Capítulo 49: The tournament begins

3d person POV:

After the prayer finished, the priest took the lantern containing the holy flames and started climbing down the stairs, all the people kowtowing stood up on their feets and started following behind the priest in a single line.

Arthur too joined the line and looked above but he couldn't find the 3 lords of this city on the second floor.

The priest soon came in front of the all too familiar bronze gate which was now guarded by 2 powerful golden realm cultivators who opened the gate and bowed down to the holy flames.

The line of people enter the alleyway where the road diverged into 2 directions.

"Yang." Feng li called out his name.

Arthur's POV:

I heard feng li calling my name so I turn around to face him whose expression was unusually serious.

"This is where our path diverge, Yang. "

Feng li said while pointing towards the right direction where some young people around his age were entering in smaller numbers.

"Take jiang li to a good seat in the arena. I have to go now as the participants will enter the alleyway in the right direction. "

"Good luck dear. " Jiang li wished him luck but feng li nodded slightly, he was nervous and I saw it in his face.

"Let's hope that this time you won't faint before the fight. " I smirked.

"I hope so." Feng li looked at me and replied with a slight chuckle.

"I hope so what? That you faint?! " I replied in fake exaggeration.

"Hahaha" Feng li laughed heartily at my antics.

"I hope that I atleast don't faint before the fight. " After laughing for a while, he replied to me with a smile.

After that he felt silent for a while, then he looked at Jiang li and reassured her with newfound confidence.

"I will surely win this!"

"Sure." I smiled and started walking towards the left alleyway along with Jiang li.

'His confidence has returned.' I thought.

"Hey Yang! " Feng li again suddenly called out my name and when I turn around, he was smiling at me.

"Thank you pal. " He innocently smiled at me, it was my first time ever since we met that I had seen such a expression on his stoic face.

"Anytime." I waved my hand as both of us walked in opposite directions.

....

Jiang li and I enter the seating area of the battle arena which was as hectic as the football stadiums in my previous life. Vips had their own lounge but sadly both of us weren't VIPs so we navigated our way through the crowd of people and sat on the best seats we could find just a few seconds before the fat man tried to hog it as his own.

The fat man regretfully looked at our seats and Jiang li being the angel she is, tried to get up because she was feeling guilty. I forcefully held her down and showed the fat dude the direction towards the next free seat which he sprinted towards while shouting a thank you to us.

We settle down on our seats and started making small talk when I called out to a young child who was selling refreshments and snacks on the arena.

"Here! " I shouted as the child came running towards me and brought up his tray right in front of my face. Jiang li and I selected a few snacks which total upto 2 copper coins. I reach down my pocket to pay for the snacks like the gentlemen I am when I realized that I am fcking broke and didn't had a wallet. I froze in place.

"I won't give it for free or for credit! " The child shouted sternly at my face which only doubled my shame.

[Rather embarrassing if I say so myself? ] the system only added fuel on my flame by providing it's unasked opinion.

"Here it is. " Jiang li opened her wallet and gave 2 copper coins to the child as Arthur remain frozen in silence.

"I am sorry master yang, I forgot that powerful cultivators like you don't have mortal currency and because of my fault, you had to face such an embarrassing situation" She apologized sincerely.

"It's alright. " I smiled and didn't try to think about this any further.

"Thanks for the snacks btw. " She cheerfully smiled which further confused me.

"What? " I asked.

"Don't try to act now yang! I know cultivators like you don't eat these mortal snacks so of course you were buying it for me right? " She asked cheerfully.

"Yeah... Right. " I wryly smiled.

"Thanks a lot! " She smiled and started eating the entire 2 packets on her own without giving me a single bite.

'Please someone tell her that I am not a cultivator but a ninja so of course I feel hungry. ' I silenced my growling stomach and focused on the arena.

3rd person's POV:

The arena was packed and the crowd were starting to settle down. There were a total of 100,000 people seated on the arena yet surprisingly only 1000 people were present on the annual meeting before so where did all these 99,000 people come from? The correct explanation is generally the simplest one, these people had already entered the ancient castle but were not invited on the annual meeting as only the select fews and the elite few of the li clan were allowed to participate so Arthur didn't saw them in the golden Pavillion.

