Kapitel 6: Firefight

The smell of burning foliage mixed with the sharp scent of blaster scorch marks filled the air. The jungle was alive with chaos—trees collapsing, underbrush igniting as the battle raged. The Separatist droids were relentless, their metal forms gleaming in the flickering firelight as they pressed forward.

I slammed my back against a rock outcropping, panting hard as I tried to reload my blaster. My hands trembled, not from fear but from the fatigue that had been gnawing at me for hours. We were down to our last clips. And worse than that, we were running out of time.

"Spark!" I shouted into the comm. "We need to regroup, now!"

I could hear blaster fire in the background before Spark's voice crackled through. "Trying, Sarge! But they're pushing hard! Lucky's pinned—he can't move!"

Pinned? Of course, he was. The droids were everywhere now, more than I could count, pushing us deeper into the jungle, into the fire. I glanced around the burning ravine. If Lucky was pinned, we wouldn't last much longer. We had to move.

I forced my legs into motion, charging through the smoke and wreckage toward Lucky's position. The acrid air stung my lungs, but I didn't stop. He was close, and I wasn't going to leave another brother behind.

There, pinned behind a tree that had half-collapsed into the ravine, was Lucky. He was trying to fire around the massive trunk, but the droids had the area locked down with heavy suppressive fire.

I dove behind the tree, slamming into the ground next to him. "I got you, Lucky," I said between breaths. "We've gotta fall back."

"I can't move," Lucky grunted, clutching his side. A quick glance showed the problem—a piece of shrapnel from an explosion had lodged itself in his armor, and while it wasn't fatal, it had slowed him down.

"I'll cover you," I said. "You move when I say."

He hesitated, then nodded.

I peeked around the edge of the tree, locking onto the nearest B1 droids and laying down a quick volley of suppressive fire. I hit two of them, watching their mechanical forms collapse, but more were pushing through the smoke.

"Now!" I shouted, and Lucky moved, dragging himself toward the thicker cover of the rocks nearby.

I kept firing, the heat from my blaster growing unbearable, but I didn't stop until I was sure Lucky had made it to safety.

Then the blaster overheated. I threw it aside in frustration. The jungle was lit with flames, the shadows of advancing droids dancing through the smoke like phantoms. I had nothing left.

But I couldn't stop. My squad—what was left of them—needed me.

I grabbed a spare blaster from the ground, moving to regroup with Spark and Lucky. As I pushed forward, dodging fire, the words of our fallen brothers echoed in my mind. Tread. Gear. Pax. I wasn't going to let this be the end.

"On your left, Sarge!" Spark shouted through the comms, and I ducked just as a blaster bolt sizzled past me. Spark was behind a nearby ridge, holding the line with what little ammo he had left.

I slid into cover next to him, breathless. "We're almost out," I said grimly. "Ammo, energy, everything."

"Yeah, I noticed," Spark replied, voice tight with exhaustion. "What's the plan? They'll overrun us any minute now."

I didn't have an answer. I looked around, taking in the carnage, the burning trees, the relentless advance of the droids. The Republic wasn't coming. This was it.

Unless…

My eyes drifted up, toward the canopy of the jungle, where the fires hadn't reached yet. The trees were massive, their thick trunks forming natural pillars high above us. If we could get higher ground, we might be able to escape the droids or at least stall them long enough to buy us some time.

"We go up," I said, the idea forming in my mind even as I spoke. "The droids aren't made for climbing, and the trees will give us better cover. If we get high enough, we can slow them down."

Spark glanced up, then back at me. "You serious? You want to climb that?"

"It's the only shot we've got," I said, already moving. "Lucky, you good to climb?"

Lucky grunted through the comms, limping over to join us. "As long as I don't get shot again, yeah."

"We make for that tree," I said, pointing to the largest one nearby. "It's thick enough to give us cover, and if we can get to the top, we might be able to signal for evac."

The others didn't argue. We didn't have time to. The droids were closing in, their mechanical footsteps drawing closer through the smoke. We moved as one, sprinting for the base of the tree, firing over our shoulders as we went.

Blaster bolts zipped past us, and I could hear the dull thud of another B2 droid advancing behind the smaller ones. They were going to hit us hard, but we didn't have a choice.

When we reached the tree, I slung my blaster over my shoulder and grabbed the thick bark, pulling myself up. The others followed, using the vines and natural ridges of the trunk to scale it. The tree groaned under our weight, but it held.

We climbed, higher and higher, until the chaos of the battle below started to fade. The canopy of the jungle loomed above us, and with it, a glimmer of hope. If we could just hold out a little longer…

We reached a thick branch, high above the ground, and I pulled myself onto it, gasping for air. The others joined me, and for a moment, we just sat there, catching our breath, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle.

Below, the droids were searching, their sensors scanning the area. But they hadn't found us yet. We had bought ourselves some time.

"We're not done yet," I said, my voice hoarse. "But we'll make it out of here."

Spark nodded, staring down at the battle below. "We've lost too much, Sarge. Too many brothers."

"I know," I said quietly. "But we can't stop now."

I looked up, through the canopy, to the sky above. Somewhere out there, the Republic was still fighting. And as long as we kept moving, as long as we kept fighting, we still had a chance.
