Chapter 9: New Beginnings, Old Shadows

Bella took a deep breath as she got out of the old van in the school parking lot. The Forks High School building loomed in front of her, a reminder of how far away it was from her previous life in Phoenix. The morning was gray and rainy, a stark contrast to the sun and heat she was used to. As she walked towards the entrance, the feeling of being watched did not leave her. It's no big deal, she told herself, but she couldn't help but feel like all eyes were on her

Inside the building, she quickly found herself surrounded by new faces. Mike Newton was the first to approach, a blonde boy with a friendly smile. "You're the new girl, right?" Mike said enthusiastically. I'm Mike, by the way.

"Bella," she replied, trying not to sound awkward.

—Oh, I've heard about you, Bella Swan, right? said a girl with brown hair standing next to Mike. I'm Jessica, and that's Eric over there.

Eric, a thin boy with glasses and a clearly enthusiastic attitude, gave her a small wave. "I'm the guy in charge of the school newspaper," Eric said. If you ever want to be interviewed, you know where to find me.

Bella smiled, trying not to seem overwhelmed by the attention.

"Thanks, it's good to meet everyone," she said, feeling a strange mix of discomfort and relief at not being around. completely alone on her first day.

As they continued walking, Angela, a shy, dark-haired girl, joined the group and greeted her more discreetly. Bella was relieved by Angela's calmness, appreciating the contrast with the others' energy

Later, during lunch, Bella found herself in the cafeteria, surrounded by this new group of people she barely knew. Bella felt a strange energy in the air. She looked in the direction of the door and saw a group of people entering who stood out above the rest. They were, without a doubt, the Cullens. Jessica, noticing Bella's attention, leaned towards her, smiling mischievously. "Those are the Cullens," she said in a low tone, as if it were an important secret.

Bella looked at them curiously as Jessica began to describe who was who.

—The girl with the short hair is Alice, and the tall boy with the messy hair is Jasper. "They're a couple, just like Emmett and Edythe." Jessica pointed to Emmett, a muscular guy with a carefree smile, and Edythe, a girl with copper hair who seemed to shine under the light. But Edward and Rosalie—she pointed to the two that remained—are single.

However, it was Edward in particular that caught her attention. His pale skin, copper hair, and distant demeanor made him stand out in an almost unreal way

Bella couldn't help but compare him to Ethan, the boy she went through a lot with last summer. He was handsome too, but in a different way. Where Edward had a cold, almost supernatural elegance, Ethan had been pure fire, intensity… humanity.

Now, comparing the intensity of Edward's eyes with Ethan's warmth, she realized that, although her feelings for Ethan were still present, something about Edward attracted her magnetically. When Edward looked at her from her spot, their eyes met for a moment, and Bella felt a shiver run down her spine. It was as if something invisible and inescapable connected her destinies.

Throughout the day, Bella had her first real encounter with Edward in Biology class, an interaction that was as tense as it was strange. Edward seemed uncomfortable, almost hostile, which only added to Bella's confusion. "What the hell is wrong with him?" she thought as she watched him almost flee the classroom.

That same afternoon, at the reservation, Ethan was completely immersed in his role within the pack. Although Sam and the others usually did patrols in groups, he preferred to do them alone. There was something about solitude that allowed her to concentrate better, to feel his power flow through his body in a more controlled way

Constant training had made his strength continue to grow. In his human form, he had already matched the strength of a vampire, but when he transformed, he was almost unstoppable. Now, in his wolf form, he could take on three vampires without problems, and his speed was no longer just comparable to that of the vampires, it now surpassed her

But it wasn't all training. Ethan patrolled alone, scouring the boundaries between the reservation and the Cullen territory. In part, it was a duty of protection, but the real reason was his constant thoughts about Rosalie. Since their first meeting, she had not left his mind.

"You can't keep doing this," he said to himself as he walked through the forest.

Despite his reasoning, his feet always took him there. the same border. He waited, hoping to see her, even if it was from afar.

For her part, Rosalie couldn't get that "beast" that she had seen in the distance out of her mind. Memories of her imposing figure haunted her, and what she once thought was simple curiosity was now beginning to feel like something more. She began to draw, an activity she had never been interested in before. Now, however, she felt compelled to capture every detail of what she remembered about Ethan, from his musculature to his transformation. Without knowing why, every time she finished a drawing, she felt a strange warmth in her chest.

Edward, sitting in her living room, watched her from the corner of her eye. She couldn't read Ethan's mind, but her sister's emotions were evident to him. "It doesn't make sense," she said quietly, more to herself than to anyone else.

Rosalie ignored him, concentrating on her. what she did. However, deep down, they both knew that something was changing.
