Karina, seated beside me, nodded in agreement. "Indeed. It seems rather futile. Yet, perhaps it's their way of coping."

"How long can they drown their terror in liquor?" I mused. "My guess? Not long."

She tilted her head thoughtfully. "I cannot understand them. Facing imminent death, and this is how they spend their final hours?"

I shrugged. "It's the 'live for today' mentality. They figure there's no use worrying about tomorrow."

Karina pointed toward the projection. "Oh, it seems they're finally discussing their situation."

Their drunken chatter had indeed taken a somber turn.

"This isn't working," Crafty slurred, rubbing his temples. "The more I think about dying, the faster my buzz fades."

"Even flirting with handsome actors can't keep my mind off the dragon," muttered Slobeni, her glass clinking as she set it down.
