Alex observed the shared look between the sisters, and seeing the pensive look on Vanessa's and the troubled one on Sophia, he took a guess at what they might have thought about.

It was the debts — the chunk load of debts they had inherited from their father. It had to be. They might be suspicious that the burglar was one of their creditors. Alex could swear he was right about it.

Although he had been curious to know who had sent the burglar, he had stopped the detective from telling him and insisted they get to the station first because he thought Vanessa needed to hear it from the detective first and decide whether or not it was something she wanted him to know. He didn't want her to feel embarrassed or awkward.

How much debt were they in, in the first place? Alex mused, his gaze surreptitiously shifting between the sisters.
