Half an hour later, the lanky officer rushed across the green and gave me his customary fingers-to-the-brim salute. There had been some messages from the Major, but they were all military in nature. He had no idea when James would return.

“I keep hearing about some renegades, Lieutenant. You know anything about them?”

“Captain Hickum has a patrol out right now. They hit a farm south of town near the Little Islands yesterday. Shot up the place and stole some horses. Mr. Lang—that’s the man who owns the place—was in the field and saw them coming. He got everybody inside before they arrived. Have you had any trouble?”

“I’ve been at Teacher’s Mead for the last two days. I’d better get out to the farm to make sure everything is fine.”

“You let us know if anybody’s done any damage to the major’s place.”
