______________________________________________________________________

It was another day of me having stupidity decided to enlist in the US Marine Corps shortly after 9/11. I was immediately brought into the Middle East to fight the 'War on Terror'. However, I luckily was able to finish school and become an officer, unfortunately, my bumbass decided to rejoin as part of the Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). I then became a squad lead as a Captain, which made me the one to make the 'important' decisions of the group when in certain situations.

"Cap, are we gonna see any action today?" one of my squad members asks me as we are patrolling the outskirts of the city where our base is stationed nearby. Today was another extremely hot and dry day, making everyone annoyed as usual especially since we had to carry our packs with us.

"Jesus, this fuckin guy! Dude, I'd rather not get my ass fuckin shot by an Arab!" another of my soldiers says responding with a very annoyed voice.

"Here I thought joining the SOC would get me less 'special' squad mates," my Sergeant says looking at the soldiers arguing with one another out of boredom.

"Once a crayon eater, always a crayon eater," I say seeing them almost fist fight causing my Sergeant to have to step in.

Before anyone else could do anything, a shot was heard then one of my soldiers fell to the ground crying in pain while he began bleeding out from his chest. Everyone then immediately reacted grabbing their guns and looking around as my medic ran over to our fallen brother.

"Ten O'clock!" my Sergeant shouts and begins firing at the several men who come running out from an alley and shooting at us.

All hell breaks lose, as my radio operator begins calling back to Command to inform them of the firefight and asking for reinforcements. While my soldiers begin taking cover by some buildings and returning fire. I run over to my fallen soldier helping the medic pull him out of the street.

As I grab my fallen man with my medic helping me pull him away, we hear the clinking of a grenade falling near us. The medic and I shared a quick look as the grenade fell right next to us. My instinct kicked in and I jumped on the grenade keeping it from killing several of my men and instead just taking me out. The next thing I heard was my medic yell in panic and then a quick jolt of pain before nothing.

Opening my eyes, I noticed several things very wrong. First I was definitely not in the middle east as I was currently surrounded by a forest of trees in all directions. Plus it was a very comfortable temperature, almost perfect seventy degrees with little wind going by. Then my senses quickly became overwhelmed as I could smell everything around me and hear what sounded like deer nowhere near my eyesight.

'What the fuck is going on!!' I think trying to calm down and control my senses which came back to me to know how to subdue them.

Just as my instinct came back to subdue them, so too did some memories flood my mind. I grabbed my head in pain as another life's worth of memories flooded my mind. After a few more moments my head returned to normal and I began sorting through the new memories.

'No fucking way,' I think as my possible new life came to me.

Looking at my hands on instinct I call out my blades, coming out from them are three steel-sharpened long knives. Using my other hand I run my finger across the blades, I can feel this is very real. Plus running it along the sharpened edge cut down to my bone which I noticed was the same steel-like metal before immediately healing shut. Then I withdrew my blades back into my hand as I sat there coming to terms with my situation.

Firstly, it seems I possibly died or am having a coma dream and became The Wolverine. Secondly, it appears I was somehow born with metal bones and claws because in this life I always had them. Thirdly, I'm not even that old, as this life was headed to the nearby city in the Kansas territory to join the Union as the US Civil War just started.

'Seems I ran from home all the way from Canada…' I think knowing I still had my mother in Canada, as I ran from home as a young child after accidentally killing my father with my claws. Though I don't have any siblings I know of.

"What the fuck do I do now… is this even real…" I say out loud to myself still not believing I'm in a new life one that might bring me to the Marvel Universe.

"I only read a few comics and I'm pretty sure Wolverine isn't even that strong… I'm fucked, aren't I?... Though at least I'm biologically immortal… I think," I say out loud again almost trying to convince myself this isn't real.

As I'm trying not to freak out I hear a grunt and a large-sounding creature walking over to me. Looking over I see a huge brown bear walking a few dozen feet by me, it looks over to me grunting to me. I can almost understand that it was greeting me before it marked its territory and moved on.

"Ok… I guess," I say as the huge predator moves on.

"Fuck it," I slaying my face and standing up, now I can feel the weight of my body.

"Shit dude," I say feeling like I weigh Five Hundred pounds, as I'm as tall as Hugh Jackman from my past life (6ft 3inch or 190.5cm).