The 3 VIPs were seating on a private lounge on their priceless thrones, filled with servants and butlers like a emperor.

The VIPs of the smaller stature were gifted a small sofa like construct along with a table and a single servant in the first row of the arena, the closest to the arena ground where the tournament will take place and of course, Huan li was seating on that seat.

A middle age man climb up on the tournament ground and announced.

"Respected guests and our 3 lords, Please give us the person to start this tournament" He shouted which caused the patriarch of the li clan to nod his head in agreement.

Upon getting the permission, the priest from the annual meeting along with the "idiot thief" Climbed up a staircase towering over the entire arena on top of which a giant altar of 20 meters in width and 10 meters in height was situated firmly. The lantern from before was brought in front of the altar where the brush guided the holy flames from the lantern towards the altar.

*Whoooooooosh*

The giant altar lit up in giant rainbow flames as the small rainbow flames from the lantern expanded to fit the altar as if size wasn't a concept to the holy flames.

The holy flames lit up the entirety of the arena as the middle age announcer shouted.

"The tournament begins! "

As the word echoed throughout the arena, the formation below the square battle arena lit up and created multiple transparent partitions which divided the battle arena into 100 smaller square sections like a mini battle arena.

[AN: For reference, the battle arena is thrice as big as a football ground (soccer if you are an American). ]

"The participants may enter the arena as allocated before! " The announcer announced as a plethora of people started walking towards the battle arena.

The participants knew which partition to enter beforehand and just after they enter their respected square sections, the partitions lit up and returned back to normal.

"Now you won't be able to leave your respective sections unless you defeat your opponent or the opponent surrenders.

let the elimination round begins! "

The announcer announced as now 200 people were inside the 100 square sections, 2 people inside each square section.

Arthur's POV:

"Are they all gonna fight at once? " I inquired looking at this strange arrangements, I mean I could see what is going on but Jiang li is a mortal along with thousands of people present here so how could they enjoy this tournament? I wondered.

[The formation present here allows even mortals to clearly see what is going on so no, you are not special as it not just you who can clearly see what is going on here. ] the system replied while silently mocking me but I ignored it as the information intrigued me.

'Maybe I should try learning this formation thing' I thought.

"There it is! " Jiang li shouted and rock my shoulders in excitement, "Feng li is facing that donkey looking fellow in the 56 section! " She shouted and frantically started shaking me as I tried my hardest to find this 56 section amongst the dizziness.

"I found it! " I shouted to calm her down and indeed... His opponent reminded me of...a donkey?

Feng li's POV:

My breathing became uneven as I enter the arena, afraid that I might lose after everything that I had done till now... Afraid to disappoint my clan back at home. The weight of my responsibility pressed me down harder then any of the attacks which my competitors might throw at me.

I was nervous.

My clan members hopeful faces who cheered me on for success.

My strict teacher who told me that losing wasn't an option.

My father words before I set out.

"The clan's glory as well as our hope resides on your shoulder my son.

I wasn't able to participate in this yet you are lucky enough to participate so early on... Unlike me.

Don't disappoint me son as you will know what will happen if you do so. "

My thoughts came crashing down on me as I could still feel the stern gaze of my father and my clan weighting me down when suddenly a beautiful voice freed me from my burden.

"Good luck dear. " The face of my fiance blocked every thought inside my head, her purple eyes and fairy like face gazing at me tenderly with worry.

"Don't faint before the fight" My friend yang kai's voice trying to insult yet encourage me.

"Don't worry, I will win for sure! " My promise rang on my ear as I felt the weight pressing on me vanishing, I felt free...and fearless.

...

The partition shine in front of me as the announcer's warning fell on my ear.

"The partition will only open when the winner is decided or one of the 2 participants had surrendered. "

'I ain't surrendering! ' I firmed myself as I watched my opponent for the first time, he was a 9 realm qi refining cultivator so I had an edge over him since I was 2nd level foundation establishment yet I reminded myself to not underestimate him. My opponent was a 6ft tall male whose face resembled that.... Of a donkey?

