Cara woke up the next morning with a leaden feeling in her stomach. She left her room and walked down the stairs trying to calm her nerves, but her limbs were too stiff. Her family were all present, her parents already dressed having breakfast. It was a loud morning in their house as well as outside.
"Eat up, Cara, your mother prepared special food for the day, it's all very good for your core, " said her dad. Indeed the whole table was full of food that had no smell and was too colorless to be of any good taste.
"I don't think I can eat, " she said.
"Yeah, look at her, she looks ready to vomit all over her opponent in the middle of her fight, " said Stevin from the side.
"I am fine, it's just lack of sleep, " she said. She didn't want to appear nervous or scared on the day she was supposed to prove herself.
"It's totally fine Cara, it happens with everyone, I think you have a much better complexion then your brother had during his time, he was pale as a ghost and couldn't stand straight, " said her father.
"Dad! I was just trying to get her mind off of the fight, " said Stevin which was half true.
"All right, that's enough chat, Cara eat up as much as you can, it will be good for you, but won't make much difference, your dad and I have patrol duties during the festival and I am sure your brother must have his plans, so you'll have to go to the podium with all the coppers yourself okay, don't be late this time, " said her mother with no words of comfort.
Cara got a bit annoyed and angry at her, as they left, but found that it was easier to digest her food with an angry mood.
Cara was amazed when she opened the front door of her house and stepped outside, in one night, without making any noise becaus eshe was a light sleeper, someone had decorated every inch of the spiral staircase all the way from bottom to top. The staircase was packed, it was the first time with all these people did she finally realize the size of the thing. She went to the railing and looked up and down, there were different kinds of decorations on different levels. The people moving around were all dressed for the occasion, wearing different colored clothes, there was a theme to their colors, the ones wearing shades of orange and yellow were from Walaur like her, the Seltics were wearing blue, and other colors were Green and Red.
Cara got on the staircase and slowly made her way to the bottommost level and the biggest one, where the festival will largely take place, it was the only level big enough to accommodate all of them. And in the center of it was the circular ground where the fights were going to happen. People from upper levels could even look down and see the fights.
The dwarves from other mountains had been given areas in the bottom level to stay, they had send a few of their people ahead to prepare the place for them, and now the large tents that were being built for weeks were finally packed with dwarves.
Cara had another wave of nausea as she realized just how many people would be watching her. But now she had a trick to deal with her nerves, she imagined what her mother would say if she told her about it.
"Why do you think they'll be watching you? They are not here just for you, " a curt reply in her voice came rapidly to her mind and it did help calm her nerves.
The spectators had started gathering around the large circular stage raised up a little, there were four large pyramid like structures raised one the fours corners where the elders from each mountain would be present along with the rest of the fighters who were going to fight.
Cara hurried off through the sea of people her copper hammer raised high above everyone's head, some of the people who had the sense to look at it, moved aside to give her way. Soon she found herself in the midst of a large group of coppers, all familiar faces, all had the same sick expression on their faces.
The coppers would be fighting first, then the irons, but not all of them only the showcases the elders would pick to show off the strength of their clans, not many irons usually get picked, so Stevin was not in her shoes, then there would be the bigger fights, when the elders might pick the higher ranks, the silvers and the golds. It wasn't compulsory for them to fight only the coppers were supposed to fight to show their numbers and potentials, but due to the rivalry between the clans and the elders couldn't help but want to show the strength of their clan, there are always atleast a few really crazy fights. But she would only be able to enjoy that if her own fight turned out fine, she just wanted to be present inside the ring for atleast ten minutes.
She was looking around for her friends when she spotted a cat sitting on top of a tall but broken pillar, probably used in some festival years ago, it was the same red and white cat that she had seen with Elder Shadow.
No one else was paying even the slightest attention to it, she thought maybe the elders atleast would have recognizes the Elder shadow.
The pillar was right next to the ground, t
He cat had probably the best seat for the event. Cara felt a sense of relief and a little safe, as if the elder would be watching over them. Even though it was just a cat, the strange red stripes on it made it look like a mythical creature.
Elder shadow sensed someone looking at him, and with a cat's sharp eyes found Cara in the middle of a hundred coppers of their mountain. He had never thought of one mountain as his home, he had lived in each of them at some point of his life, it was just a coincidence that he had ended up in Waraul for now. For him the coppers from other mountains were also his kin, and he wanted all of them to become their best selves. There weren't many left with the same thoughts, they had long ago realized that the differences in the mountains might get too big. But they were all dwarves and all ultimately fighting for one thing.
The festival was a way to ensure that, the first elders had started it for this reason, he knew that one of these days he would be seeing the last festival ever, that festival would be really important. But he felt that this festival too was going to be something special for some reason, it was just a feeling he got. The sword of the Baba was still sleeping and his forty siants scattered around the worlds, the four headed thrown still missing burried under the biggest desert, the only way to find it was the upside down hanging ghost Betal.
The elder knew of these facts, in the previous war everything seemed so simple and closer together. He had thought since then by the time he will be able to gather all his forms, he would be able to gather the elements required to win once more, but now things just seemed so much more complicated, he had been lazy, he had wasted too much time. He shouldn't have been selfish, and wasted time on his own cultivation, but deep down in his heart he knew that no matter how much he knew or how much he had, things will only work if fate wanted them to, but he had decided now, if he got his sign from the universe he will start gathering the saints, he will look for the throne and the treasure.
He again looked back in Cara's direction, she was still looking at him. The elder had caught a whiff of her, he smelles three more similar scents around him, probably her parents and her siblings. He went through his memories and was reminded of the festival when he had first caught that smell, an image floated in his head, a girl looking like Cara but not the same hair colors and hieght, must be her mother was fighting, with a similar copper hammer. He had liked her then, she was definitely one of the better fighters from their clan, if the girl was anything like her mother she would be a great addition. The elder came back to the present and looked around and saw Cara's mother, now older, wearing the ribbon that showed that she was on security duty, was moving through the crowd. But what caught his attention was that she was very far from the stage and headed towards the Krolle's tents. She has her eyes fixed on someone or something. He followed the line of her gaze and saw that three Krolle elders wearing red robes were slipping out towards the back of the tents. There was no reason an elder would be going away for now especially when the tournaments about to start. He jumped off the pillar and dived in the sea of people.
Cara looked back to see the car, but it was gone now, she again started feeling a little nervous and scared now.
