I agree with those that say he should learn the shadow ability, and the reason is: 1. The ability may have a sneak skill that he may learn. 2. What does he plan to tell the military when they question him on how he survived and killed beasts in the red zone BY HIMSELF. For this point he may say he was saved by a group but they died, which would raise suspicion. Learning the shadow ability could give him a reason as how he survived and the suspicion would lessen. Not to mention that they would forgive him for raiding the base and learning the ability, so they'll in a sense give it to him, free of charge, as an apology and due to the emergency. It would also provide cover for his vampire system, and they might not ask too many questions if he wonders around with items to block him from the sun. With that in mind, he could give them a simple excuse that his shadow ability is stronger in the dark.
