He Kui's brief encounter with the Martian princess ended quickly. After immersing himself in work at home for two days, he finally devised a plan to enhance his safety.
"What's kept you so busy lately? You've been missing from the office," Shi He gently inquired as she finished tidying up after dinner.
"I've been working on this," He Kui replied, his excitement evident as he handed her his design sketch.
"Personal armored layer compression technology?"
"Yes, using foldable tech to compress the armor into a Haro-sized unit, tripling the density and offering over twenty times the durability of a regular shield."
Though compression did reduce the layered armor's overall strength, it was still resilient enough to withstand five or six rocket blasts without faltering. This was the new strategy he'd conceived on the way back.
With this shield in place, his security in Gibraltar would be considerably reinforced.
"Your technical skills have definitely advanced," Shi He observed, noting the complexity of the rough sketch. Even she, an A-rank herself, would struggle to create something so intricate.
"Alongside this, with Round Owl and Mirage Particle Haros, we can surround ourselves in an almost impenetrable defense," He Kui boasted to Shi He, a hint of pride in his voice.
They'd have stealth through Mirage Particles, defense through layered armor, offense with the Scream Eagle, and surveillance from the Round Owl. And with his integrated support system to coordinate them, even against elite forces, He Kui was confident he could escape unscathed.
This setup would serve as his foundation, a safeguard against The Clan or Clotho, and possibly leverage their influence in his favor.
The future, after all, was for him to secure.
"Heading to Earth might still be dangerous. Do you want to stay in PLANT?" Despite his preparations, He Kui voiced his concern.
"Why would you say that? Of course, I'm going with you!" Shi He held his hand tightly.
Though she didn't know the exact dangers, it was clear that He Kui had been pushing himself hard, with barely any rest. Regardless of the risks, she had no intention of staying behind. Even if he hadn't created the shield, she would still be by his side.
"You'll keep me safe, won't you?"
"Of course, Shi He," He Kui reassured her with a smile, then bade her goodnight and retreated to his room. His preparations were far from over.
With the design complete, the next step was manufacturing. In the interim, the following day, he visited Su Lei's residence to establish contact with Lacus.
"They're almost identical…" If he hadn't known otherwise, he might have suspected the Martian princess and Lacus were twins.
"Is something wrong? Did you need something from me?" Lacus asked, puzzled as she noticed He Kui's complex expression. Her gentle pink hair rested on her shoulders, giving her a serene, refined air.
"Miss Lacus, do you know anything about Clotho?"
"Why do you ask about Clotho?" Her expression turned serious.
"I can't seem to find any records of his past."
"According to him, he's a Coordinator who fled Earth. The officers who brought him here can vouch for him."
"Yes, but isn't it strange? By that era, Clotho would be a first-gen Coordinator, yet his abilities surpass many second-gens."
"That does seem odd…"
"We've looked into these concerns. He couldn't possibly be a spy."
Lacus understood his implication immediately.
"In many previous incidents, Clotho has airtight alibis. Suspicious though he may be, he's officially clear of wrongdoing."
"I understand." He Kui sighed. He had hoped to uncover some evidence through Lacus, but it was yet another dead end.
If Clotho had accessed the operation plans, he could have already acted on them. With his upcoming Earth mission, Lacus's awareness might add a layer of caution regarding Clotho, increasing the chances of intercepting any leaks.
Then, an idea struck him—a genetic trace.
"Well, I guess that's it."
"Wait—" Lacus began, but He Kui had already ended the call.
She looked at the screen, her lips parted slightly, and sighed. She had wanted to understand why he suspected Clotho. But, admittedly, Clotho was suspicious: rumors circulated that anyone who saw his true face didn't live to tell, and he always operated alone. She wondered how Patrick viewed the situation.
Leaving Su Lei's house, He Kui threw himself fully into his project on personal defense tech. Another week flew by in preparation, and the day of departure finally arrived.
Taking five Owls and five Eagles along with a set of Haros and his enhanced Aegis, and bolstered by his newly refined B-rank physique, He Kui was well-prepared. Short of a Gundam-level assault, even against two or three elite squads, he was confident he could escape.
"Then I'll leave things to you," he said, shaking hands with Erin at the port.
"We look forward to your success, Commander He."
"Indeed. But I have one more request upon my return," he said softly, so only Erin could hear.
"Oh? What is it?"
"I'd like to visit the district head."
If anyone truly understood Clotho, it would be Durandal. And the person closest to Durandal was Talia. Clearly, his next step would be to approach her—though only after his dealings with The Clan.
"That won't be a problem." Erin nodded, assuming He Kui simply wanted to pay a courtesy visit.
"I'll mention it to the district head."
"Thank you."
With a potential path to address the Clotho issue, He Kui felt a bit more at ease.
Once on Earth, he intended to stay within Gibraltar's walls, letting the Aegis handle outside affairs. Should any Clan infiltrators lurk within, his bots were more than capable of defense. After all, no matter how formidable The Clan might be, they'd be hard-pressed to breach Gibraltar's defenses.
