It’s hard to go about my day like a normal person when my heart is heavy.

I killed Kline.

But I did more than that.

I took his future, his ambitions, his desires. I took a son from his mother and a shifter from Ganymede.

Looking up from my plate, I catch my mother smiling gently at me. I’m sure her motherly ways know the strife I’m going through, but all I can think about is Kline’s mother and the pain she must be suffering. Last I heard, Yoseph accepted trial for his betrayal, and Kline’s mother left.

Yet, I sit here and eat off expensive china at Maverick’s lavish mansion.

Or, well, it’s my mansion, too, since I’ve moved in with him.

Before I can dive further into my guilt, a warm hand finds mine. I look up and find Maverick staring intently at me, his brows furrowed and concern in his gaze. I smile tightly back and turn away.

I really am my own worst enemy, but I don’t feel I deserve him. Or any happiness.
