Well, Leafeon was not found out even though it's evolution is just like flareon and vaporeon with a leaf stone. I would add something to make it believable though. Anime logic sucks

Too many Pokemon are difficult to write and it is not possible in reference to the story. you have to feed them different food, care for them differently, train them differently which is not possible. i can only promise you that he would have a good number of Pokemon by his side
The protagonist is Gladion only. Gwen would be playing a big role in the story but not as big as Gladion
