"Take a piece of flexible green wood," explained Fael, "Attach a string to it, and you can launch those things a great distance. Even uphill, it's farther than we can throw our javelins downhill."

"A shield would be quite handy right now," Aeldor remarked.

"Are we just going to stand here and endure this?" I questioned.

"I doubt it. Most likely—" Fael began, but was cut off by the drum.

"I recognize that beat," I said.

"'Live Fully,'" Fael identified. "We're going to charge them."

"Oh, good," I responded.

"Any other ideas?" she asked, standing but remaining bent over.

I waited for the order to charge, aware that if I got myself killed in this manner, it would not only be a nuisance to me but also irritate Drevolan for risking myself instead of doing my job. There was no good reason for me to be here. I glanced at Aeldor and saw he was looking at me. I managed a half-smile and turned my eyes back to the enemy.
