As morning came, my body felt stiff, as I tried to move. Sitting up I found that I had fallen asleep leaning against the cabin wall. Looking down I could see my wolf companion was still asleep with his head in my lap. I ran my hands through his fur and as I looked him over I realized just how big he really was. And that he was definitely a male wolf...
Moving his head off my lap, I tried to get up. To my dismay, pain flared up through my leg. Looking down at it I could see my ankle was swollen and red, it must have been sprained when the wolves attacked me.
Taking a deep breath I tried to ignore it and limped over to the cabinets looking for medical supplies. I managed to find some blankets and some bandages but nothing to clean open wounds. Walking to the counter I even tried using the sink but alas no water came from the old spout. Looking around I also spotted a mortar and pestle, if I could find some medicinal herbs then I could actually do something.
Looking back at the wolf I could see him starting to stir. Sighing I grabbed an old worn-out bag and headed for the door, as I opened it I could hear a slight growl coming from behind me. And I looked back to see he was now awake. He tried to sit up whining in pain.
"It's okay im not going anywhere...i won't run off...you need to rest... I just need to go find some water so I can clean your wounds." He growled in response and I could tell he didn't want me to leave. He stood up and started to walk towards the door.
"No! You need to lay down!" I kneeled in front of him as he reached me, and started to pet his head. "Please your too badly injured...i won't be gone long..."
His ears folded back as he sat down, and I gently helped him to lay back on his uninjured side. "I'll be right back...i promise..." His eyes met mine as I gave him my own silent promise. Standing up I opened the door, and in turn, he whined. I gave him a sorry smile and went outside closing it behind me.
Looking around the forest I felt a bit overwhelmed by the new area. Grabbing an old bucket near the door I started Limping over to the tree line and looked around for anything useful.
I managed to find some herbs that I could grind into a paste, and stuffed them into my bag. As I walked I also found a berry bush. Kneeling down I looked at them carefully. What were the chances that they were edible?
The rustle of bushes had me holding my breath and I stayed still. Did the wolves follow us this far out?
As the bush moved a small furry rabbit jumped out eating the same red berries I was debating on trying. Once it noticed me it hopped away and I let out a sigh of relief. I guess they were edible.
I was still on edge after last night and as I collected the berries, my mind started to run through everything that happend. The beast was able to transform into a wolf... Were all of those wolves able to do the same only into the more...monstrous form? No that didn't make sense...if they could change like him, they would have at the very start of that fight...he was capable of dealing a lot more damage in his other form...the only problem was he had been injured...and he was protecting me...
Why were they attacking him in the first place? They were attacking my village together...so why did they act like enemies? Was it because he was different? It just doesn't make sense... They even had matching collars...but they also acted kind of unnatural...like when he went berserk...was something making them act that way?...
Standing up I looked back towards the cabin, then continued looking for a water source. As I scavenged more herbs I came across a rocky area, and to my surprise, a small bit of water was running down the side of the stone ledge making a natural spring. I smiled and quickly made my way over. Rinsing off the dirt and dust from the bucket with the water, I made sure it was clean before filling it up.
Once I got enough I made my way back to the cabin. Opening the door I was met with the annoyed growl of my companion as he looked at me while laying on the floor. He wasn't happy about me leaving. "i told you id be back..."
Grabbing a few clean rags and bowls I filled them with water and started soaking the cloth, settling down next to the wolf beast. Looking over his wounds, they no longer seemed like claw marks, just mangled flesh, causing my stomach to stir uncomfortably.
"Hold still..." I tried looking closer at his wounds and gently touched the area. A strangled yelp came from him as he quickly tried to sit up, growling at me.
"Stop! You have to lay down I need to clean your wounds!"
He growled in my face with his ears back. Any other time before I would have scrambled back and tried to run away, but I knew he was just being stubborn, so I didn't back down and gave him a glare of my own before trying to gently...or least as gently as I could, while using my body weight, to pull him back down. But he wasn't having it and quickly pulled away before walking back to the other side of the room and plopping down on the floor with his head on his front paws.
Huffing I looked over to the fireplace, noticing some firewood, and a pot. I made my way over to the fireplace and stacked some wood log pieces inside. Grabbing the flint above, I started a fire and filled the pot hanging above it with water. When I glanced back at the giant grey wolf, he was still laying there sulking, and I could see the blood coating his fur...there was no way he wasn't in pain...
Using the herbs I collected from outside I started to grind them up into a paste.
