Kapitel 39: THE FALL OF THE FORTRESS CITY.

As they continued to climb, they managed to see the abandoned stairs that were once built in the place and soon they began to climb them, but a humming like a melody made Lindel go silent.

Everyone's blood began to freeze, because they felt a terrible presence in the place, no one moved, not a muscle, but they only heard the old man shout LILI!

A silence invaded the place while everyone looked bewildered at Lindel, who soon heard a sound that was still engraved in his very soul since that day, memories invaded his mind, because tragedy ravaged his being corroding his soul, just as time devours life itself.

The creaking of bones and a sharp sound like the grinding of the teeth of a great beast were heard deep in the catacomb.

The motionless old man looked into the darkness with a lost look, everything was as vivid as that day!

We can't leave the people of this place to their fate, we must protect them, the fortress city was entrusted to us by our lord, and we must be here when he returns!

It's very dangerous Lili, the cavalry along with the infantry will face the great gate, I'm sure they can repel the attack.

Something is not right, I have a bad feeling, this army is large enough to finish off any legion of monsters, but something in my chest keeps telling me that we are in mortal danger! - said Lili - We must go to the front, they will not make it without us!

The main street was full of corpses of spider monsters, but there were no dead people at all, it was a crushing victory, few people were still hiding.

To the catacombs, come on, run! – said Lili – they are still under construction, but it is the safest fortification, if something happens, they can hide there, thousands and thousands of people from inside the city ran and some warned others where to go, the danger seemed to have passed, but an uncomfortable silence began to take over the place as they approached where the dispute was supposed to be taking place, so they decided to hurry, because even Lindel who was quite absent-minded perceived something different.

The sky turned red, and darkness appeared in front of the great city because that attack was only the prelude to what was to come, there was no army or force in that place that could withstand what was about to emerge from the darkness.

The silence was broken and the horses ran away in terror with an agonizing cry, leaving their masters lying on the ground or dragging them against their will. A heavy wind came from the forest towards the entrance, like a gust that hit the walls of the fortress that barely resisted such fierce attacks.

The lord of the fortress and his soldiers faced the entrance, his legs were so shaky that his knees made a deafening noise when they touched the armor.

I will not tell you not to be afraid, you have every right to do so, what is out there surpasses all of us and most likely we will die, I do not know if your families will manage to survive, but if you truly love them, we must resist as much as we can!

In the reddened sky, a huge hole opened up, and in its darkness, colossal jaws were seen. Everyone was perplexed for a few seconds, until they began to open, and she came out…

Both Lili and Lindel felt terrified because even in the distance they could see what was happening. They both fell silent and quickened their pace even more, but it was in vain because when they reached the doors, they saw all the warriors paralyzed, looking up at the sky while their eyes were oozing blood.

Looking more closely at the soldiers, they noticed that their hearts were no longer in their places, as huge holes pierced their chests.

The king… it can't be that he is too… wherever Tarantil is, he should be here, - said Lili –

Hey… what are you supposed to be doing… what the hell are you doing – shouted Lindel – as he watched the king on his knees offering a pile of hearts that belonged to his vassals, still beating.

Please, heal her, heal my little one as promised – said the King –

Very well, our servant, take me to her… now you will see how we will reward your loyalty – whispered the lady in the king's ear –

Giving the king a sidelong glance at Lindel and Lili, a few tears came out of his eyes and rising into the skies with the lady they headed towards the castle.

Damn…what's going on, I have to follow them, go with the people to the shelter, make sure they're safe and then go with our people here – Lindel said with a pale face –

Lili hugged Lindel, and brought his face close to her chest and in her arms she said to him: your heart beats very fast, but not the same way as when you freed me from my crystal prison, but, I think, if it does so for the same reason, you love me… and I love you, I don't know why you're so scared, but I won't leave you here alone because now we're not two but three…

Lindel looked up and his eyes lit up with hers.

Lili! Since when… are you okay? Lindel said as he lifted him onto his shoulders while spinning him around with great enthusiasm.

He's already a couple of months old, but I wanted to be sure to surprise you – said Lili – as tears came out of her eyes.

Lindel took her by the hand, as if he never wanted to let go, to which she murmured, "It's okay, I'm here with you and I'm not going anywhere!"

