45% Vampire's Diary / Chapter 27: Surveillance

Kapitel 27: Surveillance

After following the police back to the police station, Huang Mao was taken away. After the procedures were completed, he had to be interrogated overnight. The police had some evidence and could basically prove that he was the murderer of the 7.31 robbery. It was useless even if he didn't admit it.

Officer Chen called Xiang Kun to an empty meeting room and closed the door. Officer Chen could not help but nag,

"What's wrong with you? Didn't I tell you not to act rashly? The suspect might have a controlled knife and is very dangerous. Why did you make a move? Just because you can fight, you want to attack with your bare hands?"

Xiang Kun was helpless as well. He did not want to make a move either. He wanted to keep a low profile, but the suspect charged at him with a knife. How could he dodge? Tang Baona and her friend were beside him.

However, he also knew that Officer Chen meant well and was also thinking about his safety. As the saying went, "No matter how skilled you are, you are still afraid of a kitchen knife." There were many news stories of professional fighters being killed or crippled by hooligans on the streets.

"That guy was hiding in a narrow path. I was waiting outside for your people to come over, but he suddenly went crazy and rushed out with a knife. I had no choice but to take action."

After hearing Xiang Kun's explanation, Officer Chen thought for a while and pointed to a chair for Xiang Kun to sit down. Then he passed him a cigarette. Xiang Kun said he didn't want to smoke, so he lit one himself and sat down.

Looking at Officer Chen, who was smoking, Xiang Kun could not help but feel puzzled. What was going on?

"Mr. Xiang, I remember the last time when you registered your personal information, you said that your previous company had closed down and you were temporarily staying in the company? How is it now, do you have any updates on your new job?"

Xiang Kun was puzzled. Why did Officer Chen suddenly care about his personal situation? Hence, after some deliberation, he replied, "I want to rest for a period of time and reorganize my career."

"Mr. Xiang has been practicing martial arts since young, right?" Officer Chen asked again.

"Erm, not exactly martial arts… It's just that I'm a little interested in martial arts. I've been practicing it on and off. Then I went to the gym to train my strength. I've never practiced it systematically before." Xiang Kun had never been interested in martial arts or fighting. He had never practiced martial arts before. At most, he would watch some action movies. However, he knew that Officer Chen had doubts about his skills, so he had to come up with a reason.

After that, Officer Chen talked for a while. He talked about Marvel Superheroes and martial arts novels. Xiang Kun was even more confused. He asked directly, "Officer Chen, you must be very busy now, right? The suspect has just been arrested. Don't you need to interrogate him personally?"

Officer Chen stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray and said, "It's not that fast over there. It hasn't started yet. Do you know that this kid actually has quite the anti-reconnaissance awareness? After the case happened, we pulled up the video near the ATM and found that no matter if it was inside or outside the ATM, the security cameras at the side or outside the store didn't capture the suspect. The place he chose to attack happened to not have any surveillance cameras, and he avoided other surveillance cameras along the way. After committing the crime, he chose the escape route and also avoided the surveillance cameras. Only a few of the surveillance cameras seemed to have captured a corner of his body, but we couldn't determine his exact location and identity…"

"Didn't you confirm his identity the next day?" Xiang Kun asked curiously. He did not think the suspect was smart.

Initially, he thought that it was a vendetta. However, when he heard the police say that it was a robbery? What era was this? Would smart people still hold knives on the streets to rob or even kill people? How many people would still carry large amounts of cash with them now? It was said that the victim who had died after he was stabbed had only received 1,000 yuan from the ATM. He would receive a red packet at the banquet tomorrow. Combined with the fact that the suspect had just been released from prison, it was likely that he had a criminal mindset from more than ten years ago. The so-called anti-reconnaissance ability was useless in modern criminal investigation methods.

Officer Chen nodded. "That's because we got a clear picture of him from the other surveillance cameras and confirmed his identity. We also found his residence in the city and found a lot of evidence there. However, this kid probably heard the news and knew that this matter was serious. He ran away before we found his residence. That's why you ran into him on the street."

