Crisp white dress, red lips, waved hair and perfectly manicured French tips. Hyun-Joo looked as if she could be Myeong's older sister instead of her mother with all the cosmetic work she had done.

"Uh…"

"Is that any way to greet your mother?! Aren't you happy to see me!" Her mother didn't dare drop her designer bags on the ground. Instead, she managed to wrap her weighted arms around her daughter in an awkward embrace. "You've grown so much, you're pretty much a woman!" She exclaimed, taking a good long look at her teenage daughter's face and body. "You look…healthy."

Myeong didn't know how to respond and was thankful for her grandmother's interference.

"What are you doing here?!" Her grandmother furiously asked, shuffling out the front door in her pink slippers; salt and pepper hair stuck in place with a porcelain chopstick. She was tiny but years of hard work and poverty made her hard and fiery. "Ten years! You want to run off to pursue your worthless dreams of modeling and acting and now you're back!? You missed out on your daughter's life! You look ridiculous! Your lips are too big! Your face looks like it's stretched too thin over your bones. You're so tiny, I can see through you. And what's with the clothes, the bags, the hair? You have all this money but not one cent to send to your parents?!"

Hyun-Joo groaned, knowing she would have to gravel. She managed to get on her knees, careful not to rip her pantyhose as she begged for forgiveness from her mother. The neighbors started to crowd around, interested in the woman openly weeping at the feet of an elder.

"Please, Mama! Please! I'm pregnant and I don't have anywhere to go! I got into some debt but I have a plan on how to fix it! I just need a place to stay for a little bit. I promise I'll help out and I won't be a burden! I already have a job. I promise I'm not lying!"

"Pregnant?! At your age?!"

Hyun-Joo shot up, clearly offended. "I'm only 35, I'm not geriatric!"

"Um, maybe we should go inside…" Myeong offered, feeling uncomfortable as the crowd of neighbors grew. They were shameless when it came to eavesdropping.

Her grandmother shook her head in disbelief and stormed back inside, calling for her aloof husband. Hyun-Joo stumbled to her feet, balancing on the uneven dirt walkway in her thin stiletto heels. She brushed the dirt off her white dress, before entering the small home with a sigh of discontentment.

"Forgot how tiny it is…" She remarked to Myeong who followed in behind her. "Only two rooms right? You don't mind sleeping on the couch, do you dear?" Her grin was white and gleaming when she turned to face her daughter. "Think I'll make some tea…or better yet, Myeong. Can you boil some water? You know where everything in the kitchen is better than I do. I haven't been back in so long."

"Um, yeah. Sure. I can make you some tea…" Her voice trailed off as she went to set the kettle on the stove. Still in shock over her mother's sudden appearance. Her glamorous, pregnant, homeless, mother. What is even happening… she thought to herself as she lit the gas stove with a match.

"Hyun-Joo!" Her grandfather was shaken awake from his afternoon nap and couldn't have been more pleased to see his daughter. The smile on his face was genuine as he shuffled as fast as he could to hug her.

"Don't be happy to see her!" Her grandmother scolded, but her grandfather didn't listen. He embraced Hyun-Joo with all his strength. Commanding her to sit so he could hold her hand and ask her how she's been.

"She's pregnant! Again! At her age with a daughter who's about to go off to college!"

He waved off his wife who was buzzing around them like an angry hornet.

"She needs a place to stay because she can't manage her money…are you listening to me?"

"Yes, yes, I hear you but I don't care. Our little girl is back and she's so beautiful and we're going to have another grandchild." He squeezed his daughter's hand, his grin never faltering. "I always wanted more grandchildren. They're such a blessing."

The kettle started to whistle and Myeong made herself busy preparing everyone a cup of tea. All the while her grandmother was fighting against her husband's every word. She might as well be talking to a wall at that point. Exhausted, she gave up and surrendered to their new fate as Hyun-Joo bragged about her new job at Seok Corp.

"I applied for a lower position than the one I received. They said I was too qualified to work as a phone operator. I got promoted to secretary. I'll be greeting handsome businessmen all day." She giggled like a schoolgirl, clearly proud of her new career choice.