The streets were empty and the corpses of the city's guardians lay mutilated and heartless like a bad omen that extended in the same direction they walked.

Just as our oath was made, I fulfilled my vows, the city is yours, my people, my honor, I must lose everything for you to raise it from there, my daughter is the only thing I have left of my beloved wife, I will never forgive him for letting my wife die, he is no longer my friend - said the king through tears lying on the ground -

Beyond the throne was hidden the reason for his betrayal, on a bed, prostrate lay the body of a young woman who could barely breathe, a sick and decaying body accompanied her, it was almost unbearable to see her due to the advanced state of her necrotic skin, bandages covered part of the body that was already useless, she was a corpse in the eyes of anyone.

I can clearly see why she is like this, the power inside her is so great that her body cannot bear it… perhaps in your crude eyes it may seem like a curse, but it is divine grace that gave her this blessing – said the lady while biting her lips a little –

Tarantil did not understand what the lady was trying to do, he just stood still as if his blood was freezing, at the same time he could watch in astonishment as she approached the dying girl, took her in her arms and removed the bandage from her face to proceed to join her lips with his.

An enormous crimson energy destroyed the palace, revealing the chamber where they were, now this place housed the girl in an unattractive cocoon that was repulsive to the eye, as those hearts seemed to form the chrysalis where she was now.

Now you see Tarantil, when your daughter comes out of there she will be fully recovered, healthy, strong, beautiful, a worthy crimson bride at my service said the dark lady while smiling ecstatically at what she had done.

At your service? That was not what we agreed, what are you hiding from me, what will become of my daughter, answer once and for all… - said Tarantil in desperation –

Just modify our agreement a little, I don't think it should matter, any place is better for her than her agonizing past confined in this place... I will give her what you have not been able to give her... a life - said the dark lady -

She raised her hand and cut her wrist, letting blood fall on the chrysalis, which made the ground tremble, causing a large branch of sharp crimson ropes to emerge that seemed to have a conscience of their own, animals, people, everything was stripped of life as these pierced them like thorns, Tarantil saw in horror what was happening, and had no choice but to unsheathe his sword and pounce on her.

What are you doing, this is over, this is not what you promised?

– Tarantil shouted –

However, she held the king's sword coldly and disinterestedly, as she did not even look him in the eyes with the intention of giving him a coherent reason for what he replied, as with a tone of disappointment she commented:

You should have just stayed there watching, DEVOURER arises! Let's do this task faster... I suppose only one will be enough... to finish them all.

On the way to that place Lindel took off a pendant from his chest,

a locket! – said Lili – while he placed it on his chest.

It is a very precious gift for me, and now it will protect you and my son, my greatest treasures, I will never forget what I felt when I saw you in that crystal, I knew it in an instant, I knew I had to dedicate my life to you, and I still hold it, here we will paint our family, it is a promise.

An intense kiss like the first time to conclude that sentence sealed their destiny again as a hope. But their moment was interrupted by the huge explosion that occurred in the castle, maybe it was not the moment, maybe there was no time, but Lindel sensed that something was about to break and a lump in his throat tormented him so he let out the feelings he had.

Let's go there, don't leave my side, I'll protect you, Lindel shouted.

At full speed they ran towards the place in question that was in ruins and rubble, there they saw how those protuberances began to pierce and drain any living being they touched, but they easily managed to avoid them, although at that point there were many, soon they saw how Tarantil found himself with a deep wound in one of his arms or where it should be, while he fought with a colossal arachnid monster that had already completely subdued him.

Suddenly the head of the lady of the dark crimson fell to the ground releasing Tarantil's newly mutilated arm, the Devourer fell along with the head of his mistress... Lindel had decapitated her, his two short swords had made a clean cut on her neck.

Lindel, I'm sorry, I wanted Mare to have a better life, but I ruined it, you must leave here, this is not over. My daughter, at least take her, she is here.

I think it is time for her to wake up, the blood of these villagers should be enough to make her emerge… said the mutilated head as it began to rise into the air and place itself back on its body.

The nearby forests shook, as did the waters, and even the air to the sound of a new and larger column of energy that dragged the very ground towards the sky, and from it emerged, wrapped in blood and cobwebs, a daughter of darkness.
