"How long do you think it'll take him to complete the course?", Terwin asked casually.
"What's my record?", Hank answered with another question.
"Thirty seconds."
"That was with my peak performance and with ranged weapons. Considering he only has a sword. . ."
"Taking into consideration his unknown strength and the suit?"
"I can't make an accurate guess then."
"Hmm, are we almost ready?", Terwin turned his focus towards someone controlling a series of buttons.
They looked up, "We'll be good to go in five seconds."
Pressing a button to his side Terwin spoke into the mic, "There's nothing special about this test. Several targets will rise from various areas. You just have to destroy them as fast as possible."
Akiol took up a stance, silver energy crackling down the sword. Terwin looked towards the one controlling everything and nodded. A few buttons were pressed and a blaring sound traveled throughout the area.
Several targets popped from various locations. Walls rose from the ground making bare bone buildings. The targets were simple, it looked like a normal firing range almost. Akiol felt the hum of his sword and took a few seconds to gather his newly formed surroundings. His knees bent. . . and he took off.
Slicing through a target Akiol noted just how sharp the blade was. There was no resistance at all, almost like he cut through air. With this in mind he altered the way he swung his sword slightly and darted towards the next target. Slashing target after target he rapidly eliminated any in his way.
The ones responsible for analyzing data provided from these tests were stunned. This efficiency! It was comparable to someone who wielded ballistics weaponry. The rate he was taking down targets was inhuman! Was this the power provided by the prototype suits?
The final target was cut down and a high pitched beep sounded the end of the test. Akiol sheathed his blade, "Good sword."
"How long?", was the first thing Terwin asked.
". . . Forty-five seconds."
Forty-five seconds! A mere fifteen seconds above Hank's best performance! To do this with just a sword, how incredible! Not only did this prove just how powerful the suit was. It also went to show Akiol's absurd adaptation. To perform this well with no prior experience with the suit? How monstrous!
Akiol on the other hand was quite pleased with the performance with the new suit and sword. To think he could move this quick without the usage of Aura. Modern technology was something else. If he had something like this during the fight against the demon lord. . .
No point on thinking about it! With this he should be able to complete the raid. All before the fight against the undead.
Taking off the suit he placed it back in the suitcase. He went to place the sword back as well, but paused. Instead he held onto it and walked back to his temporary living quarters. Someone reached out to stop him, but Terwin grabbed his shoulder, "It's fine."
Turning to Hank Terwin asked, "Would you like to give it a try?"
"Later. Instead I want to know more about this facility."
"Alright. I'll give you the information."
. . .
"Checking in, you read?"
"Loud and clear. Any guarantees on the connection underground?"
"Negative. Hopes and prayers."
"Great."
Hank loaded several weapons, "What about you? You sure about this?"
"I wouldn't be here if I wasn't.", Akiol replied simply.
"Fair enough."
The faint click of weapons could be heard. Hank paused for a second and spoke, "From what we could tell you're just a normal civilian."
"Not nice to look into people's backgrounds."
"It only makes you more of an anomaly. But on the off-chance you truly only learned from A World's Legacy. . .", Hank prepped his final weapon, "This life isn't a good one."
"Speaking from experience?"
"Yeah."
"I think someone like you would be aware of what I mean."
Hank equipped the suit, "By what?"
"A life of paths chosen for you."
"Mh.", Hank geared up with the last of his weapons, "If there's anything I've learned from Terwin, it's even if you're given a path it doesn't mean you have to follow it."
"Even if the world is at stake?"
This unexpectedly caused Hank to laugh, "What has the world done to deserve to be saved?"
"There are people."
"Sure, but not the world. If you want to protect something, let it be the stuff you care about. No need to shoulder the weight of the selfish."
A radio voice buzzed into their ears, "We're here."
"Let's get moving. You sure that sword will be enough?"
"More than.", Akiol replied simply.
Holding the weapon in his off hand, still sheathed, Akiol joined Hank to exit a large vehicle. Landing on solid ground Akiol took a moment to close his eyes. Feeling the weight of everything he confirmed his existence.
