Augustus didn't want to be here. Shopping for his wedding. The word wedding left a bitter taste in his mouth. They were not supposed to be doing shopping that day. But due to an emergency on Norman's end, the wedding was to be held earlier. The wedding was supposed to be held on 5th of July. But now it would be held on 27th of June. Considering it was 12th of June already, both families were in quite a hurry. The date of wedding was just announced publicly yesterday through a press meet. Augustus had to leave some of his important works to come here for choosing his wedding suit. The designer had already took his measurements. But he was held up here now to choose the design of Scarlette's wedding dress.
As if he has any interest to think about what suited her. Augustus thought bitterly.
Augustus looked at the girl in question. He didn't know what to do with this girl. She was literally driving him up the wall. Here she was flouncing around with Charlotte and Lucy practically attached to her hip. He had never felt so dumbfounded as he felt that night at the party. A shudder ran down his back everytime he thought of what had happened that night.
*Flashback*
Augustus was eating and listening to Jason talking about his latest case. Suddenly, he felt a tickling feeling on his left leg as if a cat was rubbing its head on his leg. His body tensed and he stopped listening.
What the fuck? Augustus thought.
Scarlette was on his left. He subtly looked at her on his left only to find her engrossed in a conversation with Charlotte.
Maybe it's just my imagination. He thought then.
Again, he feel that rubbing sensation. Augustus was now sure that he wasn't imagining it. He looked at Scarlette but she wasn't even looking at him. As if feeling his stare, she turned to him and raised an eyebrow. That too much of a innocent look on her face was enough to prove to him that she was the one who had done that and purposefully. She gave him an innocent smile that wasn't innocent in any way to hell and her eyes were dark and sparkling with something akin to a mixture of anger and satisfaction. Augustus' blood almost boiled at her smile. But his anger didn't stop what was going on under the table. She was still rubbing her bare foot on the backside of his calf. Jason had stopped talking by then and watching the interaction between Augustus and Scarlette.
Augustus started feeling uncomfortable. He couldn't for the life of him understand as to why she was doing this. Why was she looking at him like he murdered her favourite cat? The answer dawned on him like the answering of one's prayer falling from the sky.
So, this her form of revenge for what happened in the hallway. But honestly speaking, it wasn't his fault that she felt snooping on him like that after him clearly warning her not to is a good thing. Augustus thought savagely.
He didn't know until later how much he underestimated her.
After dinner, some people started to sit in a more informal way and others walking around. The reporters had left after dinner as their work was done.
Augustus was talking to his 'friends' after the dance. They were his college friends but not so close. But only one of them, Benjamin, was close enough with him to see him at his lowest. Benjamin was the popular boy of the college; your typical popular hotshot boy with a funny sense of humour. He was a loud mouth and cheerful guy. He was the complete opposite of Augustus who had a dark sense of humour and even though he was witty, he had only talked a few words to people all his college life. He and Benjamin weren't that close until at post graduation they both were in the same university. Those four years had shown through both of them more than ever and they practically became brothers. Benjamin or rather Ben, which he liked to be called was the only one who understand Augustus more than his family. And in lieu of that, Augustus was the only person in this universe who was allowed to call him Benji, despite him hating that nickname.
"So Gus, when are you gonna introduce us to your lovely fiancé." Benjamin was the one to ask.
Augustus groaned. But before he could reply, one of his friends exclaimed,
"She's coming here."
Augustus looked up and indeed Scarlette was walking towards them. He really wasn't in the mood to deal with her. After all that she did this night, he wasn't sure how long he could tolerate her. But there was no going back now. She was standing right before him and looked at him expectantly.
She is definitely planning something. She's gonna a fool of herself and possibly make me look like a fool too.
Again he was stopped before he could open his mouth to say something.
"Are you not going to introduce me to your friends, darling?" Scarlette said in a innocent voice.
Augustus looked at her shocked as his friends started choking on their drinks. Augustus glared at her to stop but she ignored his glare and continued.
"Hi. I'm Scarlette Matthew. I'm his fiancé...."
As she said this, she put a hand on Augustus' shoulder. Augustus' friends almost again choked on their drinks.
"...Nice to meet you all."
All his friends said hello and shook hands with her and the whole time Scarlette kept her left hand on Augustus' shoulder. One look at his face confirmed Scarlette that he was where she wanted him. Angry and uncomfortable. She gave herself a mental pet at her success before starting the main act of the night.
"Oh. Is this your glass? I'm feeling so thristy."