"I know I look funny but dont you dare underestimate me. " My opponent warned me like a true warrior upon seeing my shameful gaze.

"Of course, I don't discriminate my opponents based on looks. " I reassured him.

"A true warrior indeed" He replied as he cupped his fist in respect as I also return the courtesy by doing the same.

"My friend, even though you look like a donkey, you are a true warrior indeed. " I warmly praised him but his expression scrunched up in anger!?

"What did you just call me!? " He asked me furiously, his previous calmness completely vanished into thin air.

Realizing what I had done, I quickly made amends,

"You had heard me wrong my warrior friend, please don't lose your calm over this. " But my words were falling on deaf's ear as he wasn't responding.

"I said ass and not a donkey. " I tried to divert the topic like Arthur but failed catastrophically.

"Cease your pleasantries and let's talk through our fists. " He finally replied but his words were traced with hidden anger.

*haah* I sighed and readied my stance.

"Let the tournament begin! " The announcer finally announced the beginning of the tournament as just as his words fell, my donke-*cough* opponent jumped on me for a quick attack.

Feeling him quickly approaching me, I held my sword in front of me and radiated my qi over the sword for a stronger defence. His fist and my sword collided producing a powerful shockwave which churned the air inside the partition.

"Transformation arts: Donkey that travels the moon" My opponent shouted as powerful qi started swarming around him.

I quickly jumped out of there and readied my sword as I watched my opponent with shock.

"A transformation art! "

3rd person's POV:

In the seat above the arena ground, Arthur was intently watching the fight happen when suddenly he noticed the unusual qi around feng li's opponent.

"System, what's that? " Arthur asked

[A transformation art which turns it's user into a mythical beast, the duration of the transformation depending on the user's qi reserve.

It is a super rare technique which is guarded heavily inside a clan becoming the clan's heirloom based on the power of the transformation technique. ] the system explained.

Inside the VIP lounge,

"Hoho, this is really interesting. I didn't thought that I will be seeing a transformation technique so early in this competition. " The city lord chuckled.

"To be able to learn this in his age, he truly is a genius worth nurturing and he very might win against that 2nd level foundation establishment realm kid. " The head elder shared his thoughts.

"We shall see." The patriarch replied with a smile.

...

Feng li's POV:

'A transformation technique! I might have kicked an iron wall this time. ' I rethink my mistake after seeing the giant 12 feet silver donkey towering above me.

The donke- my opponent lift up its hoove trying to tramble me in his next step.

'Li clan's thunder arts: lightning sword' I quickly performed my technique as lightning starting forming on my sword.

*Bang* the donkey's hoove landed above me but I manage to evade it in time as the donkey kick the ground which caused the ground to explode into multiple chunks of earth .

"What power! " I marvelled as I readied my stance.

"Li clan footwork: feather walk" I jumped on a chunk of earth which was still falling in the air and using it as a foothold, I jumped to the nearest falling chunk of earth and like that, jumping from falling chunk to chunk thanks to my feather walk, I quickly approached the donkey and swung my lightning sword at him.

*Clang! * my sword and the donkey's hove covered in powerful qi collided creating such immense pressure that the partition was activated and started absorbing the shockwaves.

"Calm down donkey" I tried to calm him down and failed catastrophically again.

"You bastard! " The donkey shouted and hit his hooves on the ground.

Multiple stakes made of earth sprung up from the ground, towering 7 meters high.

The donkey kept on hitting the ground and the spikes kept on emerging like a torrent of river, rendering me in a defensive position.

I tried my best to dodge those spikes which suddenly sprung up but as more spike spring up from the ground, I started getting accustomed to it and started to easily dodged it as I noticed a pattern, the ground shook violently below which the spike was about to spring up so I had just had to dodge the place where the ground was shaking.

Slowly and steadily, I was moving closer to the donkey while dodging the spikes and as I was just 4 meters away from the donkey, I jumped up while dodging a tall earthen spike which sprung up from the ground and inserted huge amount of qi into my sword while swinging it back to charge up my momentum.

