Capítulo 10: Days in the Past

It was 5 years ago when he first met Loraine. The days is still fresh in the mid of James as it happened yesterday. It was a small gathering of nobles. As the family of James is not high ranking noble, they barely got invited to events. And the ones that they get invited at are small celebrations of other mediocre nobles.
That was exactly the case that day. It was the birthday of the third daughter of the Bloom family. The Bloom family is close business partners to the Witterton family and therefore occasionally invited each other.
James would normally not attend these kinds of events, as he is more interested in improving his sword skills. However, he was forced by his parents to attend that event. This in order to maybe find a suited engagement for James to improve relationship between various families.
Loraine, who is a close friend of the third daughter of the Bloom family, naturally attended her best friend's birthday. That's how James, who normally disliked events such as these, started to get fond of them.
Loraine, the oldest daughter of the Goldon family, does have a rather strong family, at least more influential compared to the Witterdon's. Therefore, when James brought the subject of having a liking to Loraine, his parents were eager to purist such an endeavor as they might increase their influence with the help of the Goldon's.
That night, James found the courage to approach Loraine. He noticed occasionally, when looking at Loraine, that she was doing the same. Those moments were both awkward and humorous for both parties. After a few more of those moments, James walked stiffly towards Loraine and they got into a small but enjoyable conversation. Even the birthday host was ignored occasionally.
After that day, James visited other parties, where Loraine was invited to, just to get closer to her and get to know her better. These endeavors paid off, as Loraine indeed wanted to spend more time with James.
The following few years, they occasionally met and improved their relationship. Even both families were aware that these two youths had feelings for each other. When the time came to ask for Loraine's hand to from an engagement, the Goldon's started to oppose with various reasons.
There might have been other reasons, but the main things that the Goldon's wanted were difficult for the Witterdon's to achieve in one go. Furthermore, some of the requirements were specifically tasked towards James.
These tasks included bride money of 800 gold, this was 5 years profit for the Witterdon's. Moreover, James was required to become a knight and have a notable reputation. The money issue, even though costly, was accepted. As for becoming a knight and have a notable reputation, James became a knight soon after the requirements. Being accepted into the personal knights of Gerald showed that the reputation was also solved.
However, the last task the Goldon's expected from James was the most difficult to achieve. James was required to travel to The Holy City together with the knights of Gerald, and personally slay at least 20 demonic beasts.
Back in the city, this was equal to a death sentence, however now that he has faced them, James was confident that this is an easy task for him to achieve. He had already killed 5 of these things. 15 more to go and he will be a step closer to get the hand of the girl he loves, Loraine.

Having this in mind, James stood back up and prepared to leave again.
