I assume "decayed wood officials" is a cultural/linguistic translation for "rotten officials". If so, I somewhat like this as it's a bit more expressive.

But the key is NOT the first. The sin of solace produced the wraith without being summoned. Though it may be argued that the wraith is just an artifact of the maddening affects of the sword and not actually produced by the sword itself. However you can say the same about the key. They both affect the mind. Also, the sword is what fuels the hallucination. If the sword was to be destroyed, the wraith would likely soon follow, if not immediately.
And, on top of that, that Memory was the first one Sunny had ever seen that functioned even without being summoned. Its passive enchantment was in effect despite the Estuary Key resting within his soul, both silencing the sword wraith and preventing time from influencing the jagged piece of black rock.

That said, he wouldn't want to live while always wearing Weaver's Mask. Lies might be liberating, but he did not think that a person who only deceived could be a part of a community… at least not in any kind of meaningful way.