"What are we looking at?", Hank didn't do the same and instead focused on the raid.
"Security is at its lowest, schedule change. This is as greatest as an opportunity as any.", the voice in their ears informed.
"How convenient."
"It's worth mentioning that the security being low is only minuscule. You're practically facing an army."
"Nothing new there."
"Right. Get moving else they'll pick up your signal."
Akiol opened his eyes and moved forward smoothly. The two advanced forward until a clearing came into view. The facility was located in almost a barren wasteland. Rocky terrain with hardly any wildlife created their surroundings. Rocks of various sizes served as cover, but there wasn't any near the facility. Currently Hank and Akiol were on a hill looking down at the facility. Lifting a spyglass to his eye Hank adjusted its settings and examined the entrance.
Heavy armored door almost perpendicular to the ground, guards armed to the teeth. . . Hank's brow furrowed, "Are you picking this up? What the hell is that?"
The heavy armored doors slid open and a mechanical creature stomped out. Various parts clicked and whirred, moving like scales. Its entire being looked like some sort of fantasy creature, devoid of anything that would make it human. If it wasn't so obviously man-made Hank would doubt it was from this planet.
The voice crackled in their ears, "Hold."
Akiol extended a hand towards Hank. Silently passing over the spyglass Hank watched Akiol's expression. As Akiol investigated the beast he too frowned, but for another reason.
"We have no data on this. Pull out we don't know what that is.", the voice ordered.
"Poor mimicry that's what.", Akiol answered.
"You know of it?"
"Old beast. Not one I expected to see here, nor made mechanically."
Hank eyed Akiol, "Mimicry?"
"It's stiff, probably because they can't copy that beast's efficiency. They're lacking a key component after all."
"What is it then?"
Akiol was unsure how to answer. Too much information would be given. Moreover he was still trying to figure out how exactly they managed to get their hands on that kind of information.
The mechanical creature held a stark similarity to a demonic beast from his past world. One he used to struggle fighting against. Razor sharp talons, teeth capable of tearing apart the toughest of alloys, a skin thick enough to cause any weapon to bounce off. Its design was like a cross between a raptor and a werewolf. All of it was designed to kill, for even the beast itself was a creation back then.
However this world lacked mana, a key component to that beast's existence. Without it the balance was wrong, and was significantly less of a threat. Considering this mimicry was made of metals and electronics instead of fine tuned mana creation, it was crude in Akiol's eyes.
Returning the spyglass towards Hank he said, "Can't say. However that thing isn't a threat. I'd say the suits are more dangerous. From what I could tell the weakness is underneath the jaw, right where the head and the neck meet."
The voice refuted, "Negative. Even if you know it's weakness we still don't know what else lies in there. This won't work."
"You're free to leave."
Akiol stood up and slid down the mountain. The facility wasn't in a hill, rather it more seemed like an unnatural lump in the ground. Surprise wasn't an option, too much ground to cover. With all angles open and nothing to hide his presence, it wasn't something you could take on normally.
BOOM-!
A distance explosion could be heard. Several guards looked alarmed and headed towards the explosion. Many still remained by the entrance, but the tightness of security was loosened.
The only way to properly enter. Divert enough attention and slip through the cracks. Although this time the cracks were going to be forced. Sliding the sword from its sheath a faint hum filled the air. Silver energy crackled down the blade as it vibrated intensely.
A sigh could be heard, "Fine, any sign of this getting out of hand and you're alone."
"Expected.", Akiol replied.
Gunshots could be heard, several of the guards fell. In the distance Hank lowered a rifle, "He's gonna get himself killed."
Spotting Akiol made the guards move. Raising their weapons they roared for him to leave, but each step caused them to be wary. Eventually they lost their patience and fired. Whizzing bullets flew past. Yet each step Akiol took was methodical, intentional. As if graced, not a bullet hit him. Silver Aura gently rose to the surface of the suit. Faint, yet visible. Like the suit was smoldering from something.
Akiol's foot dug into the ground slightly, and he launched forward.
