Kapitel 31: Success or Failure?

Kai was concentrated while in the process of making his potion. He didn't want to fail and get a bad grade. But he also wanted that 1 point in Wisdom. It would make him go to 19 in total, meaning he would only need one left to get to the threshold to become an Acolyte.

The first ingredient he placed inside the cauldron was the Nebula Left. Among the four ingredients used in the potion, that was the easiest one to manage.

'Now I should place the Fire Seed next and heat up to 200 degrees.'

Kai gently tossed the Fire Seed inside the cauldron after the Nebula Leaf was completely heated up, turning into a liquid.

There were many types of Fire Seed in the world. The one Kai had was a low-grade and weak one, but it still had immense value in the potion. According to the book, the Fire Seed would melt and give the weaker ingredients more resistance to higher temperatures.

So, melting the Fire Seed inside the cauldron was the easiest part, but the forth ingredient would be the worse. Before moving on, Kai looked around him, seeing all the students concentrated, trying their best to make the potion.

Some of them had failed because they did it too fast. Jane gave them a lot of time to produce the potion, and she did not give them any benefit if finishing first. There was no reason to rush.

In fact, rushing was the worst thing one could do while making a potion. To become an Alchemist, patience was a virtue one needed to master.

Kai, being way older than anyone there, had that virtue. He was not rushing like the teenagers.

'My almost fifty years of age paid off,' he thought.

The cauldron didn't explode when he heated up the Fire Seed, and the liquid had the color it was supposed to have, according to the recipe Kai had in hands. That was a good sign.

Kai read the recipe, passing his finger through the lines to get a good understanding of the next ingredient. It was called Grappling Horns. Based on all the ingredients there, the horn was the hardest to get. Kai had learned about beasts with Luke, and the beast with that kind of horn was a powerful one.

The horn required an even higher temperature to melt. Kai was scared of messing things up and burning the other ingredients. He got even more nervous when Jane started walking through the classroom and stopping beside him to get a better look at his cauldron.

"You are doing great," Jane said.

Jane also gave words of encouragement to other students, so Kai was not the one getting all the attention, which was good. A few students were doing it all wrong, and Jane had to correct them before things started blowing up inside the classroom.

The real danger lied in the fourth ingredient.

'Sprayed Spinning Irons.'

A stinger from a beast Kai had no understanding off. The problem with that ingredient was the process to melt it, and the side-effects of doing it wrong.

Kai needed 180 degrees to melt the stinger, but after the stinger melted, the poison would come out of it, mixing with the potion. Then, he had to lower the flame to 140 degrees, and keep it like that for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. If he missed it for one second, everything would go to waste.

Therefore, Kai had his pocket-watch in hands before the stinger melted, already calculating the exact time. When the stinger melted, Kai had the exact time in mind.

He lowered the flame, and checked his watch to make sure everything went according to plan. A few students stopped what they were doing to watch him.

"Kai is in the last part of the potion. I want to see if so that I can have a better understanding before trying," one of the students said.

They all shared a similar thought. Jane didn't make the potion in front of them because that would give them an advantage. But she never said that they couldn't watch their fellow students while making the potion.

Kai became the main focus. Even Jane was watching him and cheering for his success inside her mind. They were family.

As for Kai, well, he got tense. Everyone was looking at him, and that got him nervous, but his mind was still focused on his watch and the flame. The time was ticking, and when it hit 3 minutes and 22 seconds, Kai turned off the flame.

He couldn't be sure that everything he did was the correct way of doing it. Jane had to be the one analyzing the contents of his cauldron to see if the potion was a success or a failure.

Jane walked over to his cauldron. She saw the liquid, its form and smell, its consistency. Everything was analyzed before giving an answer to Kai. It took her two minutes.

"Congratulations," she said, "You passed. This potion was masterfully brewed, which is a rare thing for a new student. Now, let's bottle it up."

Jane walked over to her table, bringing back a glass vial. She helped Kai get all the liquid inside the vial.

"There are still liquids inside the cauldron," Kai asked.

"Indeed. We can bottle them and sell them. You can't drink more than one potion, so you should at least make some money out of it."

They placed the remaining liquid into more flasks, giving a total of 8 potions. Kai would get 50% of the profit after selling them. Jane needed a cut to pay for the ingredients Kai got for free.

He was not angry because of that. The idea of getting a profit out of that class was already incredible to him.

The other students continued making their potions, and it was Kai the one watching. Trevor was having a difficult time, but there was nothing Kai could do to help him.