As the blade touched my back, explosive thunder qi exploded from my blade and using my entire body's momentum along with the thrust of the thunder, I swung my blade at my opponent and he responded by swinging his hoove at me.

*bang*

Our attacks collided as the air inside the partition churned up into a cyclone. Stuck in a stalemate for a few second, amongst the vicious shockwaves of our collision, I released my lightning qi from my sword which merge together forming a bigger lightning as it flew towards the donkey in a streak of blue. The attack was too fast for the donkey to react as the lightning hit him and rendered him immobile.

The immobile donkey unable to no longer parry me, faced the full force of my previous attack right in his stomach.

*zzzzzzz*

*Clack*

The thunder and lightning wrapped in my sword unleashed its wrath on my donkey opponent who was thrown 10s of meters away from the collision point.

*bang*

He came crashing down upon the ground like a meteor as the dust cloud came in with the occasional streaks of blue lightning.

I focused my gaze towards the lightning and as the lightning illuminated the face of my opponent, I could see that he was no longer in his giant donkey form but in the form of a human.

"Feather walk" I vanished from my position.

3rd person's POV:

The area section 56 was covered in dust and debris as it renders other enable to see what was going on, not that it matters since the crowd was focused in a different fight.

The raccoon like young master was toying with his opponent and insulting his techniques which the crowd took keen interest in. Whether a cultivator or a mortal, Vicious human nature can still be seen in their eyes.

"That grandson of treasurer Jin is quite vicious don't you think so patriarch" The city Lord commented.

"Indeed.I will talk to his grandfather after this. " The patriarch responded with slight embarrassment

"Looks like the battle over there is reaching its end now. " The head elder commented as both the city Lord and the patriarch eyes were drawn into the area section 56.

.....

As the dust started settling down, feng li's opponent could be seen violently coughing while holding his stomach.

"Damn it! " He spoke with frustration as he conjure a sword from the ground below. He then set his gaze upon the position of feng li but to his horror , feng li was nowhere to be found.

"Over here friend. " a cold blade touched his back as a shiver ran down his spine.

"When did you... " He slowly turned around and saw the cold eyes of feng li staring at him. He broke out in a cold sweat as he slowly started shuddering, his breathing uneven when suddenly feng li lift up his blade in an attacking stance which caused him to close his eyes in fright.

One second..... Two seconds... Three seconds ...

Feeling nothing had happened to him even after all this time, he build up his courage to open his eyes and what greeted him greatly confused him.

Feng li was just standing there with his hands cupped in a fist as he half bowed towards him.

"I am dearly sorry for my previous words my friend, my intentions weren't to hurt your feelings.

Please forgive me. " Feng li bowed in front of him.

Silence returned in the battlefield as after a while, the donkey looking fellow got up on his feet and shouted.

"I surrender! "

Upon hearing his words, the partition loosen up, creating a small door size hole through which the fellow got out.

As he was getting out of the arena, he halted in his steps and looked at feng li.

"You don't have to worry, I accept your apology and btw, my name is not donkey. It's Mumu. "

He laughed heartily and went out of the arena, lost yet not defeated.

The patriarch pleasantly smile upon seeing this.

"Both of them are a remarkable young man." The head elder commented.

"Looks like the future of the li clan is in good hands. " The city Lord praised.

"Wuhooo! " An erratic shout echoed throughout the first row of the battle arena as uncle meng was shouting in the vip section.

"That's my nephew, a hero amongst men! "

But of course, the others were not as happy especially his seat neighbour in whose ear he was shouting.

"He did it! " On the other hand, jiang li was continuously shaking Arthur up like a ragdoll.

After about 10 minutes, all the battle inside the 100 section came to an end as 100 victors emerges. Then something amazing happened as one side of the partition opened up merging with the neighboring partition and creating an even bigger battle arena. The 100 smaller sections were now divided into 50 bigger sections with the 100 victors again facing each other in a 1v1.

"Let the 2nd round begins! " The announcer shouted.