Xiang Kun listened attentively and did not speak. He knew that Officer Chen must have something to say to him since he had suddenly revealed the details of the investigation.

As expected, Officer Chen changed the topic. "At that time, we thought that the suspect must have set a foot in front of the cameras to be able to evade so many surveillance cameras. Therefore, we pulled out the surveillance cameras near the ATM a few days before the incident and checked all the intersections in that area."

Xiang Kun's heart skipped a beat as he realized something.

Officer Chen asked, "Mr. Xiang, it wasn't a coincidence that you encountered that case that day, right? During this period of time, you've been 'patrolling' everywhere at night?"

Xiang Kun finally understood why Officer Chen had been talking to him about superheroes and martial arts novels. It was because he had been "patrolling the streets" every night and had been captured by the surveillance cameras. When he was searching for clues, he had been discovered by the police.

Not sleeping every night, "patrolling the streets" all night for days in a row, something like this was definitely not normal.

Officer Chen thought that Xiang Kun might have started to think of ways to become a "voluntary police officer" because he had stopped a murder case at his house that day. He purposely patrolled the streets every night to "act bravely".

Xiang Kun screamed in his heart that he had been wronged. It was really a coincidence that he had found the stabbed victim that night! And it was a coincidence that he did not want to encounter!

However, he couldn't explain it that way. Officer Chen's understanding was actually the best. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to explain why he ran out to "patrol the streets" several nights in a row. He could only stammer.

Therefore, Officer Chen nagged at him for more than ten minutes, repeatedly telling him to call the police if he encountered any trouble and not to be a hero himself before letting him leave the police station.

Xiang Kun had caught the suspect today, so he could get the 20,000 yuan reward from the police station. However, he would only get the money after some time. It was a pleasant surprise.

Initially, Xiang Kun had wanted to interview the reporters, but he rejected all of them. He also hoped that Officer Chen would not reveal his name and identity to the media. If possible, it would be best if there was a restriction on the video of him capturing the suspect.

Officer Chen admired Xiang Kun for that. He felt that Xiang Kun was the kind of person who really wanted to "fight crime" and not for reputation.

Standing at the entrance of the police station, Xiang Kun felt a little scared.

If he hadn't gotten to know Officer Chen because he had stopped the murder downstairs, if he hadn't discovered the crime scene himself and given the police a preconceived idea of what was going on, when the police were looking at the surveillance footage from a few days ago, they would have definitely treated him as a suspect when they saw that he had been 'patrolling the streets' every night instead of sleeping!

If they investigated and found out that not only did Xiang Kun patrol the streets at night, but he could also spend an entire day in the gym, they would definitely find it strange.

Then, if they searched his room and found some records on his computer, or even threw the rabbit's body in the trash can on the street, there would be even more problems.

He didn't know what would happen then. Although he wouldn't be blamed for it, his body mutation would definitely be exposed.

"Looks like I was not careful enough," Xiang Kun muttered to himself.

Fortunately, the tenant of the house he bought had already given him permission to move. He had found a house and was ready to move. He would be able to empty the house around 6th. At that time, he would move over. Although the surrounding facilities were also very complete, the population density was not as high as here, and there were not many surveillance cameras.

After returning home, Xiang Kun replied to Baona's WeChat message and briefly explained what happened today.

Baona also explained that Yang Zhen Er had misunderstood him and went to argue with him. She also confirmed with Xiang Kun that the baldy was not him on the popular video of the monk who lived in seclusion.

It was past midnight when Baona finally stopped talking and said goodnight to each other. She then told Xiang Kun that they had agreed to go on a hike together at 7 AM on Sunday.

They chatted for almost two hours.

The two of them were originally "friends" who were somewhat unfamiliar with each other and could even be considered "awkward", but unexpectedly, because of this matter, they inexplicably got along well and became much more normal.
