yeah. Shinji was originally just a kid that was showed an entire world of wonder only to be denied thoroughly when he want to be part of it. His family condition doesnt help when his family members doesnt treat him like family. Kid shinji probably assumed its all due to magecraft and his inability is the main reason why his family alienated him. Sakura shows up and seemingly taking the attention of his family. Even if he knows how fcked up the attention is he is envious/jealous of it so he hates sakura and abused her badly. Well, probably seeing the extreme/terrible treatment from his grandpa kinda desensitize him to fcked up shit. For him r4ping and stuff while abhorrent is probably not that bad in his mind.
PS: This isn't about glorifying the original Shinji. Shinji's pursuit of magecraft was indeed sincere. He had been searching for books and recording magecraft he couldn't use since childhood, although the initial reason was that he considered himself special and superior.
