Zhou Tong suddenly charged forward, wielding the Abyss Ancient Sword with such force that it stirred a powerful gust, as if it could split mountains and sever metal. The sight of Lu Chengfeng's injuries ignited a fire within him, and a deadly intent took hold. He wielded his heavy sword with a reckless ferocity, advancing on his opponent with overwhelming strength.
"Zhou Tong! This is a private matter between me and Lu Chengfeng. It has nothing to do with you—stand aside!" Elder Xiao's face twisted in displeasure. Never did he expect Lu Chengfeng, someone so much younger, would evade his grasp multiple times. Now Zhou Tong had arrived to disrupt his plans.
He thought bitterly, "Today may not go as I intended. Just a bit earlier was the perfect chance, yet that slippery wretch managed to escape." Now, Lu Chengfeng would be wary of future dangers, making it much harder to find an ideal opportunity to kill him.
Yet Zhou Tong only laughed derisively. "You old rat, cut the nonsense!" he roared, unleashing a flurry of attacks. His Abyss Ancient Sword moved with unparalleled violence, forcing Elder Xiao to retreat step by step, not daring to engage directly.
The power Zhou Tong displayed now was leagues beyond what he'd shown in his earlier sparring with Lu Chengfeng. There was a fierce aura about him, as if he could cleave mountains with a single strike.
Only a few breaths had passed, yet Elder Xiao was already drenched in sweat. His face flushed as he struggled to keep up, internal energy pushed to its limits.
"Lu Chengfeng has joined Jade Immortal Peak as my junior brother, making him my blood relative in all but name! You dare harm him? If I don't teach you a lesson today, people might start thinking Jade Immortal Peak's disciples are easy prey," Zhou Tong barked. Then, with a sudden shift in stance, he launched his 'Earth-Splitting Slash' with incredible speed, merging with his sword in a downward assault as if descending from the heavens.
Elder Xiao's face turned pale. Three feet of sword energy erupted from his blade like a dragon, desperately blocking the descending heavy sword.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Their weapons clashed with a fury that sent sparks flying in all directions.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Zhou Tong's overwhelming strikes forced Elder Xiao to retreat seven steps, his right hand numbed by the impact. His sword flew out of his grip, landing a dozen feet away.
"Die!" Zhou Tong showed no mercy, raising his sword to deliver a killing blow directly at Elder Xiao's head.
"Stop! Are you really trying to kill me?" Elder Xiao's face finally revealed genuine fear, his voice tinged with desperation.
Thud!
The Abyss Ancient Sword abruptly switched from a downward strike to a horizontal smash, its broad blade hitting Elder Xiao like a battering ram.
Splurt!
Elder Xiao coughed up blood as his body was flung several feet back, crashing to the ground and struggling to rise.
Zhou Tong, his sword still in hand, walked toward Elder Xiao, eyes cold and unforgiving. "Old rat, if it weren't for the fact we're in the sect, I'd have cleaved you in two. I'm warning you: if I hear of you laying a finger on my junior brother again, I'll personally come for your head."
"If anything happens to my junior brother, whether there's proof or not, I'll kill you first."
"You…!" Elder Xiao, already humiliated, felt his rage boil over at Zhou Tong's blunt threat, nearly fainting from sheer fury. Through gritted teeth, he spat, "So, the rumors were true. They say the sect has some extraordinary talents, and that you're one of the 'Three Heroes and Seven Geniuses' known across the land."
"Now I see why you're called the Mad Tiger among the Seven Geniuses. You live up to your name." He sneered bitterly. "I admit defeat. If you wish to kill me, go ahead."
With that, he shut his eyes, putting on a stoic front as if resigned to his fate.
"Typical of an old scoundrel," Zhou Tong scoffed. "You know full well I won't kill you here, and yet you put on this farce. Pathetic." He gave a derisive laugh. "If you're so eager to die, follow me off the mountain. I'll send you to the next life myself."
Even with his eyes closed, Elder Xiao's face turned purple with anger, his entire body trembling.
Zhou Tong stepped closer, voice low and menacing. "Remember every word I've said today. If you fail to heed my warning, don't blame me when my sword comes for you. Now get lost."
With that, Zhou Tong kicked him hard, sending Elder Xiao rolling a good distance away, eliciting a pained groan.
Zhou Tong ignored him, striding back toward Lu Chengfeng with a calm demeanor. "Junior Brother, are you alright? Are your injuries serious?"
Lu Chengfeng sheathed his sword and shook his head. "It's just some cuts and bruises. With a bit of medicine, I'll recover in no time."
"Good thing you arrived in time, Senior Brother, or I might not be here to tell the tale."
"That old rat," Zhou Tong muttered angrily. "If we weren't in the sect, I'd have cut him down where he stood. He's been alive for far too long if he thinks bullying a junior is acceptable."
Lu Chengfeng forced a smile. "Skill speaks louder than age, I suppose. But Senior Brother, weren't you training on the mountain? How did you get here so quickly? And do you know what's going on with the Inner Peaks? There's chaos everywhere."
Zhou Tong frowned. "I don't know the details, but Master sensed you were in danger before she left and instructed me to come to your aid."
Lu Chengfeng paused, surprised. He'd assumed Zhou Tong's timely arrival was just a fortunate coincidence or due to some other reason. He never expected that it was actually Zhu Yuxian who'd sent him to help.
In that moment, a flurry of thoughts flooded his mind, trying to decipher her true intentions. "Could it be that she and Elder Xiao aren't on the same side after all? Or is this some sort of elaborate act, with one playing the villain and the other the savior?"
Lu Chengfeng dismissed the idea that she genuinely cared for him. If he hadn't glimpsed her past dealings through Zhao Changzhen's memory fragments, he might have been moved. Under different circumstances, he might have seen this as a life-saving kindness, something to inspire loyalty.
But now, he felt only suspicion. "She's scheming something big. I need to be extremely cautious."
A powerful sense of crisis welled up within him. Being caught in the plots of inner elders made him feel like a pawn at their mercy, an ant to be crushed if they wished.
"I can't just wait around any longer. I must do whatever it takes to strengthen myself."
The reality of his vulnerability hit him harder than ever. Ambitions he'd kept in check now rose fiercely within him, emboldened by this brush with death.
"I should look into other masters or high-ranking members who may have widows. Even if it earns me a reputation as a womanizer, I need to gain strength quickly."
He clenched his fists, eyes filled with determination. "I refuse to be anyone's prey."