Once I had a good amount I wiped the sweat from my brow and set it aside for later. Thinking back to when gramps had taught me how to treat minor injuries just as cuts or scrapes...i use to play outside a lot and often came home covered in scratches. He always made this stuff and put it over my wounds. After about a day or two they would always heal and it was as if I never had them in the first place... I just hoped this was enough.
Looking in my bag, I could see I had a good amount of berries collected but it would hardly be enough to feed us...that is if wolf beasts even eat berries... What was I going to do about food? We were nowhere near the creek anymore and he couldn't go hunting...i have little to no experience in that subject either...
Sighing I hugged my knees and stared at the fireplace while I waited for the water to heat up. Looking at my ankle I grimaced. The claw marks didn't look any better and now I had some small teeth marks and it was pretty swollen. If I didn't have my boots on im sure it would have been much worse when that wolf grabbed me.
I need to try and stay off my feet for a while or else it will get worse. Looking back at the pot I could see it was starting to create steam, so I removed it from the fire and poured some into a bowl.
Grabbing everything I had gathered before I made my way back over to my companion.
His eyes opened and looked up at me. I gave him a small smile and rubbed his ears which he seemed to enjoy the most.
"I need to clean your wounds...so just try to hold still...ok?" Moving to his side I dipped the clean rag into the warm water, once it was soaked I pressed it gently against the open wound on his shoulder. A strained snarl left his mouth as he suddenly tried to stand. Dropping the rag back in the water I grabbed onto him.
" need to lay down!" He growled at me in turn showing his fangs and I could feel my stomach drop from the look he gave me but I wasn't going to back down.
Using the little strength I had left I tried to pull him back down the ground, but he hardly moved an inch and continued to growl. "Stop being so stubborn!" He slipped free of my grasp making me fell to the floor. Spilling some of the water all over my front.
I groaned and sat up, looking at myself before glaring at him. His ears folded back as he sat down, still not budging. Sighing I poured some more warm water into the bowl. "Come here..."
He turned his head away refusing to move. I never thought a wolf-beast would be so stubborn. "If you don't let me clean your wounds, it will take longer to heal! What happens if you get an infection?..." Still, he didn't budge. How am I supposed to get him to listen to me? Then an idea came to mind.
"If you let me clean your wounds I'll give you a treat." His ears seemed to perk up at my words intrigued. Of course, I didn't have anything to offer him yet but I could try to bring him a rabbit or squirrel afterwards.
He looked me over before hesitantly laying back down. I smiled, happy about my little victory. Taking the rag again I dabbed the wound on his shoulder. In turn, the wolf tried to hold back his whines and growls. Once I finished cleaning up most of the blood, the water was no longer clear, it now looked like a fine red wine.
Grabbing the paste I created I carefully spread it across his wounds. He would flinch each time I touched a particularly sore spot. And I could help the ache in my chest that continued to grow at his discomfort." sorry... Almost done."
Using the bandages I found I managed to wrap and cover his wounds fairly well, nearly using everything I had in the process. Once I was finished I could tell he was exhausted.
Rubbing his head I comforted him until he fell asleep. "Get some rest..." His eyes closed as he drifted off. Looking at the remaining supplies, I decided to use the rest of the paste and bandages to wrap up my ankle.
Considering my clothes were now soaked. I took off my shirt and pants. Laying them out in front of the fireplace to dry. Setting the rest of the supplies on the mantle I grabbed the blanket off the bed and decided to sit in front of the fire with the wolf next to me.
Wrapping the blanket around me, I sat and enjoyed the heat. What am I doing?... Shouldn't I be running away? Now that the wolf-beast couldn't chase me?
Looking at the creature beside me I smiled at how peaceful things were. No... I can't run away... Not when im the reason he's hurt... Reaching over I stroked his head, enjoying how soft his fur was.
Looking down I could see the collar on its neck, and I moved closer to touch it. The other wolves had the same thing around their necks... Moving my hand over the brace I looked for any kind of latch or clasp to try and remove it but found nothing.
Furrowing my brows I stared at the strange pendant. It gave me a weird feeling... I didn't like it...how did it even get on the creature?...did someone put it on him? Turning my attention away from the Erie pendant I grabbed my bag of berries and leaned back against the wolf beast.
Usually, id think myself crazy just for being near the creature, but now I was using it as a pillow? Maybe I've lost my mind... And all of this is just some crazy fantasy. Snuggling up closer I started munching on the berries I collected.
Well...i guess my life is anything but normal now.
