"Alex… are you even listening to me?" Sarah's voice broke through his thoughts, her tone a mixture of worry and exasperation. She tightened her grip on his arm, steadying him as they moved through the dimly lit streets.

Alex winced but managed a weak smile. "Sorry. Just… thinking."

"You can think later," she snapped, though her voice softened immediately. "Right now, we need to get you somewhere safe before Evelyn's people catch up."

The rain started again, a light drizzle that quickly turned the city streets into slick, treacherous paths. Sarah looked around anxiously, her mind racing for a plan. They couldn't go to Alex's apartment—it was too obvious. And her own place? Out of the question. Evelyn's reach was too vast, and her spies were everywhere.

"We'll go to Max's place," she decided abruptly, tugging Alex toward the next intersection.

Alex's brows furrowed. "Max? You trust him with this?"
