Kapitel 19: Relocation

"Brigadier General von Valkov, I presume. It is a pleasure to meet you. Yuri Nikolaevich Romany, at your service." Yuri saluted together with Tanya at his side after putting away his cup of coffee on the table.

"Tanya Degurechaff, a pleasure to meet you." Tanya also told her name.

The general and his adjutant nodded in response.

"You know of me? That is a surprise. Good that I find the two officers I was searching for so quickly.", mentioned Valkov with a rather pleased smile while looking the two cadets up with somewhat of a surprised look. "But I had imagined you to be a little bit older...Talent sure knows no bounds." He added while caressing his brown beard in a thoughtful manner.

"I hear that a lot.", responded Yuri and had even thought the same at the girl next to him. "But we are only low cadets. Are you perhaps not mistaken? Who do we owe the honor of having such visitors?", asked Yuri right after.

He had already guessed them to be here for awards, which he would gladly receive as long as he gets more power through them. But he didn't think they would straight up be promoted. That made him curious about why he addressed them as officers.

The general laughed lightly. "Straight to the point, huh? I like it. You are going to receive your Iron Crosses. It is a little something for your effort of rescuing your fellow soldiers. You did a very nice job in the field keeping everyone alive."

The general took out two little cases and handed them over to Yuri and Tanya.

When Yuri opened it he could see a 2nd class Iron Cross of honor together with its ribbon and small iron bar.

It was the iconic black cross with a silver frame around it. The date stamped on the backside was showing the current year. There was even his name stamped, what surprised Yuri. And there was of course the certificate with it to keep it authentic. Bureucratics...

The ribbon holding it had the same color scheme. If it had red small stripes along the white ones, it would have been a first class cross - a tier higher. The metal would also be gold instead of silver. Still, a nice gift.

Closing the small casket he put it away and then saw the general take out something else. It was an envelope with a letter inside.

"And here is the other thing. Intelligence Bureau and I had decided to let you both try yourself in advancing your career. We could use such promising seedlings as officers. So we recommend you for the war college. You can include that to your next reports."

War college was the equivalent of a university that could open up a lot of doors for a soldier. Even reaching the rank of general would then be a possibility. Or depending on your preferences even becoming a military doctor and the likes.

It had a very good reputation and after retiring from active duty at some age where the body could not keep up anymore it was god enough to land good jobs in civil places.

Tanya especially was brightening up when receiving that letter. There was a clear sile on her face that the others and Yuri included could see.

It made Yuri smile wryly at seeing that young girl fawning over such a possibility. Then again, she did tell him she came from an orphanage.

"I guess we will see how the General Staff will decide about it." Yuri was feeling rather bad to pop the bubble since it was not yet decided if they would really go there.

Even Tanya knew that and her stoic face reappeared after hearing Yuri's words.

Valkov could only sigh lightly. "That is true. But it should go through pretty easily. Anyway, now that we are through with this I would ask about your status. How are you feeling?"

"Pretty good, sir!", answered Tanya as if shot out of a gun.

That let Yuri raise a brow. "For what occasion? The men are still mentally stressed and exhausted from their actual real combat experience. So we have to take that into consideration." He answered truthfully and Tanya eyed him as if to question his response.

The general looked at Yuri. "Good, let your men rest up for the time, and then prepare to be relocated. Your batch of recruits is being sent south for deployment exercises at the rhine."

"Understood, sir" Yuri was rather surprised to be relocated.

"Cadet Degurechaff, you are going to go through the aerial mage deployment training here at the north. So you are going to stay here and can start right the next day with training on how to use aerial mage equipment."

"Yes, sir!" Tanya did only comply but from her face, Yuri could tell she was actually not happy. He had to wonder if it was the cold that bothered her or something else?

"I got a question, general.", mentioned Yuri now.

"Ask away.", replied Valkov.

"I seem to have been put under infantry regiments until now and didn't bother asking at first. But does the general staff not know that I applied to aerial mage training as well? Should I not be staying here for the training?" Yuri had kinda wondered about that for a while now.

None of his superiors seemed to even mention his later training for that occupation.

"Hmm? You are a mage?" Valkov looked to his adjutant and the person also looked over some documents in his hand, showing it to the general while shaking the head. "Seems like your documents had no information on your magical aptitude test...Well, I am not going to say I don't believe you but maybe you should reapply for another test."

"I see...I will do so ASAP the moment I get the chance." Yuri was rather shocked by that response. How in the world did his aptitude test get lost?

"Don't worry too much about it. The south also has some aerial mage deployment exercises ongoing. They will probably want to greet you with open arms. Hell, even I would love to keep you now."

Yuri and Tanya both realized that this general was very bold. He actually tried to keep all available mages in training to himself. No wonder Tanya had to stay while he could leave.

"I am flattered. If something comes up I would gladly work under you, general." Yuri still kept up his ass-kissing. He hated it but he could not just shout out how greedy that action was. Did he luck out now by being forgotten? Who knows.

The general nodded. "Now then, I hope you both keep up your good work. Let us meet again on celebratory events, shall we?" Valkov looked at all the cadets nearby.

Tanya nodded. "Of course, general!"

When the two guys left Yuri sighed out. "So you will have your work cut out for you, huh? Looks like our paths will part right after crossing each other. Let's really hope that we can meet under the same circumstances, alright?"

"Under some heavy suppression fire?", Tanya raised her brow and scoffed lightly.

Yuri chuckled. "Yeah, maybe not under that circumstance. I mean celebrating something good would be more preferable." He even stretched out a friendly hand to her.

Tanya looked at him and took the hand, albeit hesitantly at first, and shook it. "Sure. Now we should get our drunk men back so they can perform at least somewhat decently." She looked over at the scene.

Yuri seeing it as well could only agree to it. The information about redeployment will hit hard for some of them.
