Kapitel 7: Chapter 7

The bustling streets of New York City were a far cry from the quiet cornfields of Iowa, but Annie January walked them with a determined stride. Her blonde hair caught the sunlight, and her bright blue eyes sparkled with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Today was the day she'd dreamed of since childhood – her official induction into The Seven, Vought's premier superhero team.

As Annie approached the towering Vought headquarters, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of anxiety. This was it – the big leagues. No more small-town pageants or local hero work. She was about to become Starlight, the newest member of the most famous superhero team in the world.

Just as she was about to enter the building, her phone buzzed. Annie's heart skipped a beat when she saw the caller ID: Clark Kent.

"Clark!" she answered, her voice a mixture of relief and joy. "I'm so glad you called. I'm just about to go in for my first day with The Seven."

"I know," Clark's warm voice came through the speaker. "That's why I'm calling. How are you feeling?"

Annie hesitated, glancing up at the imposing skyscraper before her. "Honestly? Terrified. Excited, but... God, Clark, what if I'm not cut out for this?"

"Annie," Clark said, his tone gentle but firm, "you are more than cut out for this. You're one of the strongest, kindest people I know. The Seven are lucky to have you."

As they talked, Annie found herself relaxing. Clark had always had that effect on her, ever since they were kids. He knew exactly what to say to calm her nerves and bolster her confidence.

"Just remember," Clark continued, "being a hero isn't about the costume or the team. It's about doing what's right, even when it's hard. Especially when it's hard."

Annie nodded, even though Clark couldn't see her. "I know. It's just... Vought is so big, so powerful. What if they ask me to do something I'm not comfortable with?"

There was a pause on the other end of the line. When Clark spoke again, his voice was serious. "Annie, listen to me. Your moral compass is one of your greatest strengths. Don't let anyone – not Vought, not The Seven, not anyone – make you compromise your values. If something feels wrong, it probably is."

As they continued to talk, Annie felt her resolve strengthening. Clark reminded her of all she'd accomplished, of the people she'd helped back home. He made her laugh with stories of his own awkward first days as Superman, and offered practical advice on dealing with the media spotlight.

Finally, Annie took a deep breath. "Okay. I think I'm ready."

"You've got this, Starlight," Clark said, the pride evident in his voice. "And remember, I'm always just a phone call away if you need me."

With a final word of thanks, Annie hung up and squared her shoulders. She strode into Vought headquarters with renewed confidence, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

The next few hours were a whirlwind of activity. Annie was whisked from one department to another – costume fittings, power evaluations, media training. Through it all, she tried to keep Clark's words in mind, to stay true to herself amidst the corporate glitz and glamour.

It wasn't until late afternoon that Annie finally met her new teammates. As she entered the lavish lounge reserved for The Seven, she felt her heart racing. There they were – Homelander, Queen Maeve, A-Train, The Deep, Black Noir, and Translucent. Heroes she'd idolized for years, now her colleagues.

"Well, well," Homelander said, his million-dollar smile not quite reaching his eyes. "If it isn't our newest member. Welcome to the big leagues, Starlight."

Annie straightened her shoulders, channeling every ounce of confidence she could muster. "Thank you, sir. I'm honored to be here."

As the introductions continued, Annie couldn't help but notice the undercurrents of tension in the room. The way Queen Maeve's smile seemed forced, how The Deep's eyes lingered a bit too long. It was... unsettling.

Later that evening, as Annie finally retreated to her new apartment – a luxurious space provided by Vought – she felt overwhelmed. The day had been everything she'd dreamed of, and yet... something felt off.

Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Clark:

"Hope your first day went well. Remember, being a hero isn't about being perfect. It's about always striving to do better. You've got this, Annie. I believe in you."

Annie smiled, feeling a wave of gratitude for her friend. As she got ready for bed, she made a decision. She would navigate this new world of corporate heroism, but she would do it her way. With integrity, compassion, and the unwavering moral compass that Clark had always admired in her.

Little did Annie know, her resolve would be tested sooner and more severely than she could have ever imagined.

Meanwhile, back in the Midwest, Clark Kent hovered high above the Kansas plains, his super-hearing attuned to the heartbeat of his friend in New York. He couldn't shake a feeling of unease. Something about Vought, about The Seven, had always struck him as... off.

As he floated there, watching the sun set over his beloved heartland, Clark made a silent vow. He would be there for Annie, no matter what. Because he had a feeling she was going to need all the support she could get in the days to come.

With a sonic boom, Superman took off towards Metropolis. There was work to be done, people to save. But a part of his mind remained focused on New York, on the young hero taking her first steps into a much larger, and potentially dangerous, world.

The chess pieces were moving, the stage being set for conflicts yet to come. And at the center of it all, two young heroes from the heartland of America, each trying to navigate a world that was far more complex and morally gray than they had ever imagined.

As night fell over the country, both Clark and Annie found themselves staring out windows, contemplating the paths that lay ahead. They were different in many ways – one an independent hero, the other now part of a corporate team. But they were united in their desire to do good, to make a difference.

Little did they know, the challenges they would face in the coming days would test not only their powers, but their very beliefs about what it meant to be a hero in a world that often seemed to have forgotten the true meaning of the word.