After handing out the tea, Myeong pulled up a cushion and sat around the table with her family. She noticed her mother sniffing the tea and then sitting it down without a second glance.

"Seok Corp? I applied for a phone operator job there yesterday." Myeong mentions.

"Oh?" Maybe I can put in a good word for you dear. They seem to really like me there. And the pay! Oh my….not to brag but it's extraordinary as a secretary. I'll be able to pay off my debts and get my own place in no time."

Myeong hoped that was true as she laid on the couch that night, trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Her mind was racing. Her mother moving in was the least of her worries. She kept scrolling through the calendar on her phone, the bright white screen lighting up her face. All the days after today are empty now that high school is over. Her tests were done. There was nothing left to do now but grow up. She wanted to go to University but her test scores were very disappointing. They were on the borderline of being very low, even though she studied so hard. Her testing anxiety got the best of her and she blew it.

Even if she had scored ridiculously high and every university she applied for accepted her, she wouldn't even know what to study for. Her future has always seemed hazy and so distant. Even now with adulthood and responsibility looming over her head, she couldn't make sense of any of it.

Get a job. Save money. Attend University. Have a career. Make lots of money. Take care of grandma and grandpa. She kept repeating that checklist in her head. Over and over again. It was all she could think about. But the details were still so fuzzy.

She put her phone in sleep mode, letting her reflection in the black screen stare back at her. She noticed her average features. Plumper lower lip, a dash of freckles, dark eyes, thick eyebrows. She looked nothing like her mother. The thought of it made her skin crawl as she turned onto her side to fall asleep for the night.

_____________________________________________________________

"Myeong!" Her mother called for her as soon as she walked in from the store. She kicked off her slides before entering the living room where Hyun-Joo was sitting cross-legged on the floor. Mail scattered across the coffee table in front of her. "Look what I received!" She waved a piece of paper until Myeong came over and took it.

"You're formally invited to our annual New Years' celebration at the Annex. Food…. Drinks…. Dancing…. "Myeong began to trail off while reading all the details. "That's great mom. Sounds like fun." She went to hand the paper back but her mom wasn't paying attention. She was engrossed in carefully painting her nails a bright red.

"You didn't read the best part. Family's invited. So you get to come with me! I can introduce you to the people who work at Seok Corp. Maybe get you an interview? It's been almost a month, it's about time you took getting a job there into your own hands. By schmoozing. "

Myeong let the invitation drift onto the table as she walked past. Plopping onto the couch, immediately opening her phone's empty calendar. She didn't have any other plans, but parties were not really her thing.

"I don't know, I don't have a dress or anything to wear. I'm sure everyone will be wearing expensive gowns and jewelry and…"

"I have the perfect dress for you to wear. Name brand. And I think it'll look good on you. Since you're not as thin as me you'll be able to fill out the top better. Just hoping it's not too tight on your stomach. And your thighs. But good news. It's strappy. So you don't have to worry about it fitting around your arms."

"Thanks….I think….Yeah, I don't know. I don't really enjoy crowds…"

Her mother didn't let her finish her thought. "And it's hosted by multiple corporations. The biggest corporations in the country actually! So, honestly, if you schmooze well enough, you could theoretically get a job at any of them."

"Define schmoozing."

"You know. Being charismatic. Flirting with the older gentlemen. They love that stuff. They're all perverts."

"Gross. What else?"

"Telling the older women how young and beautiful they look. Complimenting their outfits."

"Sounds tedious."

"It's easy. You just laugh at every joke they tell, even if it's not funny and you'll have them eating out of the palm of your hand."

"Love that imagery." She teased. But deep down she felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe she could be enticing and enjoyable. All because she was bullied at school, doesn't mean that people in the real world wouldn't like her. She could start a new chapter. Be confident and seductive. Land her dream job by making friends in high places.

