Kapitel 127: Dante's Veil

As Lyra jolted awake from her nap, a sense of urgency coursed through her veins. She leaped out of bed, determined to find Dante and confront him about the unsettling revelations that had plagued her dreams. But as she reached for the door, she froze, her eyes widening in disbelief.

Instead of the familiar hallway, a dark, swirling vortex greeted her, its inky tendrils reaching out like grasping fingers. The sight sent a chill down Lyra's spine, reminding her of the oppressive shadow veil that enveloped the mansion. "What is this?" she whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and anger.

Suddenly, Dante materialized from the shadows behind her, his presence both comforting and unnerving. "Good morning, Lyra," he said, his tone deceptively calm.

Lyra whirled around, her eyes flashing with accusations. "What is this, Dante? Did you trap me?" Her voice rose, the betrayal she felt seeping into every word. "I guess Aurora was right. I'm just your pet, aren't I?"

Dante's eyes widened, a flicker of hurt passing over his features. "No, Lyra! That's not it at all!" He stepped forward, his hands held out in a gesture of reassurance. "I just want to keep you safe. I can't bear the thought of what happened with Aurora happening again."

He took a deep breath, his gaze meeting hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "With my own shadow veil, they can't attack you. You'll be protected, Lyra."

Lyra's mind raced, pieces of the puzzle falling into place. "You control the shadow veil?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dante hesitated, a shadow of uncertainty passing over his face. "Not exactly. My father and I share a similar essence technique." He paused, his eyes distant, as if grappling with an unseen weight. "I am destined to be like him, Lyra. But it's not a fate I desire."

Lyra's heart softened, a wave of empathy washing over her. She reached out, her hand resting gently on Dante's arm. "It's okay, Dante. I understand." But even as she spoke the words, a flicker of unease stirred within her. "I just don't feel comfortable with this. It feels like another cage, no matter how gilded."

Dante closed his eyes, his brow furrowed in thought. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, he nodded, a resignation in his posture. "I understand, Lyra. But you need some form of protection. Anyone without authority won't be able to harm you."

Lyra's mind raced, weighing her options. With Dante's shadow veil, she would be shielded from Aurora's wrath, and perhaps even gain insight into the inner workings of the Nightfall Mafia's leader's own veil. It was a gamble, but one she felt compelled to take.

"Alright," she said at last, her voice steady despite the trepidation that gnawed at her. "I agree, Dante. But I need you to promise me that I'm not a prisoner. That I can leave whenever I choose."

Dante's eyes softened, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Of course, Lyra. You have my word. Just walk through the portal, and you'll be free to go."

With a nod, Lyra squared her shoulders, ready to face whatever lay ahead. "Okay. Now, let's head to the lab. We have work to do."

Dante grinned, his hand outstretched in invitation. "As you wish, my moonbeam."
