Kapitel 18: Killing a Higher Ranked Beast
The beast did not relax as it continued its assault on Lin. Lin pushed his powers to the max and began moving around like a phantom. With every claw attack, claws made of shadows appeared and attacked Lin from all sides. "How do I get rid of these shadows? They keep popping up all around me. Since shadow elementals can manipulate the shadows around, fighting near plants like this is disadvantageous for me since there are practically shadows everywhere" As he thought, he saw a shadow that looked like a wisp move from the creature to the shadow of a nearby plant.
The wisps quickly grew to take the shape of the plant's shadow and then turned into claws and pounced towards Lin. As Lin saw this, his face brightened as he leapt away from the beast. He realised no more shadows attacked him until the beast reached him. "As I thought. Shadow element users do not manipulate other shadows; instead, they create and hide their shadows within the shadows created by objects and make it look like they are manipulating the shadows around. In that case…"
The fire around Lin exploded, driving the beast backwards and destroying the shadows around. "…If I create a fire zone, it would destroy the wisps before they merge with the shadows around. That way, it would lose its advantage here and can only create shadows for head-on attacks, which means no more surprise attacks. For me, that is enough. Time for a counterattack."
The fire around Lin increased in intensity as he began to send it in all directions. He created a two-hundred-meter fire zone. Though the fire in the zone was not powerful enough to gravely wound the beast, it dealt with the shadow wisps. Lin dashed at the beast and began punching it fiercely. He moved around the beast like a ghost and struck it with all his strength. There was no room for hesitation or holding back.
The beast also responded in kind. The two battled for a long time. Lin now had several claw marks all over his body. He was wounded and bled severely, but that did not deter him. He kept pushing himself and battled the beast on equal grounds. None was winning. Now it had turned into a battle of endurance. The last man standing wins. The beast was now creating lots of shadows directly since it had lost its element of surprise attacks.
Every shadow that came forth was either burned or destroyed by lightning. Black fire and lightning erupted from the battleground as the beast was zapped and burned by every punch Lin delivered. "This may be a battle of endurance; I'm starting to feel the strain of overexerting myself. I would have to finish this as quickly as possible."
Lin screamed to the sky and exploded with lightning and fire that covered the battlefield. The beast also exploded with shadow powers as it felt the powerful explosion coming towards it. Shadow and lightning with fire clashed. Lin's elemental powers overpowered that of the beast and struck it. The beast was covered in blazing flames and wildly cackling lightning.
It froze momentarily. Seizing the opportunity, Lin delivered a powerful attack. "I am going to have to burn this beast to crisps. With my self-taught skill"
<Focused Fire attack: Jet Flame>
Lin punched the beast with both arms at once, releasing a jet of fire that burned everything in its path. Before the beast could shake off the stunning effect of the lightning, the flames were already upon it. It tried moving but its limbs were burned so badly it dropped to the floor. Lin continued to shoot out as much flame as he could until the beast stopped moving.

"Huff! Huff! Huff!" He dropped to the ground and panted heavily. He had so many wounds you could barely see unharmed skin anymore. He moved to the beast and put it into his space storage cube.

"My storage is almost full and my clothes are torn. Looks like I have to go back and get changed before coming back. I have to find a place to rest for a while before I leave. Maybe I should kill a few low-ranked beasts to fill up my storage." He walked away from the battlefield and towards the territory exit.
In a room in a dilapidated 6-storey apartment building, a man walked towards a mirror in the room wearing blue trousers with a blue patterned long-sleeved top and shoes. The room was not in good condition. The walls were all faded and rats were scurrying around in the ceiling. There was only a table and chair with a single bed in the room but the clothes were neatly arranged and hung on the wall. There was also a poorly-looking bathroom and toilet and several eviction notices on the table.
A man banged loudly on the door and called the occupant, "Lin, get the hell out here this instant." He kept banging on the door like a maniac. Lin frowned when he heard the man's voice. "Tch! This man won't give up, would he? How did he even know I was back when I practically sneaked in?" he walked towards the door and peeped through the keyhole.
Two heavily built men stood behind a fifty-year-old man in a bathrobe. The man had an eyepatch over his left eye and looked quite skinny. Due to the eyepatch over his eye most called him 'Eyepatch'. Lin could tell at a glance the two men behind the man were ranked higher than he was. "Hey Lin, I know you are in there; get out this minute else, I'm breaking down this door" the man yelled again which made Lin jump back.
"Damn it. I can't stay in here. If he breaks down that door, there's no doubt he is kicking me out and taking my stuff. I have only been able to live here without being kicked out because I have something that he wants. He always came alone too but today it seems he wants to drive me out by force" Lin ran to a window and looked down. He was on the fifth floor of the apartment building.
He picked up his bag and ran towards the open window. As soon as he jumped out, the door was blown off. Wood debris went flying in all directions. The man looked around the empty room, surprised to discover Lin's absence. He soon noticed the open window and fumed, "That despicable bastard… He went out through the window. Quick, after him" The two men jumped out of the window and went after Lin.
