Kapitel 190: Chapter 190: The Radar Station Bombing

Before long, they returned to PLANT. Cagalli, true to her carefree nature, fell asleep on the way back, not even managing to finish watching He Kui at work.

As he had said, once back in PLANT, He Kui promptly arranged for her to stay at his asteroid-based company. Entrusting his parents to look after her, with Hawk secretly monitoring her, he temporarily set the matter aside.

Meanwhile, He Kui, who hadn't been back at the Hailan Design Bureau for long, soon received startling news.

"Hawk, are you serious?"

"...Yes. Meyrin wants to work directly at the Hailan Design Bureau. I've reviewed her performance, and she does show considerable talent in systems and electronic warfare. She should be able to meet the requirements," Hawk replied, speaking cautiously.

If Meyrin truly had the talent, there was no need to complete her studies first—Adjusters often displayed such unique abilities. With his influence at the bureau and connections he had built, arranging a position for someone wasn't a big deal.

"If Commander He Kui has any objections, we can drop the idea."

"No, that's alright."

He Kui realized he could still use a secretary and decided Meyrin could be a good fit.

After finishing his discussion with Hawk, He Kui went straight to Erlin's office.

"Erlin."

Erlin sat behind her desk, still looking somewhat fatigued.

"He Kui, just in time."

"Is something wrong?"

"I may need to trouble you to make a trip to Gibraltar—and take the prototype of the flexible-wing GAT-X for testing," Erlin said, her brow furrowed with concern.

"Why?"

Hearing that he was needed on Earth, He Kui frowned as well. Earth was dangerous, especially now, and if he went, he risked encountering the clash between the two "strongest warriors." Even in an incomplete form, their duel wasn't something he wanted to be involved in.

While the flexible wings certainly needed testing in an atmospheric environment, such work should never fall to someone of his rank.

"The radar station there was bombed!"

Erlin's tone was bitter, laced with frustration.

He Kui let out a small sigh. "This has happened before, hasn't it?"

"Yes, but it seems they haven't learned. If it weren't for his connections with certain councilors, he'd have been dismissed long ago."

Erlin's comment was deliberately vague, hinting at the need for He Kui to tread carefully and avoid crossing certain individuals. Although He Kui didn't belong to the Zala faction, he and Erlin were still allies within the Hailan Bureau.

"Understood."

Seeing He Kui's knowing look, Erlin nodded approvingly. Talking to someone who understood subtleties always saved time—something she appreciated greatly in He Kui.

"When am I expected to leave?"

"Next week. While you're there, upgrade their defense systems. We can't afford another trip if more issues arise."

Given Gibraltar's strategic importance, the fact that they wanted someone of his rank to personally oversee the defense upgrades wasn't surprising. With the base itself well-secured, if he managed to repair the radar, he might be able to mitigate the situation.

With his plan in mind, He Kui looked at Erlin.

"No problem. By the way, I'd like to recruit a student from the academy."

"A student? For what role?"

"A secretary."

"That's fine. Send me her name, and I'll conduct the necessary background checks."

"Meyrin Hawke."

"Meyrin Hawke?" Erlin's expression showed a hint of surprise.

He Kui's smile took on a cryptic quality. "Yes, Hawke."

"Understood. I'll have an answer for you tomorrow."

As someone who was well-informed about the current batch of cadets, Erlin knew this cohort of twenty red-uniformed cadets well, along with their family backgrounds. The Hawke family, in particular, were known supporters of the Zala faction.

From He Kui's smile, Erlin inferred this was a signal for alliance—a notion that aligned with her interests and would speed up the process.

"There's one more thing."

Having settled his first matter, He Kui's expression turned serious as he handed Erlin a file.

"What's this?"

"The basic theory for the Resonance Magnet Defense Shield, along with a proposed quantum communication setup to enable remote control similar to the DRAGOON system."

"You mean the DRAGOON? But this is a defense variant?"

As He Kui explained, Erlin skimmed through the data.

"The Resonance Magnet Defense Shield…"

From the data alone, Erlin could see it shared some similarities with the existing beam shield. If the beam shield fused electromagnetic and optical technology, this new shield took electromagnetism to the next level.

"A remarkable idea. But it's only in theory?"

"Without the necessary materials, it's still confined to computer simulations."

He Kui shrugged, acknowledging that the theory he provided wasn't entirely complete.

"I'll file this for further review. As for materials… they're rare, even here in PLANT."

Finding something stable enough to generate a powerful electromagnetic field while maintaining structural integrity would be challenging. While it was still feasible to produce for elite pilots, the scarcity of these materials made it unlikely for mass production.

"No rush."

He Kui smiled.

"By the way," Erlin continued, "if this project succeeds, along with your work on the DRAGOON, you'll likely be positioned to oversee two design bureaus."

"Oversee…?"

"The Unified Design Bureau. Since it's under our leadership, each of the five design bureaus will need two people in charge. The Hailan Design Bureau will eventually be restructured into the Unified Design Bureau."

"Will all departments be merged?"

"Yes. However, given Director Su and Director Haneves' contributions, they may shift slightly in focus, but it's manageable."

"Thank you."

Seeing the approval in her eyes, He Kui responded humbly.

Their goal now was to dominate the other design bureaus—a difficult task, but one that could be achieved through results.

"Just one more question."

"Go ahead," Erlin replied, taking a sip of tea.

"When is Chairman Zala's Enhanced Combat Plan scheduled for a council vote?"

"Tomorrow, I believe."

"Tomorrow…"

"Why do you ask?"

"What if someone leaks the plan?"

Erlin's expression grew tense at the implication of treason among PLANT's high-ranking officials.

"Do you know something?"

"...No, I just have an uneasy feeling."

"Even if the Clyne faction has softened, they wouldn't betray us. Don't worry."

He Kui knew that Erlin, as a bureau director, didn't have access to the full details, so probing further wouldn't yield much.

"Understood."

He Kui forced a smile. With his position, he might be able to accuse Rau Le Creuset of genetic issues if he had indirect evidence, but without a shred of proof, it would be difficult.

Unable to think of any immediate plan, he returned home.

By the time he arrived, Shi He had already prepared a sumptuous dinner and was waiting at the dining table.

"My apologies."

He Kui laughed as he sat beside her.

"No need. How did the discussion about the new technology go?"

"Pretty well. I'll be heading to Earth soon."

"Earth? What for?"

He Kui repeated Erlin's instructions, and Shi He looked visibly unimpressed.

"That commander…"

"I'll go with you. I need to conduct high-energy pulse cannon tests anyway."

"That works. But tonight…"

A grin spread across He Kui's face, a mischievous glint in his eye. His recent work at DSSD had strengthened him more than any amount of supplements.

"Let's eat first, alright?"

Shi He's gaze held a teasing glimmer as

she looked at him.

"And then we'll head to Gibraltar together."

"Gibraltar is one thing, but we're in PLANT now."

Would he be able to outlast her tonight? He was sure he would!