Scarlette moved infront of Augustus and too close for comfort for both of them to grab Augustus' wine glass. She brought it to her lips and emptied the half filled wine glass in one gulp. She felt it burning down her throat which indicated it was whiskey. She felt dizzy for a moment. She already had two glasses of the red wine served during dinner. Hers and Charlotte's as she wasn't of age. Scarlette herself had drunk wine only twice. The first time on her birthday as she turned eighteen and the second time was with friends. But those times she only drank one glass. Scarlette put the glass down on the counter. She then looked at Augustus who looked completely shocked at her casual behaviour. On the other hand, his friends were gaping at her openly. Scarlette felt a rush of satisfaction at their reactions.
"It was really nice to know that he has some friends. Seeing as how grumpy he is, it's a wonder. By the way, I need to go now. I expect to see you all at the wedding. So please come."
After the pleasantries, Scarlette made her way to where Charlotte was. On her way back, she looked back at Augustus, who was already looking at her, and winked at him. The stunned expression they all wore and Augustus' face turning to red while he glared at her was like a balm soothing her wounds. The feeling of victory making her mood thousands times better.
Silence ensued among the friends sitting at the bar.
"I like her."
Augustus looked at Benjamin at his statement and glared at him. Only Benjamin had the enough hold over Augustus to say something like that as casually as he did. The others were totally silent watching the interaction between them.
"What?" Benjamin asked casually.
Augustus just glared at him. Benjamin sighed.
"No need to look like that. She's a daring bird. Though I don't know if she knows what she was doing or not. Then she's either incredibly smart or superbly dumb. But either way I like her attitude. "
Augustus continued to glare at him for the rest of the night without saying anything.
*Flashback ended*
Augustus sighed. That had been his worst night ever. When he had first seen and talked to her, she seemed like a sufferer in silence type girl. But it proved that you should never really judge a book by its cover. Augustus came out of his reverie when his aunt Jennifer shook his arm. He looked at her to see her pointing at some gown designs.
"Say, Augustus. Which one would you think would suit Scarlette?" Jennifer asked him.
Augustus looked down at the design book. There was many gown style shown. He took the book from his aunt and looked through it quickly. His aunt was a persistent one. She would not give up until she had what she wanted. A trait that Jason had got. None of the designs appealed to him. He turned to the last page and stopped. There was a full sleeve white gown. The bodice was embroidered with a belt at the waist. The gown puffed out from the waist to the floor. The material was silk and sheer lace. It was simple, elegant and beautiful.
"Good choice. You have such a good taste, Augus. Let me go and see how much Scarlette likes it."
Jennifer went to Scarlette who was talking with Lucy and Charlotte on hushed tones. Augustus narrowed his eyes on her.
What is she up to now? He thought.
Augustus could control his emotions quite well. But it seemed whenever the situation was related to Scarlette he just couldn't control his anger. He didn't understand this, which made him get angrier. Even though, this time it was directed towards himself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scarlette looked up at Jennifer calling her name. She was standing near the back of the store with Charlotte and Lucy. Not because of looking for her wedding dress or bridesmaids dresses. Rather looking for the answer of the question that had been bugging both the sisters since the party. Why did Norman call Augustus his son infront of the media? They were quite surprised to know that Norman and Jennifer had actually adopted Augustus as theirs, though Augustus insisted on calling them uncle and aunt in private. After much argument between them about how to call and address them in private, Augustus relented to call them by their names. That cleared up the confusion about their relationship.
"Scarlette, Scarlette. "
Scarlette looked at Jennifer.
"Yes."
"Look. Do you like this design? This dress would look nice on you. I highly recommend it."
Scarlette looked at what Jennifer pointed at. The dress was beautiful. Truly beautiful. She liked it without a doubt.
"It's good. I like it."
"Ok, then. I'll tell Sinai about it. She'll come and take your measurement after. Try to decide what colour and design you want for your bridesmaid."
Scarlette just smiled tightly and whispered a small 'okay'. She didn't want to think about the marriage. Just thinking that she would be married by the end of this month made her feel a tight suffocation in her chest. She just thought she had come for shopping.
"Hello."
Scarlette looked at Sinai. She was the owner of the shop and Augustus' family's personal designer. She was the best designer here. She was originally from Virginia. But she also had a shop here and personally came here for the wedding. She took Scarlette's and Charlotte's measurement and talked a little about the bridesmaid dress and went back to her chamber. Today was only for dress shopping. Tomorrow they would go out again for the other necessities of wedding like cake tasting, colour theme,choosing centrepiece, flowers etc. Scarlette was already feeling drained and it was just the starting. Only Scarlette, Charlotte and Augustus' dress were chosen while others were still left.
Today's gonna be a long long day. Scarlette thought as she walked to the front of the boutique with Charlotte and Lucy where her mother was talking suprisingly, with Augustus.
