"Oh, so they hired others to guard their stuff."
'Does this prevent anything?' -Lumen
Travis smiled under his mask, "No, if anything it works out. Unlike us semi-immortals the true mortals are quite fearful of losing their lives. Just show off a little strength and they won't hesitate to flee. Especially mercenaries."
'Don't go needlessly killing, they are working for a reason.'
"I'm aware, I always give my opponents a chance to quit. If they don't take that chance then it's their fault if they die."
Travis teleported in front of the area. It was a high level dungeon, one of the best to grind in during the current state of the game. Currently it was claimed by Raven Thread, after Infinity Base began to revamp itself it quickly dropped in rank allowing Raven Thread to claim back its old assets. Constantly preventing access to other players and NPCs. Many players aren't willing to offend the number 1 Guild, and NPCs mostly prefer not to mess with the semi-immortals.
So Raven Thread got away scot-free. It was also Travis' first target.
A mercenary held up their weapon threateningly, "This area is claimed by Raven Thread! No one is allowed pass without permission! Show proof of your identification or leave immediately! If you do not comply you will be killed!"
"No, I'll be taking control here. You're free to leave."
"That's a death wish."
"Death certainly wishes to get their hands on you."
Travis unleashed his War Sight, albeit not at full power. He didn't wish to kill NPCs unnecessarily. For they played a key component to the economy of A World's Legacy.
The mercenaries were most likely at First Stage, for higher Stage combatants usually refused to work under weaker individuals. Even if offered a generous pay.
The mercenaries felt fear, the person challenging them was able to exert so much pressure. Making them feel like their limbs were as heavy as lead!
If they were this powerful from just standing there. . .
Travis removed his War Sight and shouted, "Those who wish to leave, may! Otherwise I will claim your life for remaining!"
The mercenaries hesitated, the panic messing with their thought process.
Travis placed his hand on Lumen's hilt. Which seemed to shock them to their senses. Like dominoes falling, they left the area rapidly. The dungeon's entrance was rapidly emptied, leaving bare land.
Metal clinking was heard, as a figure approached from the distance. They were clapping, metal armor making it sound differently, "As expected of 'One Man Army' Dot. You truly are something."
Travis recognized that voice, "Oh? To think I was popular enough to be granted a visit from the Vice-Leader of Raven Thread. What brings you here?"
"I predicted that you would come after us. News of your actions to the mid-ranked Guilds spread to the ears of all the Guilds. Naturally, given your personality, I expected us to be next. I had slightly hoped that the latest update would have delayed your plans. But it seems if anything it had accelerated them."
This was going along Travis's plan so far. Still Travis acted ignorant and asked, "So what brings you here?"
"Well naturally I couldn't stand idly by as one of our more important zones."
"So you intend to stop me?"
"Ha, I doubt I could fight you in my current state. This update has put many at their weakest. Instead I have come to bargain."
"You should know I'm not someone who backs down from my ideals."
"I'm aware. So I ask you this, what is your goal?"
"To prevent Guilds from claiming a monopoly over key resources."
"Why?"
"You're leaving other players at a disadvantage."
Uranium tapped his thumb against his finger, like pressing a switch to change a slide on a presentation. He then spoke, "Is it not allowed for us to claim what we want?"
"It's not disallowed."
"Then why the fuss?"
"I'm simply trying to even the playing field. If the only reason why you are keeping your position is by suppressing other players, then the position is ill-deserved."
"The game is all about strength. The strong is right! Through this method we become stronger, it is our right!"
"With logic like that you should have no issue with what I am doing."
Uranium sighed, "Are you really confident on taking all the top Guild's strength head on?"
"Even if I die once, the losses would cripple you."
Uranium sighed, "Then, theoretically speaking, if we were to stop preventing players from accessing public places such as dungeons. You would leave us alone?"
"Precisely."
"You really know how to take big bites. I'm afraid this time you won't be able to chew."
"It matters not if it dissolves easily."
Uranium snapped, a figure appearing next to him. A grin appeared through the gaps in his helmet, "A Second Stage NPC, you should know that NPCs are stronger than players. With one at the Second Stage. I'm sure you would be quite troubled."
Travis merely unsheathed Lumen, the brilliant white sword reflecting the light. He pointed it at the NPC, "What has he offered for you to submit?"
"Hmph, I am merely paying my due."
"Is it worth your life?"
"Ha! Not even close, but flattening a bold flower is enough."
"Then you'd best flee."
"Arrogant are we?!"
They leaped forward, a dagger spinning into their hand. Swinging downwards they aimed to carve Travis into two.
Clang~~
Their eyes widened as they felt the dagger stop. It was like striking a wall! To be able to stop their dagger that easily-!
Unlike players, who where blinded by their inability to die normally, NPCs tended to catch on quick on dangerous situations. The moment their dagger stopped they realized that the opponent they were tasked to handle was more than they bargained for.
Travis kicked forward, the NPC felt like a cannon ball hit their gut. They tumbled back until slamming onto a cliff wall. Groaning they attempted to stand up, only to see their target already in front of them. A dark energy swirling in their palm.
Travis spoke with a cold tone, "I give you three seconds to leave."
They did not need further warning, scrambling to their feet they took off.
Uranium was stunned silent, dealing with a Second Stage NPC took significant effort and a large number of players to take down. Yet with only a handful of moves Dot did so easily.
Travis appeared next to Uranium, "Cease all your monopoly immediately, else you will face the consequences."
"Don't you think you're a little unreasonable?!"
"Tell me this then. How many times have you been asked that by players who wished to attempt the dungeon? If you can give me the exact amount I'll stop."
Uranium did not hesitate, "Seventy-Six."
"A random number does not suffice, that barely scratches the number of posts made on the Forum."
"Are you truly confident? In making enemies with us all?"
"You are no match for me."
"Maybe not now, but can you claim that in a week? A month? A year?"
"Are you still ignorant?"
"What?"
"You're recording this aren't you?"
". . ."
"To analyze my movements, to share my answers with physical proof. I'm not an idiot."
"And what if I am?"
"That works for me, record this well. If you do not relinquish that which belongs to the public, you will face me. If you have any objections, meet me where I first obtained the title of One Man Army. I will be there in four days. Until then, expect me to continue my actions."
"If you don't hold true to your word?"
"You act like I'm afraid, I boldly claimed that knowing you're going to share it amongst as many as possible. I'm fully expecting that, so come at me with everything. I'll shatter everything you try. Best of luck."
Travis vanished, leaving Uranium alone. The Vice-leader showed no signs of anger, instead a grin was across their face.
Lifting a finger he stopped the recording. A bit of laughter escaping his lips, "Hahaha! Dot, you won't be facing just us you know. The amount of people that want you dead. The enemies you have made! It won't just be the Top Guilds attending that day. It will be all the Guilds united to stop you! From players to summons, NPCs to monsters! I'm afraid you won't be able to beat them all before you die!"
Uranium lifted an object from his bag, an orb that gave of a menacing feel, "This Orb of Greed is far beyond the normal one. This one will set you back to the beginning"
A Legend Creating rarity item, obtaining one was incredibly difficult. Compared to the ordinary Orb of Greed, which simply amplified the death penalties, the one in Uranium's possession was far more potent.
An Orb of Gluttony, it would consume a player's entire existence upon death. Their items, their levels, their Skills. It would set a player back to level 1 with no equipment.
This item was incredibly dangerous, and far more difficult to obtain. Uranium only managed to get his hands on one by a stroke of luck. Although such an item could be considered a trump card worth saving. Uranium felt like using it to eliminate an incredibly pesky foe wasn't too bad of an option.
No matter the cost, Dot must die!
