, being near him caused her to inevitably remember the pain that she had to go through from the last few years. A reminder of her hideous past.
A frown showed on his face. "You know that's not what I meant."
He knew for a fact that Zhi Ruo did not want to see him but he wanted to make up. Or maybe start over with a clean slate. A relationship that's not built by their past mistakes. But he guessed it may only be his wishful thinking. Nothing could ever make up for his absence during the most important time in her life.
Zhi Ruo sighed and took a good look at his face. Puberty had really made him more mature and good-looking. His aura radiated warmth. His posture was no longer slouched and stood straight and lean. His absence in her life resulted in a calm temperament and reliable appearance.
"What do you want?" she said rather straight to the point.
"I... just wanted to see how you were doing. May I?" he gestured to the seat beside her.
Zhi Ruo resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Go ahead. As you can obviously see I'm alive and well, thanks for the concern."
Mo Chou had a sullen look on his face. His eyes were downcast as he struggled to find an opportunity for her not to hate him. Zhi Ruo faced away from him as she continued to stare at the mingling crowd who no longer spoke in hushed whispers but instead danced and discussed business with each other.
The atmosphere was silent as they both did not speak to each other even when minutes have passed.
...
Mo Yan felt pain looking at the awkward scene before her. 'Brother, you absolutely suck at courting a woman!'
She had left their parents in the room as soon as he left because of the suffocating silence that enveloped the room. Her mother looked like she just got the best birthday present ever and kept smiling while knitting a scarf, while her father looked like a heavy weight left him and had a relaxed face.
This made her feel extremely awkward, thus she left the room and mingled with the guests. When she heard the gossip of people about a pretty young woman with an unknown background, she immediately went to find her brother.
However what she saw was something completely unexpected. Good thing that she had managed to see him sitting to the side in the corner of her eyes. She saw her little brother stiff and awkward. In an attempt to salvage her brother's failure, Mo Yan hatched a plan in her mind. A smile bloomed on her soft features. 'Dear brother, you owe me for this!"
"Brother! So this is where you've been. I've been looking for you everywhere!" Mo Yan approached Mo Chou, pretending not to notice Zhi Ruo seated beside him.
Mo Chou noticeably frowned upon seeing his sister. She was most definitely not looking for him. And even if she was, there won't definitely be such a gentle smile on her face.
"What is it?"
"Oh, you know I just want to see what my dear brother is up to."
Mo Chou felt like vomiting. Such sweet words was unlike her. She definitely has a plan in mind. He pulled her arm and whispered in a low voice, "What're you up to?"
Mo Yan felt startled but quickly reverted back to a smile. "You'll thank me later."
Mo Yan glanced at Zhi Ruo who seemed to fail to notice her arrival before saying, "Ah? Zhi Ruo, is that you?"
Zhi Ruo raised her eyebrows and turned to look at who called her. Her eyes widened at the appearance of Mo Yan who looked at her with a gentle smile.
Mo Yan's smile widened when she saw how surprised the other looked. "You didn't tell me you were going to be here! I would've surely welcomed you."
Zhi Ruo had always looked up to Mo Yan ever since she was a teenager. She was always the student with the highest grades and was a very charismatic person. Her charm could not be denied because almost everyone at the school knew her. When she left, teachers would still speak highly of her and would often pick her as an example of a model student, the very best paragon. Seeing her now again years later shocked Zhi Ruo.
She had forgotten that Mo Chou and Mo Yan were related. However unlike the latter who became a legendary figure, the former was more low-key and quiet, preferring to be by himself and not socialize unless needed.
Zhi Ruo wiped the frown off her face and smiled. A genuine one. "I'm also very glad to see you. And no need for the welcome, I came here on behalf of my grandparents, so it was quite sudden. How are you?"
Mo Yan glanced at her brother who remained quiet but still looked at them intently. "I'm doing great actually! Mo Chou actually plans on giving me the position of CEO, which I'll gladly take but I don't know what's going on inside that head of his that he would choose to abandon his position."
Zhi Ruo's eyes widened and her jaw dropped slightly. Never would she have imagined Mo Chou to be the type of person to abandon his position despite reaching the pinnacle of his career. In her opinion, all of his efforts and time would've gone to waste.
Mo Yan discreetly winked at her brother and mouthed, 'Watch and learn.'