"And…" Her mother continued, not missing a beat."... the food there is catered by some of the best restaurants in the city and it's all free."

~~~~~~
The dress was tight on Myeong, but her grandmother claimed it was tight in all the right places. That men like to see curves on a woman. But overall, the dress looked stunning. Myeong couldn't help but admire herself. Her back was exposed for the first time in her life. And her breasts filled out the top better than expected. The bottom flowed around her like an upside-down lily. The red fabric sparkled in the light and her mother found the perfect round diamond earrings to pair with it. After her hair was loosely curled and her mother added the finishing touches to her make-up, Myeong was excited to reveal her new look to her grandpa.
"Are you ready?" She asked. "Open your eyes. I look like a different person." She gave a twirl, letting the fabric lift around her.
Her grandfather opened his eyes and his smile couldn't have been brighter. "You look like an empress. Oh my, you're going to have a marriage proposal by the end of the night looking like that!" He gave her a tight squeeze and held it. "I don't think I can let you go, I don't want you to run off with some rich businessman and leave me here all alone. Who will help me with my Sudoku puzzles? The old woman is useless when it comes to numbers."
Her grandmother slapped him in the back of his balding head. "Hey! I manage the household funds just fine, old man." She shot back.
Myeong kissed her grandfather's forehead before wiggling free from his protective grasp. "Don't worry Grandpa, I'm not going to be getting married anytime soon. I promise."
Her mother rented a luxury car to take them to the party. The inside smelled like new leather and the driver wore white gloves.
"How much did this cost?" She whispered to her mom as she shut the door.
Her mother smiled. "Don't worry about it. I have it covered." She redirected her attention to the driver who was staring at them in the rearview mirror. "To the Annex, please."
"Yes, Ma'am." He replied, pulling away from the curb.
The deeper they drove into the city, the more nervous Myeong was becoming. Tapping her fingers on the door handle to avoid chewing on them. She could see the spotlights before she saw the building. Her mother pointed them out with excitement.
The Annex itself was a colossal building. A remarkable example of modern architecture, strung with holiday lights and spotlights danced around it. Letting people know where the party was. The entrance reminded Myeong of a movie premiere. There was a red carpet, photographers, a news station, beautiful people wearing extravagant dresses and jewels. Her stomach really started to flutter at the sight. But her mother couldn't have been more excitable and ready.
The inside was even more beautiful. Led lights casted a purple hue on the black marble dance floor of a large circular ballroom. There were grand staircases leading to the multiple floors. The ceiling was all glass, showing the satellites as they passed across the night sky. Myeong was in awe. It felt like she was in a fairy tale. The lowly servant girl going to a ball.
The smell of food caught her attention. There were multiple tables loaded with food to create an extravagant buffet. A whole roasted pig was right in the middle, surrounded by delicacies. Ice sculptures of swans sat in the punch bowls. Waiters walked around with large silver trays laced with sugar-rimmed cocktails and roasted weenies on toothpicks. Myeong's fluttering stomach turned into a growling beast at the sight.
Her mother had already run off, waving at co-workers and forcing her way into their conversations. Perfect. She could eat all she wanted without judgment from her mother. She scanned the tables of food, almost running into a guy her age who was stacking a glass plate high with roasted chicken wings.
"Sorry!" He bowed as he spun around her. "I was distracted." He pointed dramatically to his chicken wings and Myeong let out a laugh.
"I understand!" She replied through chuckles. "And you're forgiven."
He flashed her a toothy grin. His hair gel was failing at its job and loose strands had fallen over into his eyes. His shirt was unbuttoned a bit, revealing wire headphones draped around his neck.
"Better grab some because I'll take them all."
He winked at her before hailing down a waitress with a drink tray. Leaving Myeong a little flustered. She never had someone so attractive wink at her before. And he seemed like he meant it. When she looked up again he had disappeared into the crowd.
The night dragged on and Myeong was painfully full after an entire evening of food sampling. There wasn't much else for her to enjoy. The dance floor was crammed with bodies. The music was so loud it made her ears feel fuzzy as she stood on the outskirts of the ballroom. Everyone her age was out there, grinding on each other, sweating, laughing, embracing…she felt a surge of loneliness as she watched them.
