Derek had thought that his work in the south would be completed soon, his counter-part in the nation of half-breeds, Donald, was a half-bear and half-man and over eight feet tall. But contrary to his appearance he was very less intimidating once you started talking to him, a very cheerful person, Derek's sour personality was the only reason he didn't like too overzealous people otherwise everybody likes Donald. But when two days ago he had arrived to meet at the South Tower, he found a much more serious Donald. He still didn't know what exactly the matter was, but it was clear something was happening in their nation. Then this morning he had gotten a message about an Urk attack near the Fang mountains. The valley was close to their territory but they had wandered right to the settlements and ransacked two villages. The numbers were alarming too. It wasn't his job to look in the matter right now, the old man would send Michael most probably since it was his department, but the location did interest him and he wanted to be present just in case.
He was waiting in the meeting room, for a final meeting with Donald and then he would leave for the valley at once. Donald's assistant, he didn't remember his name and didn't want to ask, a half-lizard and half-man was standing by the door waiting for Donald too.
"How long is this going to take? I have very urgent business, if it's not important," said Derek.
"It is important," said the man with large lizard eyes, that could move in all directions independently and creeped Derek out.
"I have been here for two days, and you haven't said anything important," said Derek.
"It is not advisable to share incomplete information, that's why Sir Donald had been awaiting for the details, but rest assured it won't take long now," he said.
Derek was not happy at all, first the elves and now them, he was finally starting to get a bad feeling, what's the worst it could be, the fourth Holy War? the thought did send chills down his spine, but still they were prepared much more than before, it was the one thing where all the nations would rally together at an instant and forget their differences. He might not have been their in the last war, but he had faced the void, he was sure all of them together could take them on, and the elves and others long living races, some of them at the council were still present at the third Holy War, and if it was something related to Void, they wouldn't have wasted time with petty politics. Then what was this new threat that had everyone he had met so far so disturbed.
Derek's trail of thoughts broke when Donald entered the room, it wasn't easy to not notice him when he easily took half the space of the room.
"Mr. Derek," said Donald looking down at him much more seriously than ever more.
"We need your help," said Donald.
"Help? With what, you know you have my help always," said Derek.
"I am afraid just your help won't be useful, let me tell you the whole matter, it all started about two weeks ago," said Donald taking his seat.
"Have you hears of Quesselve?" asked Donald.
"I think it's a city in your nation." replied Derek.
"Yes, one of our best port cities in the south, two weeks ago we lost all contact to it, we sent a lot of scouts, highly trained ones too, but it took us a week for some kind of message to come back, and he came back with this sticking in his leg," said Donald and placed an arrow on the table between them. The arrow was much longer and thicker than usual, it was made of some kind of red metal, the point was barbed and very harsh looking. But Derek even without any emblem or sign could just tell who the arrow belonged to.
"Barbarians." said Derek.
"Yes, Red Barbarians, we have confirmed it with eye witnesses, they have attacked from the sea, in large war-ships bigger than a Dwarven ship, we are ready to launch an attack as we speak, a very large arms is standing by a few miles from the city ready to attack," said Donald.
"Why haven't you then?" asked Derek, the barbarians although the name might suggest they are all about might, aren't fools, they use magic, they have wizards that are called ritualists, and they use blood magic the worst kind of magic there is, involved in things like necromancy and cannabalism they are the worst enemies to have. They are much closer to humans than any race, you can't tell them apart, if they wore human clothes and walked straight, but still the half-breeds weren't a peaceful race by any means and they would have launched a full war by now.
"They are smart, they are holding the city hostage, before they would just use to kill the prisoners, so that they won't have to feed them, but the city feeds itself, and they have learned from past mistakes, we would still have tried stealth operations if that was all, but when the attack happened, the king's daughter was in the city, and now they have her too, she was living in the duke's castle, so thinking she is a noble they have all of them under very strong guard, but they don't know her real identity yet, once they'll know that, I don't think she will see daylight again, I know her personally, I raised her when she was only the size of my finger, we can't take any risks, and we don't have any time, I am afraid we are not suited for these kind of extremely sensitive stealth operations, they know all our tricks, that's why we need your help," said Donald.
Derek took his time processing the information, his mind worked fast as he saw beyond the obvious facts, first the Urks, then the Barbarians, he had even heard increasing goblin sightings near the elves cities from Roren, these were all the races that were under the influende of the Void, their rising up is not a good sign at all. But he will think about that later, right now he had something else to deal with, the king won't help the half-breeds the matter isn't of any importance to him, although he is just and the old man would try to persuade him, but even he won't be able to to do anything much, it's just the nature of their relations, the half-breeds would refuse at once too if their roles were reversed, it's just their stupid insecurties coming in the way. But he knew it was a great chance to improve their relations, but the mission was too difficult and with a lot of pressure on it, if something went bad, the realation they had developed would all be destroyed. He can't just say yes until he has a full plan in mind. He could ask Blade, who might be able to think of something, but the favour this time would be too big, and dangerous even for her, and he had already used the previous one for Ash. There was only one way he could think of now, only one way to help, THE SOUL KNIGHTS.
