As his turn arrived, Sun followed the teacher to the elemental test platform.
"All you have to do is touch it. No need to press it and no need to be afraid of it, just rest your hand over it and if it shines, great, if not, go to the next one. Understood?"
"Y-yes, madam!"
"Hehe, no need to be so tense. Just go and do it. Nothing you do now will change any of the results anyway..."
(So there are things I could do before that would change the results??)
Sun raised this question in his mind but didn't have the courage to ask, so he did what he was supposed to do and walked to the platform.
On the platform there was a long table with 8 stones over it. Each stone was separated from the others and each was inside a different type of magical circle.
Sun walked to the first stone and stared at it for a second.
The stone was dark red, as if made out of blood. It gave Sun the impression it was alive, and he could almost feel it pulse every few seconds.
Sun slowly approach the stone and put his hand over it.
He felt the sharp surface of the stone. It was smooth and cold, as if made from tips of multiple blades.
Sun understood why the guide had warned him against pressing it. The multiple tips were sharp, if he pressed it with his hands, his hands would surely be cut by them.
After waiting for a few seconds, nothing happened. It seems like this was a failure, so he had no need to waste any more time on this one and decided to try the next one on it's side.
The second stone was smooth. Completely smooth. Without a single tip or defect that could endanger the Sun's hand. It was shaped like an egg and the wave like markings on it made it look like a piece of art. Sun put his hand on it and like the one before, it was cold. Five seconds passed, nothing happened again and he decided to try the next one.
Sun had heard that elemental aptitude was rare. Less than 1% of the population had it, so it was expected that he was the same, but because it was free and because of his friend insistence Sun decided to try as well.
It was not like he had anything to lose. He had permission of his father and nothing holding him back, that's why he thought it was fine to take a break from work and play along his best friend before going back to work. He was still young and could afford to waste a few days, right?
It could be said that this whole experience was nothing but a game to him. Something he expected to lose. Yes, he expected to lose, but even if that was how it was, that didn't mean that he didn't hope to win.
So on each stone that he tested, he put all his hope, all his faith, in those 5 seconds, expecting for a miracle.
"Please! Please! React to me..."
"Please! Please! React to me!"
"Please! Please! Shine for me!"
"Shine for me! Right now!"
And as if reacting to his desire, the light green stone, the sixth stone to be tested, reacted to his plea, letting out a small shine as he let go of the stone.
"Yes!!!!!! This is it! It shone!"
"Congratulation on passing the first test. You can take this stone and go to the Wind Summoning tent."
"Yes, sir! Thank you!"
"Oh, wait! You-"
Before the guide could say anything, Sun had already jumped off the platform and ran off to the summoning tent.
"- didn't finish testing the other stones... Oh, well. He already tested most of them, so it should be fine, right? NEXT!!!"
The next person to enter the tent was Ray.
Like all other times before, the guide gave the same instructions.
"All you have to do is touch it. No need to press it and no need to be afraid of it, just rest your hand over it and if it shines, great, if not, go to the next one. Understood?"
"Got it, aunty."
Hearing his answer, the guide wished she could teach him a lesson, but she knew this was not the right time and place, so she held her anger inside and smiled at him.
(Just you wait, brat. After this is over, I will find you and teach you a lesson about respect!)
Of course this would probably never happen. There were way too many people being tested for her to remember a single brat among so many others. But still she made her silent vow to herself with no real intention of fulfilling this vow just to calm down.
Different from Sun, Ray went directly to the last stone.
"The void stone. No need to test others, I know this one is the one perfect for me!"
Nobody knew where his confidence came from. It was akin to a joke to blindly believe in this like he did. The guide let out a smirk seeing his clown like act but soon was forced to change her expression into one of shock. The void stone that should not react to anybody had suddenly vanished in thin air, without letting out a single sound.
"What!? Hey lady, the void stone is gone! It vanished as I touched it! It probably couldn't contain my unlimited potential and ran away!"
The lady guide slapped her forehead hearing his absurd conclusion.
"No, idiot. That's the common reaction of the void stone. Once activate, it turns into void again."
"Oh... I see... so I pass?"
"No matter how much I want to say no, yes you pass. Go to the black tent over there and good luck with your summon."
"Yahoo! I knew it! I always knew I was a genius! Wahahahahah!"
"Here, take this pass and show it to the guide in the black tent. Good luck, brat!"
"All right, aunty! I'm going now! This is the start of my legend!!!"
(Don't hit him... DONT HIT HIM!!! ARGH!!!!!)