She decided to search for her mother and ascended one of the grand staircases. The upper floors were more peaceful. It was all older people sitting or standing around, chit-chatting about being rich and influential. Things Myeong couldn't relate to.
Her mother's overexaggerated laugh carried across the room and her head of sleek black hair was easy to find. Myeong came from behind as her mother tried her best to flirt with an older man whose beard was turning white.
"Oh! This is my daughter, Myeong. She just graduated and is looking to start her career early. She wants to get a head start in the business world after she graduates from University." Her mom paused for just a brief moment before adding a lie to spice things up. "She got accepted into business school."
Myeong shot her a subtle look. "Mom, you're embarrassing me." She hissed through a grin. She had no idea what business schools were prestigious and dreaded someone asking her about which one. Luckily, everyone used this as an opportunity to talk about themselves and their children's achievements.
Myeong nodded enthusiastically as the older man talked her ear off about his three ambitious sons. "Speak of the devil!" The man chuckled and started waving furiously for someone to join the conversation. "It's my youngest son! He's around your age. Okay, a little older. He just turned twenty. Jeong!" He called. His breath smelled like straight bourbon as he yelled.
She half expected the guy from earlier to appear, or rather she hoped. But she was still satisfied when a young man with bleach blond hair, an angular jawline, and a smudge of eyeliner around his dark eyes appeared. He wore his suit loose and fitted it with a clean pair of white sneakers. He nodded at her, shamelessly letting his eyes linger on her chest. A smirk played on his lips. "I'm Jeong."
She was almost too flustered to introduce herself. "I-I'm.." She cleared her throat a bit. "I'm Myeong…"
Her mother managed to focus the attention back on herself, all while discreetly pushing Myeong towards Jeong with a bony elbow. Myeong felt her cheeks turn pink and hoped her blush was dark enough to hide it.
"So, are you having fun?" Jeong asked, sipping from a short glass of brown liquor garnished with a lime.
"Yeah, uh, it's my first time here. It's…a little insane. In a good way though!" She corrected, not wanting to offend him."I just…I don't really dance or drink or…well not never. I'm just not used to being at a party this…large…" She was rambling and didn't know how to stop herself.
It made him chuckle, his smirk growing sharper at the corners. "Yeah. I'm not much of a crowd person." He admitted. "Maybe we should ditch?"
She stared at him, not understanding what he meant. "Ditch?" She asked, feeling like a total square as he laughed. Clearly amused.
"Yeah, let's go exploring. This place is huge. This party isn't even a quarter of the space it can hold. Come on. I'll show you." He finished his drink in a final gulp, letting out a satisfied gasp after. He set it on an end table and hooked his arm around hers. Leading her away from everyone.
Her blush felt like a fever at this point. He was so close to her. She could smell his cologne. The oil and musk coming from the mist of sweat that had formed on the back of his neck, his throat, his chest that peeked through the open buttons at the top.
His closeness made her aware of her own body, how her breasts bounced with each hurried step they made. The way her curls brushed against her arm and collar bone. She wondered if she smelled good to him.
"This way. There's a place I want to show you." He opened a discreet white door that led to emergency stairs. "We're going down." Still arm and arm they raced down the stairs. She was thankful for wearing flats at this moment.
"Where are we going?" She managed to say in between hushed laughs.
"You'll see." He responded, grabbing her by the hand and pulling her along. "Follow me. You'll love it I promise."
They reached a long dark hallway that began to light up as they ran down it. It smelled like chlorine and bleach. He opened a set of heavier double doors and revealed with pride a heated inside pool.
"This pool is huge!" She exclaimed. Her whole house could easily fit inside of it.
"There's a whole fitness center down here. For people with memberships or guests that stay here. The other side of the annex is a hotel with conference rooms. What we were in, it was just the ballroom portion."
She started to walk around the pool, looking at her reflection in the dimly lit waters. His reflection joined her and to her surprise, he reached out to graze her shoulder with his fingers. She smiled back at him. This felt like a dream.
"Let's go sit down." His voice was a smoky whisper as his fingers caressed the top of her shoulder. She could smell the alcohol on his breath as he leaned in closer. Her stomach somersaulted.
"Okay…" She whispered back.
She let him lead her to the white wooden bleachers that were built into the wall. He sat down at an angle against the side but instead of letting her sit beside him, he guided her on top of his lap. His hands found her hips, raising her dress enough at the side so she could straddle him. She followed blindly. Her breath was shallow as she felt his erection straining against the fabric of his pants. It rested against her underwear under her dress.
