Kapitel 80: Spotlight #89: Dice Love

Have you ever wanted to make a grand return? Well, after two months of inactivity, the spotlight is back temporarily and ready to shine on the Girl's Love webcomic: Dice Love by RZNT! Let's end off this year's pride month with a bit of bang!

Summary

Julia is a woman of many successes from a young age; she was born into wealth while being raised to succeed in her current occupation as an office boss. Unfortunately, the only thing she seems to not succeed in is romance, as she promptly dumped her rather toxic boyfriend after she stole her out of car and home. However, just when she was about to take her permanent break on love, a mysterious woman named June just so happens to walk into her life.

She tries to dismiss the flirtatiously fanged femme fatale, but after a few too many drinks and a shocking revelation, it seems that the two are going to be spending a little too much time together. And while pretty much every one of Julia's friends tells her to stay away, it seems she can't help but catch feelings for her. Now it's just the matter of making sure those feelings don't change as quickly as rolling dice.

Characters

Julia: Our better half of the leading duo, Julia is a woman of high aspirations and expectations, thus making her rather strict and easily annoyed. Due to her upbringing and past relationships, she constantly worries over what others think and is always willing to put heavy burdens on her shoulders. However, with June around, Julia is starting to become far more friendly and less of a stick in the mud.

June: Where do I even begin with her? For starters, June is a woman that's both an open book and a mystery. When it comes to those she's interested in, June is excessively joking and flirtatious. This, combined with her somewhat reckless attitude and charismatic nature and she seems to have a regretful and layered past.

Luna: The middle man to both June and Julia Luna is a woman that comes from a dark family. Because of this, she is rather introverted yet logically truthful and serves as an amazing confidant to anyone who needs her.

Stella: Luna's bright-eyed co-worker, Stella, is a young woman with a lot of ambition and, unfortunately, little recognition. She often lies and puts on a brave face to hide her inner frustrations and can get annoyed with Luna's truthful observations as she would like to reveal them outside of work or earshot of her family.

Elisa: Julia's younger sister, Elisa, is so far the biggest roadblock in Julia and June's relationship. She is highly judgemental of June and Julia's decision's respectively, but it comes from a place of love. She is someone that tries to protect her family at all cost from themselves, even if it can come off cruel.

Overview

Honestly, Dice Love is the best example of good but simple. I really appreciate RZNT's ambition as an artist, and I can feel her really trying to compose her art since it vastly improves despite being simple. Art aside, Dice Love has a lot of really great expressions and designs, with some of the posters and side art in the filler chapters being absolutely her best work.

Overall though, Dice Love, despite the over 70 chapters, is definitely a story still in its beginning stages. June and Julia, for the most part, despite falling fast to me, have a lot naturally paced barriers to keep them apart and simply more similarities than it seems on the surface. The series also seems to have surprisingly adult and hidden backstories for some characters like Luna and June that get subtly expanded upon in the times to come to create tension and mystery.

But if you aren't here for the art and story, then really just stay for the characters. Outside of June and Julia, we get a plethora of charmingly simple and casually LGBT characters like the introverted Raine and, of course, Stella and Luna's budding relationship that steals the show. Honestly, with the story giving a lot more focus on the side characters, I hope we get to see more of their story.

Finally, as the same with many canvas stories, I very much appreciate the high interaction between the author and the audience plus webtoon in general. Dice Love has many birthday interviews for many of the characters and displays a couple of huge canvas webtoon holiday collabs, both stunning and beautiful. I truly get a kick when authors do both of these events since it creates a better sense of closeness in general.

Epilogue

Overall, Dice Love is an okay webtoon that I think has potential, but for now, it gets a decent rating from me despite its relatively big presence on Canvas. It's a story that I can tell is trying and becoming more complicated, and if there were ever a message that I would like to grasp on the series, it would be that at the end of the day, Love is a leap of faith. Meaning that regardless of if we can get hurt, we have to take that leap if we're going to find that special someone.

Which fits pretty well with my current predicament, hence why I partially picked this webtoon over Acception, Hey I'm Gay and the newest series Boyfriends. Because recently, I've entered a huge writing competition on the writing site called Webnovel under the name of Donniedrako15 and the writing entry The Cons. And in my effort to win over the competition, I hope to bring everything I have, which means just less spotlights for the foreseeable future, in the effort of taking my leap of faith.

Nonetheless, I will pop by with another spotlight or 2 when I have the chance since I truly want to reach 100 sometime soon. Plus, celebrating Pride month in some small way isn't half bad either, even if I am straight. But with this spotlight done, let's put it through a prism and see where it decides to take us next.
