Kapitel 15: (Optional) Damage Calculations For Nerds

(This isn't a chapter, but I wrote it so take this free piece of content and be happy with it. There is an actual chapter published right after this.)

For the nerds who want to know a bit more about the damage calculations in Yggdrasil and their relations to health. I created this system so it is bound to have damn plot holes but I did my best okay?

Let's have a mock battle between Jimmy the mage and Sue the Knight

Fibonacci Counter for x modifier for Reference: [0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21]

F = [0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21] it shall be referenced as a 0 based index system.

The formula for spell and technique energy cost: Rank X + F[X]

Sue Knight attacks Jimmy Mage with a Rank 1 Technique (Techniques have ranks, Magic has Tiers)

Let us say she uses the Rank 1 Technique: [Qi Strike]. It takes 1 to use it since it is a Rank 1 Technique plus the additional cost which we find in the table for the Fibonacci counter. You got to index [1] of the table and find that the additional cost is 0. So the total cost is 1 + 0. It costs 1 Qi to activate so her Qi Points decrease by 1.

Let's also say Jimmy Mage gets hit with the Qi Strike. It does Physical damage so we will make the comparison to see how much damage he would take. And we will have Sue not use any special weapons that modify damage.

Weapons increase your general modifier. The better your weapon, the less your mod brings you down. And techniques can raise it as well. The default modifier is 0.25 with Iron weapons.

Phy Atk(68) + Technique Rank(1) * Technique Mod(0.6)= 41 Atk

Phy Def(38) + 0 = 38 Def

41 - 38 Def = 3 Damage

34 HP (Jimmy Mage)

- 3 Damage

This is a good example of damage calculation and the importance of raw stats. But techniques are also needed as they enable wider things than just some mechanical damage system. Let's see another one where the mod is really bad, but the range is easier to hit the target

She uses a new attack that fires a wave of Qi with her sword slash: Rank 3 Technique (Qi Wave)

Energy Cost: 3 + 2 = 5 QP

Phy Atk(68) + Technique Rank(3) * Technique Mod(0.3)= 21 Atk

Phy Def(38) + 0 = 38 Def

21 - 38 Def = 1 Damage (Minimum of 1)

34 HP (Jimmy Mage)

She didn't do much damage, but she can get him with its wide range. Or if she uses some special skill or item that lowers his defense she could kill him easily.

In this way, this was how Treech killed off everyone in the city who were all around level 30-40.

Treech used the 10th Tier spell [Comet Impact] so first let's calculate the mana cost of this bad boy.

Tier (10) + F[10] (21) = 31 MP to cast this monster spell and he gets no discounts as he does with Druid spells. He pays half the MP with his racial talent [Green Mana] for druid spells.

But wait there's more! He cast Twin magic. That means he cast it a second time immediately after so his total cost was 47 MP. For a double spell of disaster, the second one with half the power I believe.

So the total damage calculations now hehe:

Mag Atk (68) + Tier (10) + * Spell Mod(0.9) = 70 + 35(second comet) = 105

Average Joe Mag Def (30?) + 5 = 35

105 Ice Mag Dmg in AOE radius of 20 miles

- 35 Mag Def Avg

70 HP of damage

AVG HP 35-55.

All of the people died.

Okay well, I designed the damn system for spells and techniques now I hope you guys are happy with it. Help me tweak it if needed or if I missed something.

Also, this system shows just how OP penetration items and attacks are that ignore defense would be. And many attacks on a target are more effective if you keep hitting 1s. This is probably why the High Tier Physical Nullification Ability was so important.
