“They’ll know something’s up if no one is working this time of day,” Cuthan had insisted. “Give me fair warning when to take cover.”

James and I scaled the west hill and found a spot where we wouldn’t be easily seen when the raiders climbed the back of the hollow hill with their dynamite. A group of about ten riders halted a mile from the Mead for a consultation. After a few minutes, six of them rode directly for the house. They obviously planned to pin everyone inside while the other four men climbed the hollow hill with the dynamite. I spotted a familiar splayfooted chestnut with the group coming straight for the house. There was no blue roan gelding with a white stocking among them.