Her body was on fire as hands slid up to her waist, holding her in place. She became aware of how tight his grasp was. Digging into her skin until it began to feel bruised. She squirmed in discomfort but was too shy to speak up.
"Are you thirsty?"
She was caught off guard by the question. Before she could reply he slid a flask from the inside of his suit coat.
"It's sweet."
That was all he said as he used his teeth to loosen the top so he could keep a hold of her. Aggressively spitting the cap across the concrete to get rid of it. He pressed the flask to her lips.
"Drink."
He tilted it until the liquid slid between her lips and down her throat. The sugar-coated her tongue and after she swallowed is when she felt the burn of alcohol. She suppressed a cough, wanting to seem tougher than she was.
"Good?"
He was looking up at her, waiting for her reaction. She nodded. Words failing her. Her stomach flutters were turning into nauseous waves as he pressed the flask to her lips again, forcing more liquor into her mouth. She tried to swallow quickly so she wouldn't choke. He felt her body struggle against his grasp and let her take a deep breath, pulling the flask back with a bemused smirk.
"Good girl."
He set the flask down beside him so he could hold her again with both hands. He was becoming adventurous now with his touches. His hands ran up the sides of her breast, firmly grasping and lifting them. She felt his erection twitch against her groin. She felt frozen in place.
"I knew I was going to have fun with you." He let her breasts drop, hissing out a satisfied sigh at the sight. "Let's go swimming." His hands reached behind her neck and began to pull at the strings of her dress. His fingers were quick and the top of her dress fell. The fabric barely clinging to her breast when her body finally decided to react.
Her arm immediately went to cover her chest. He seemed shocked at her reaction.
"No…" She didn't sound confident. She didn't feel confident. She felt squirmy. Her skin was crawling. Her heart was racing, thumping unevenly inside her chest as his grip on her waist became painful again. She could feel the outline of his fingernails as he gripped her with a purpose.
"Don't be shy." He laughed at her fear. "You'll loosen up here in a bit. Come on. Let me see them. Don't be a tease. You'll ruin our fun. We're having fun."
"I'm..sorry. I wasn't expecting it to go this far. I think I should go…"
She went to stand up but he pulled her back down with his tight grip. She started to fight him while keeping her chest covered.
"Let me go. Please. I just want to go."
"Fine."
With that, he pushed her off. She landed on the concrete, on her side. The wind knocked out of her from the shock. She didn't have long to process it and catch her breath when she was kicked onto her back.
"What are you…?!"
He was on top of her, grabbing her arms and pinning them to her sides. His legs kept her lower body pinned. Her chest was now fully exposed. Her screams were guttural as they escaped her lungs.
"Go ahead and tire yourself out. You'll start to calm down any moment now. The more you struggle, the faster the drug works." His knowing smile made her uneasy.
"What drug?" Tears were starting to flood her eyes. "What are you talking about? Why are you doing this?" A desperate sob escaped her. Her head started to feel fuzzy. Her body was lighter.
It was easy for him to pin her arms above her head with one hand now. His other hand took to roughly groping her breasts. The sensation made her queasy as he pulled on one of her nipples. The pain scorched her nerves. She screamed against her gritted teeth as the world around her started to wave and shift. His lips encased a nipple bud, sucking on it hard enough for her skin to pull. She continued to put up a fight. Doing her best to buck her hips and push him off.
"I'm getting annoyed." He warned. Staring her down.
She met his gaze with defiance. A tear streamed from her eye and down the side of her cheek as she mustered all her remaining strength and clarity to piss him off even worse.
"Fuck you."
She spat on him. The wad of spit landed right in his open mouth. He reflectively let go of her to wipe his mouth, cursing and crying out in disgust.
She took this opportunity to roll away from him, her body teetering on the edge of the pool. She thought she had a chance of escaping as she crawled for her life. Pulling her dress down further each time she slid her knees across the concrete. She tried to stand but her body collapsed under the weight. Her vision was now undeniably impaired. The world spun around her. She felt so tired. She felt someone grab her waist, pulling her back. With one last effort to save herself, she lurched forward away from the grasp, diving headfirst into the darkness that was racing to meet her.
Her whole body felt warm. Her lungs were hot. Her throat was full. She was floating. Her world went dark.
