Capítulo 11: Testing the VR

Sara set up her gaming suit and helmet beside her bed. It was incredible to look at; Sara couldn't take her eyes away from it. The helmet would cover your entire head when worn and was a glossy black, so shiny you could see your reflection in its surface. The suit was also black, with little grey stripes that connected small dots. Like a connect the dots picture that outlined your entire body while wearing it. The materials used were state of the art, the best of the best. The suit wouldn't be uncomfortable, would instead feel airy and light when worn. The helmet was cushioned on the inside, making it comfortable to lie in if one wanted. It regulated air flow and wouldn't cause you to be over heated, or have trouble breathing while wearing it.

Sara picked up the helmet; it was lighter than she thought it would be. Almost as if the technology it held was made of air, not wires and hardware. Actually, she couldn't even fathom what it took to develop something so cutting edge.

It was also durable. Dropping it wouldn't damage the product's ability to operate. It might scuff it up, make it look less attractive, but it would still do what it was made to do. The company that manufactured and distributed this particular model was a company called Modem. Their VR headsets and suits were some of the best on the market and their prices were just above average. Most people that were just starting out to engage in professional gaming or were looking for quality at a great price, started out buying a Modem VR set. It wasn't the best, but it was ONE of the best for beginners.

Sara couldn't wait to try out her new VR gear. Her heart raced at the thought of it.

It would still be a few weeks before IronAge was released, so she couldn't begin with that game, but she was itching to try out the built-ins that came with the set.

The games that came with the set weren't anything grand. It came with a chat group that was offered to those that bought the Modem VR gear, another game that was mostly just walking and learning to move around, and one other that was supposed to be a bit more realistic, though the "people" in the game were still animated. It didn't have much point, mostly just walking around, you had the option of fighting with the NPC's, but the NPC's wouldn't fight back. It was basically the equivalent of you beating up dummies.

Modem's VR equipment was pretty standard. It didn't have any bells or whistles to it, it mostly just focused on being a really good set for beginners. The "games" that came with the set were intended for people to learn how to use the set before actively playing a formal game.

Sara ran her hands over the glossy surface once again.

She couldn't wait to put it on and give it a run through, but her heart was beating so fast at the moment, she wondered if the helmet and suit would register it and kick her immediately from the system.

Hah.

Sara tried taking deep breaths to calm her nerves. It didn't seem to have much effect.

Her "calming" deep breaths grew in volume. Until a manic laughter was left in their place.

"Hah, hah, ha…Hahahahahahaha…HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Sara couldn't hold back her temporary outburst any longer. She sat, holding the helmet in her hands while she threw her head back into an almost crazed, villainous laughter.

Truly, if one were to see her at that moment, they would surely have agreed with the nurses that had cared for her in the hospital and she would have found herself on the first bus out of town, to the semi-local loony bin.

In Sara's mind, her laughter was the type that would be like music to the ears, something that others would commend her for as being "cute". Reality is seldom how we imagine, however….

After her momentary outburst was finished, Sara sat, her breathing still a bit labored, holding her helmet between her hands.

She stared down at its glossy surface one last moment, before rushing to put it on.

The helmet automatically switched on after registering someone using it. Sara waited for the helmet to begin the set up phase. As she waited, a warning flashed in front of her eyes.

-Modem VR Helmet model Tinted741 cannot find vitals. Please be sure that accompanying VR Light Weight Breathable Full Body Suit is functioning properly.-

Sara Balked at the message before cursing under her breath.

How had she forgotten to put on the suit?!?!?

Sara rapidly pulled the helmet from her head, and then began to unfold and pull the suit on. She paused in her movements as she realized she'd forgotten to remove her outer clothes. Cursing under her breath once again, Sara began to undress, leaving only her underwear on beneath, before once again pulling the suit on.

Finally, breathless and irritated at her rookie mistake, she pulled the helmet back over her head and slid it down.

This time, darkness no longer greeted her as long as it had before. Instead, the darkness dissipated as a new message popped up in front of her.

-Calibrating….Calibrating….Searching….Please wait.-

This time, the message was accompanied by a women's voice. Rather than sounding robotic, the voice was soothing and lifelike, as it read the message she was currently seeing in front of her.

Sara waited for a few minutes, impatiently.

Finally, a new message flashed on the screen, once again accompanied by that lovely voice.

-System detects error. Please be sure your body is seated, or lying down before initializing game play.-

Sara stared at the message for a while, reading it and re-reading it before cursing out loud.

"Damn it!"

Rather than take the helmet off once again, Sara decided to try to find her bed while still wearing the helmet.

This proved a more difficult process than what she'd originally thought. In her haste to get her suit and helmet on, while she was originally next to her bed, she'd somehow ended up in the center of her room. She'd never paid much attention to where her furniture was in her room, she was also unsure of exactly which direction she'd actually been facing when she had placed the VR set on.

Outstretching her hands, Sara began trying to search around for her bed through touch.

Usually, one cannot move around while wearing the VR gear without being kicked from the system, but because Sara had not actually finished the set up, she was able to find a sort of…loophole.

Not a loop hole that could really "aid" anyone in game play, more…a pointless loophole that most people didn't know about because most people knew to either take the helmet off before trying to move around, or to at least, after the helmet was already set up, to turn on the translucent mode, which enabled one to see out of the helmet.

Sara was not kicked from the system, though most people would not have seen much reason to still be wearing the helmet, as it was in fact not allowing them to do anything with the system.

Sara reached out blindly around her, hoping to find something that could allow her to figure out where she was.

The message was still active on her screen, not moving.

Sara, after stepping gingerly forward, was able to find her fingers brush lightly against her bed sheet.

A sinister sounding laugh filler her room.

"Hahahahaha, found you, you little bastard."

Sara, lost in her own world and fantasy, pictured what area she was grabbing on her bed, envisioning herself in her mind feeling the bed sheet. She rubbed a small section of the bed, but in her mind, her hands were stretching out much further on the bed. Due to this, Sara was not actually able to guage where she was truly touching and what end of her bed was in front of her.

Caught up in her own misgivings, Sara laughed once again and, in a fit of excitement, chose to turn and jump onto her bed from the side. In her mind, she pictured herself landing on her side, and laying flat directly after.

In actuality, Sara found herself missing her bed entirely and throwing herself onto the floor. Hard.

Oof.

The breath in Sara's lungs was knocked roughly out of her body.

Sara tried to catch her breath that escaped her…before groaning on the floor.

Shortly after, a woman's voice spoke next to her ear, though this time, Sara did not take as much comfort in it as before.

-System Calibrating…Please wait…System calibrating…System registering…Please wait…Welcome to the sign in. Congratulations on your purchase of Modem's VR system model Tinted 741! What should this system call you?-

"…Are you fucking kidding me…."

-I'm sorry, I didn't catch that, did you say "Aru Fuckid Me?"-

"No!"