Plus it seems I am extremely strong like I could rip this tree out of the ground strong. Curiosity takes control of me as I walk over to the nearby Pine Tree roughly 50ft (15m) tall and 1ft (30cm) in diameter. I then wrap my arms around it and begin to pull, I start to strain myself and with an animalistic growl, I rip the tree from the ground. I then stumble a bit catching myself while holding the tree, then I toss it making it land a few feet from me.

"Holy shit! If this isn't a coma dream, then this is fucking awesome!" I shout in excitement seeing just what the hell I am capable of.

'Now the real question is, is my metal Adamantium,' I think while walking to the city while pulling my claws out and back in getting a feel for them.

As I make my way in the city, a few people look my way and it seems I stand out. I can only assume it is because my hair and beard are caveman-like due to living in the wilderness. Plus my clothes appear to be ragged and dirty showing my wilderness lifestyle. While everyone else was wearing fancy suits and women these fancy dresses. I then make my way to the volunteer line to join the Union's forces.

'Once I crayon eater, always a crayon eater,' I think as I wait in line to rejoin the US military.

"Looking to join?" the man wearing a fancy uniform asks me as I walk over to his table.

"Yes," I say nodding my head as he starts to bring out some papers.

"Please sign your name here and then follow Sergeant Williams," the man says as I look at the papers he hands me. Which states under oath that I, will join the Union Army to help bring peace and equality back to The United States of America.

I hesitate for a second thinking about what name to use, then I realize my old life is over and I should just use my new name. Plus now that I am the Wolverine, I might as well lean into the role. So I signed my new name, James Howlett though my writing is not that fancy compared to the letter I just signed. However, the man doesn't seem to care as I walk over to the red-headed Irish-looking man who is Sergeant Williams.

"Come on," Sergeant Williams says ushering me to follow him.

"Maybe seeing you sign up will make the other cowards sign up now," Sergeant Williams says with some annoyance in his voice since no one in the city seems to have signed up.

"We'll get you outfitted and then you will join the other few recruits before we ship you off to where you are needed… I assume you know how to use a rifle?" Sergeant Williams says almost assuming because of my appearance I know my way around weapons.

"I know how to use Carbines, not muskets though," I say nodding my head since carbines were still popular in my past life for collects, along with muskets, but I never used a musket before.

"Good, though we'll show you on the way about muskets. As we will be marching for a long while," Sergeant Williams says as we arrive at the army tailor who begins measuring me.

After a few days, I leave with my new company of soldiers. During that time I got several uniforms, learned how to use a musket, and showed off my skills with a carbine. I quickly became one of the few sharpshooters in the company. I also got to see my appearance with one of the rare mirrors the tailor had and I look just like a young Hugh Jackman from my past life.

Unlike in my past life, only a few people had horses and they were the officers. While everyone else walked so marching around was the only way to get from place to place. So we spent weeks marching to where we were needed, the border between Missouri and Arkansas.

Once we arrived in the large Union Fort, I relaxed passing the time with my fellow soldiers while the officers decided where we'd be going next. Finally, they decided to send us to the front lines, many men had conflicting feelings. Some were excited to finally get to see some action, while others looked scared to their core.

We began marching to the front lines and there our scouts saw a company of confederates marching a few miles from us. Our officers then began relaying orders to us to prepare for the battle to come in less than an hour. Many men ran around quickly setting up the cannons and gear around the soon-to-be battlefield.

I along with the other men who were considered sharpshooters, were told to station nearby the woods and pick off the Confederates as we saw fit. Sergeant Williams was in charge of our group as we quickly found a place nearby and then hid in waiting. The air was extremely tense as everyone was waiting for the Confederates to appear. No one spoke a word, even though I was now especially immortal, even I felt the stress reaching me as I never liked killing but did it anyway out of necessity.

Breaking the silence was three things first the sound of cannons being fired, then men screaming in pain and finally the sounds of the trumpets playing. Then we saw the Confederate army quickly setting up their formations. With our men opening fire and the cannons going off again. While the Confederates quickly set up their cannons and fired back.

"Fire at will!" Sergeant Williams says hearing the sound of the Confederate Army to charge with ours quickly following after them.

The battle was nothing like I was used to, it was a blood bath with dozens of men dying on either side. Men were shot down by bullets, exploded by cannon balls, stabbed by bayonets, and trampled to death after falling down. This was an absolute hellscape and if not for seeing death before I would have frozen up, this scale of massacre was not something I was used to.

"God help us," I hear one of the men beside me say as he froze up seeing the absolute massacre.
