Kapitel 34: BROKEN CROWN II

Makima was soon crying blood. On all fours, Makima wailed as her mind tore itself apart.

"Makima!"

Deven cried as she hovered cluelessly over her crying friend. She had no idea what was happening and even less how to help.

She and Makima were discussing only minutes ago now for whatever reason she lay on the ground with her hands strongly holding onto her head.

While Deven yelled for help Makima slowly fell on her back with her eyes closed and her cries no more than echoes that bounced off the Walls.

Seeing her friend lying flat on the cold floor Deven couldn't help but panic. She rushed to her side and confirmed that she was still alive. Luckily she was.

Before she could even figure out what next to do, she heard something move behind her.

When she turned she could see the figure of the grotesque infant churn. Its white tendrils that latched onto every corner of the base rattled slightly.

As the infant hung in the air, Deven witnessed its body inflate like it was being filled with air. Its pale skin starched as its belly, and head swole. Its eyes were now far to the side of its head and still stretching with its nose almost touching the glowing red obsidian orb that hovered above it.

Before she could even process what could be happening to her sister Deven soon heard the soft tapping of heels on the metal flooring.

With it came a sudden pulse of energy that rattled the entire base.

When Deven turned she could see the Nurse walking gently towards them with blood smeared across one hand and a strange dagger held loosely in the other.

The nurse's enthralling but cold eyes fell on Deven first then on Makima. With her head titled to the side the nurse asked;

"Done already?"

Her eyes were placed solely on Makima when she spoke with a slight smile lining her lips.

"Step away."

She said again. This time Deven could tell the nurse was speaking to her, but she had no intentions of listening.

It was obvious what she wanted to do. Now that Makima was down it was the perfect moment to gut her.

Deven immediately stepped between the two, glaring at the nurse with scrutiny and judgmental eyes.

"What? Low effort, low risk. Fuck honor I see a kill I take it."

The nurse said taking a step closer before coming to a halt, with her arms raised.

"Not another step."

Deven ordered as she raised her bow and arrow aiming right at the nurse.

"Come on Deven. Don't make me have to do this."

The nurse said with her hands raised and bloody. Despite her obvious threat, Deven wasn't budging. Her eyes were just as cold as the nurse's, still and determined.

"Listen. Killing you isn't in my best interest. In fact, I'll be honest I was told precisely not to."

The nurse said her eyes rising to meet the inflated body of the grotesque infant, holding some unreadable expression– The truest emotion Deven had seen the cynical nurse display since they met. When those eyes fell back on Deven though, they were cold and severe.

"But make no mistake. I can and I will hurt you in some of the worst ways imaginable. If you don't step away from her."

Deven felt those words like a chill running up her spine. They were brutal… but true.

Yet she didn't waver. Her hands still tighten on the grip of her bow. Seeing this the nurse couldn't help but let out a tired sigh.

"…Think about Diane… your sister. Just a few more moments…"

The nurse said again as she gazed at the inflated infant. Deven turned too, raising her head to see her sister.

Her eyes were wet with tears. She couldn't let them fall though, before they did she turned whipping her head to the side, right as the nurse was about to make her move.

Deven let her fingers loose and like a blur, her wooden arrow cut through the air ricocheting off the metal flooring to meet the nurse's right eye.

"Fuck!"

She yelled as she stopped to pull the arrow out. Before she could however more arrows came at her. She evaded the first but the other met her heel with roots that clung to her thin legs.

Another came with chains and the last landed right before her, seemingly harmless till out of it came a green mist.

With a cautious gaze, the nurse raised her nose and took a whiff of the air.

"…Fuc–"

Boom!

Right then a small explosion occurred, right in front of the nurse. When the flames died out Deven was nowhere to be found and so was Makima.

"Damn it."

The nurse cursed as she pulled off the chain and arrows that stuck to her charred flesh.

The wounds were already healing when she stepped out of the dying flames. With a bland expression, she turned and flavours at the still-inflating infant that hovered at the centre of the room then mumbled something inaudible.

The next moment she rushed out of the room chasing after Deven and the unconscious Makima.

Her heels echoed throughout the metal tunnel as she ran. If she listened closely she could also hear Devens far off in the distance.

She had used most of her strength to heal up and was still fairly exhausted after what she had done before entering the unconscious Makima.

Currently, she wasn't capable of running at her best. But still, the girl couldn't be fast enough to be able to maintain such a distance.

Deven was just as handicapped as she was, with Makima slowing her down.

"How strong is this girl."

She cursed.

Soon the figures of the frozen abominations were all around her. The nurse didn't even flinch at the sight of them. Even their intense presence wasn't enough to stall her. The same could be said for Deven.

She could hear the nurse hot on their trail, maybe she was growing closer maybe not. She couldn't tell, but all she could do was keep running.

Soon she was out the other end of the tunnel and was now running on snow.

From behind the nurse could see the girls as the stark light at the end of the tunnel drew her their silhouettes.

She was already stepping out of the tunnel when a massive crab-like appendage landed before her.

When she turned she could see a massive abomination with black chitin and the body of a mantis and some other horrific creature.

Its head was turned to the side with its stark white eyes gazing at Deven and Makima as they fled.

"What are you waiting for?! Go after them!"

She ordered. The abomination only turned to face her in response. Its inhuman eyes tell a soft rebellion at her orders.

The nurse alternated her gaze between the abomination and the fleeing girls with a baffled expression. Then with a sigh, she dropped her arms and said;

"Whatever."

Right as she was about to head back to the base, the abominations wiggled its massive head and when it stopped its white eyes were now dull and beady. The nurse stared up at it with wide eyes as all four of those eyes were now placed solely on her.

"Fuck."

She cursed as the thing sent its large appendages falling towards her. Its mouth pincers spread open for a guttural inhumane shriek.
